Přestože datace i účel Ptačího sněmu jsou do značné míry spekulativní, mnohými historiky bývá báseň kladena do přímé souvislosti s námluvami mladého anglického krále Richarda II. a Annou Českou, dcerou římského císaře Karla IV., jíž vzdal Chaucer hold hned v několika svých skladbách. Zároveň se jedná o jeden z nejranějších dokladů spojení kultu svatého Valentýna s milostnou tematikou.
