Román Paní Bovaryová (1857), zasazený do provinčního maloměsta v Normandii a vyprávějící příběh krásné Emmy, provdané za venkovského lékaře, která se nespokojenost v manželství pokouší kompenzovat únikem do světa snů a milostných dobrodružství, jež ji nakonec přivedou do záhuby, je českým čtenářům velmi dobře známý – u nás vyšel již zhruba třicetkrát (poprvé roku 1892) a dočkal se bezmála deseti překladů. Naše zpracování je ovšem v kontextu českých vydání ojedinělým počinem, a to hned z několika důvodů. Předně proto, že kromě textu samotného románu umožňuje českému čtenáři seznámit se s jedním z nejznámějších soudních procesů vedených proti spisovateli v dějinách literatury, a sice s žalobou proti Flaubertovi za urážku „veřejné a náboženské morálky a mravnosti“, jíž se měl uveřejněním svého románu dopustit. Autor totiž podle slov císařského žalobce stvořil obscénní a bezbožné dílo, které nelze vnímat jinak než jako „chvalozpěv na ci­zoložství“. Flaubert se ovšem provinil nejen tím, že zavr­ženíhodné jednání protagonistky svého románu vylíčil „lascivními barvami“, nýbrž také – a možná především – tím, že počínání cizoložné ženy dostatečně jasně neodsoudil, nedistancoval se od něj a nepostavil proti němu žádný pozitivní příklad ctnosti. V románu totiž žádné skutečně kladné postavy, žádní hrdinové hodní obdivu a následování nejsou, všude vládne a vítězí měšťácká přízemnost, průměrnost a banálnost. Flaubertův „hřích“ pak spočíval primárně v tom, že se explicitně nepřihlásil k „posvátným“ hodnotám, které v podmínkách druhého císařství platily za nedotknutelné. Při četbě žalobcovy řeči, jakož i protiargumentů, jimiž se autorův obhájce pokusil nařčení z autorovy amorálnosti vyvrátit, se dnešní čtenář neubrání pocitu, že společnost se od doby procesu (1857) v některých ohledech vůbec nezměnila… Nařčení autora z amorálnosti či necitelnosti úzce souvisí s Flaubertovým chápáním literatury, k němuž se postupně dopracoval. Romanopisec vskutku své postavy nijak nehodnotí, nevnucuje čtenářům své názory. Jeho úkolem není vychovávat, natož pak soudit, nýbrž hledat a – daří-li se mu to – také nalézat nejvhodnější prostředky k tomu, aby vykreslil věrný obraz skutečnosti, aniž by se uchyloval k jakémukoli idealizování, moralizování či poučování. Řečeno slovy samotného Flauberta: „Umělec musí být ve svém díle jako Bůh ve svém stvoření: všudypřítomný, všemocný, ale neviditelný.“ O Flaubertově tvůrčí metodě, kterou při psaní Paní Bovaryové uplatnil a která znamenala významný předěl v dějinách (nejen) francouzské literatury, o jeho poetice neosobní pravdy a krásy, již vyznával, pojednává zevrubná analýza románu z pera jednoho z největších znalců Flaubertova díla Phillipa Dufoura, kterou se naše vydání uzavírá. Kniha je tak určena nejen čtenářům krásné literatury, ale i studentům a zájemcům z řad odborné veřejnosti.
