Malíř a grafik Ferdinand Staeger se narodil roku 1880 v Třebíči. Studoval na Uměleckoprůmyslové škole v Praze u Jakuba Schikanedera. Byl členem Spolku německých výtvarných umělců v Čechách. Živil se jako kreslíř pro časopisy Švanda dudák a Zlatá Praha.V širší známost vešel svojí spoluprací s mnichovským časopisem časopis Jugend, představujícím nejvýznamnější platformu tehdejších uměleckých snah, jehož jméno inspirovalo dodnes užívaný termín Jugendstil, obdobu u nás užívaného názvu secese. Od roku 1908 žil s přestávkami ve Vídni, v Třebíči a Mnichově. Přestože byl vynikající malíř, prosadil se zejména jako grafik. Ilustroval řadu literárních děl, mimo jiné od Adalberta Stiftera, Josepha von Eichendorffa, Hanse Fraungrubera, Eduarda Mörikeho nebo Gerharta Hauptmanna. Staegerovy práce vynikají delikátní, jemně traktovanou kresbou s až minuciózními prvky, upomínajícími spíše na atmosféru biedermeieru. Druhá polovina dvacátých let minulého století představuje pozvolný útlum grafické tvorby a výraznější návrat k malbě. Postupně se u něj projevovaly vlivy symbolismu a propracoval se k exaltovanému projevu kladoucímu důraz na dokonalost formy a malebnost mystických, tajemných, vizí. Během druhé světové války byla velká část jeho díla zničena. Zemřel v roce 1976 v německém Waldkraiburgu.

(1608-1657) se narodil v období, kdy vrcholil tzv. habsburský bratrský rozkol (mezi Rudolfem II. a Matyášem), a dospěl za třicetileté války, během níž se stal jako "generalissimus" nástupcem Albrechta z Valdštejna ve velení císařské armády. Jeho vítězství u Nördlingenu v roce 1634 vedlo o rok později k pražskému míru, ke smíření se Saskem a německými luterány. Jako císař (od roku 1637) pak Ferdinand marně usiloval o separátní mír se Švédy, kteří se nakonec dostali až před vídeňské brány, bojoval proti Francii kardinálů Richelieua a Mazarina, na prvním místě mu však šlo o jednotu "rakouského domu", totiž o spojení se Španělskem, pojící se s vyhlídkami na dědictví jeho světové říše, rozkládající se jak v Evropě, tak v zámoří. Nicméně při uzavření vestfálského míru (1648) byl okolnostmi donucen souhlasit s dočasným oddělením se od španělských příbuzných - a právě v tomto směru se stal mírovým císařem proti své vůli. Kulturně znamenala epocha jeho života vrchol italského vlivu, počínaje příbuzenstvím s Gonzagy a Medicejskými, přes protireformační Řím až k vysokým důstojníkům typu Piccolominiho či Montecuccoliho. V roce 1951 se Ferdinand Peroutka v New Yorku stal jedním ze zakladatelů rozhlasové stanice Svobodná Evropa a jejím prvním ředitelem. Na rozhlasových vlnách hovořil k lidem doma každý týden řadu let. Jeho politické komentáře představují mimořádně zajímavou část poválečné publicistiky a jsou propojeny průvodním slovem a vysvětlivkami Jana Bednáře, vedoucího redaktora zahraničně politické rubriky Českého rozhlasu a držitele Ceny Ferdinanda Peroutky za rok 2012. Peroutkova zamyšlení nikterak nezastarávají. Naopak jsou nezbytným pramenem poznání české historie i událostí dneška. Unikátní komentáře nalezené v kalifornském archivu Svobodné Evropy zazněly poprvé v pořadu Názory a argumenty na ČRo 6.

Román z roku 1932 je prvotinou francouzského spisovatele Louise Ferdinanda Célina. Okamžitě byl překládán ve světě. Český překlad Jaroslava Zaorálka (spolu s ním Richarda Weinera a Jindřicha Hořejšího) z roku 1933 byl vůbec první vydaný převod románu do cizího jazyka a stal se inspirací a literární senzací české literatury. Když Jaroslav Zaorálek v roce 1933 Célinův román překládal, byl jím uhranut jako knihou neznámého spisovatele, která ho nadchla, a takto k překladu přistupoval: inspirován předlohou ji rozvíjel a umocňoval její bezprostřední expresivnost. A s tím vším, díky té inspiraci a své obraznosti, vytvořil (včetně názvu Cesta do hlubin noci) jedinečnou českou knihu, která je a zůstane historickou kometou naší literární paměti. Nový český překlad vznikal s odstupem 86 let od prvního vydání knihy a se znalostí toho, jak se Célinovo dílo dále vyvíjelo a co je pro ně příznačné. S tímto vědomím souvislostí převádí Anna Kareninová do češtiny tuto nejlidštější ze Célinových knih jako první úchvatný román, který v sobě už ale ty další zahrnuje. V tomto smyslu najdeme v novém překladu Cesty postupy pro příští Célinovo dílo typické a jedinečné. Jedním z nich je kázeň. A ta dovedla překladatelku i k jinému českému názvu: Cesta na konec noci.
