A mezitím projel zemi skrz naskrz s cílem sepsat prvního anglickojazyčného turistického průvodce po postkomunistickém Československu. To, co Mark Baker prožil, by bylo stěží možné v jakékoliv jiné době. Z prvního Čecha, kterého potkal, se vyklubal spolupracovník StB, jenž ho sledoval. Seznámil se s fascinujícím světem velkých komunistických hotelů prošpikovaných odposlouchávacími zařízeními, veksláky a podezřelými atraktivními ženami. Navštívil „zázraky“ socialistického hospodářství – JZD Slušovice, podniky zahraničního obchodu atd. Vedl rozhovor s Viktorem Koženým, prorokem, jemuž uvěřily tisíce Čechů. Se smutkem reportoval o rozpadu Československa, aby posléze na euforické vlně invaze tisíců mladých cizinců, které přivábila Praha coby „Paříž“ 90. let, vítal ve svém knihkupectví Ludvíka Vaculíka nebo Allena Ginsberga. Podivuhodná doba, kdy „bylo cokoliv možné“, zrodila jedinečné zážitky – ty zvlášť vyniknou v podání skvělého vypravěče, jímž Mark Baker bezesporu je.
