Román Tereza filozof z roku 1748, za jehož autora je nejčastěji považován Boyer d'Argens, patří k nejznámějším a zároveň nejvíce pronásledovaným textům 18. století. Byl šířen ilegálně, přičemž důvodem nebyly jen jeho silně erotické pasáže, ale zejména "libertinství" v původním slova smyslu, to jest ideje, které šířil - problematičnost křesťanské morálky, náboženství jako lidský výtvor apod. Román má blízko k markýzovi de Sade, ale v zásadě v něm jde mnohem více o svobodu myšlení v duchu osvícenství. Vychází s dobovými ilustracemi a doslovem profesora Miroslava Petříčka. V roce 1731 otřásl Francií skandál, když vyšlo najevo, že jezuita Jean-Baptiste Girard zneužíval v Toulonu svou dvacetiletou kajícnici Marii-Cathérine Cadiereovou. Byl však po dlouhém procesu zproštěn viny a dívka byla svěřena do péče matky. Aféra byla široce komentována v tisku, vyšlo i několik pamfletů a satir převážně ze strany odpůrců jezuitů a veršem se jí dotkl i Voltaire. Roku 1748 vyšel bez uvedení jména autora román Tereza filozof, v němž bylo za průhlednými anagramy snadné rozpoznat aktéry tohoto skandálu (Girard-Dirrag, Cadiere-Eradice). Vydali jej tiskaři Joly a Boscheron. Kniha byla zřejmě vytištěna v Liege, archy tajně dopraveny do Paříže, kde byly doplněny rytinami a svázány.
