Apokalyptická vízia budúcnosti od autorky románu Frankenstein. Mary Shelleyová (1797 – 1851) si v máji 1824 napísala do denníka: „Posledný človek! Presne tak, pocity tejto osamelej ľudskej bytosti viem opísať veľmi dobre. Sama si totiž pripadám ako posledný pozostatok milovanej rasy, keďže sa moji spoločníci do jedného pominuli ešte predo mnou.“ Autorka slávneho Frankensteina sa po smrti manžela P. B. Shelleyho vrátila do Anglicka, rozhodla sa spravovať jeho literárnu pozostalosť, no popritom nezabúdala ani na vlastné spisovateľské aktivity, ktorými si nepochybne kompenzovala všetky osobné straty. Okrem manžela jej totiž umreli aj deti (spolu tri – Clara, Clara Everina a William), ostal jej len syn Percy Florence. Autorka v priebehu desiatich rokov z romantického ošiaľu, ktorý sa niesol aj v znamení (nielen) jej osobnej sexuálnej revolúcie, zdá sa, celkom vytriezvela. Už to nebola len neplnoletá intelektuálka, dcéra známych spisovateľov W. Godwina a M. Wollstonecraftovej, plachá kráska s knihou v ruke, ktorej počaruje ženatý básnik pochybnej povesti. Rozhodla sa bojovať s nepriazňou osudu a postarať sa o posledného člena novej rodiny, aký jej ešte zostal, úplne sama.Pocit opustenosti položila na papier v knihe Posledný človek (The Last Man, 1826), v ktorom vzdáva hold ľudskosti v jej neuveriteľnej krehkosti. O svojom diele sa vyjadrila slovami: „Musím povedať, že Posledného človeka mám spomedzi svojich literárnych počinov najradšej, no chyby rozhodne neprehliadam.“Román je príbehom priateľstva, je to filozofická úvaha o ľudskej náture, o zmysle života v spoločnosti, o duchovnom i intelektuálnom vyzrievaní v čase prevratných spoločenských zmien na pozadí katastrofy globálnych rozmerov. Dielo pôsobí v pandemickej ére priam prorocky. Po prvom vydaní v roku 1826 kniha zapadla prachom, vo svete ju vylovili z archívu až v roku 2008 a konečne si ju môžeme prečítať aj v prvom slovenskom preklade.

Kdo vlastně byl tvůrce monstra, které čtenáře a diváky děsí již přes 200 let? S odpovědí na tuto otázku přichází studio Needles, jehož debutová audiokniha Solaris posbírala hned dvě ceny ( cena Vinyla a Audiokniha roku 2014 ). Dramatizované zpracování nervydrásajícího příběhu Viktora Frankensteina vychází ve vydavatelství Needles Audiobooks v původní nezkrácené podobě. Nahrávka je obohacena o originální zvukové zpracování a hudební doprovod. Právě ten - spolu s podmanivými hlasy interpretů Roberta Mikluše, Petra Pochopa a Jana Zadražila - dodává audioknize mrazivě atmosférickou hloubku a zpřístupňuje ji tak současnému posluchači. Trojici hlasů uzavírá Jan Zadražil v roli ambiciózního kapitána Waltona, který je hnán podobnými tužbami jako nešťastný Frankenstein. Narozdíl od něj má však Walton stále možnost volby, a tím i naději na vlastní záchranu. Původní verze příběhu o Frankensteinovi byla napsána během deštivého léta r. 1816, které trávila Mary Godwinová se svým nastávajícím manželem Percy Bysshe Shelleym na dovolené na Ženevském jezeře, v jehož okolí se velká část románu odehrává. Z původní hříčky se však vyklubal kultovní román, základní stavební kámen hororového žánru, který přežil přes desítky generací.

The first – The Tomb of Sara – was written by English navy officer, and writer, Frederick George Loring. It was one of the very first stories from the last century featuring a lady vampire. The feminine element represents the connection with Luella Miller by Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. The inhabitant of a haunted house sucks life out of everyone who gets interested in her – and the atmosphere gets denser throughout the story. This relatively short story is incredibly touching, and you will remember it for a long time. The atmosphere builds up thanks to well-chosen voices, music, and graphics.

Ano, právě on je autorem proslaveného románu v dopisech s názvem Drákula. Zde přichází se Snem o rudých rukou, kde rozpracovává nesmrtelné téma zločinu a trestu a přidává ještě špetku navíc – vykoupení. Krátký, leč hutný Sen o rudých rukou (v dřívějším překladu také Sen o červených rukách) čte Petr Šmíd.

Her stories were long forgotten until being rediscovered in 1999 – over 100 years since the last of them was published in 1897. On the other hand, Bram Stoker (author of the famed novel, Dracula) is a legend in the horror world. This collection features Stoker’s short story, A Dream of Red Hands. The theme is crime and punishment, seasoned with a hint of redemption. Once again – excellent voices, stunning music, and great graphical design result in an exquisite mixture of emotions.
