Z rozsáhlého díla velikána světové literatury Johanna Wolfganga Goetha (1749-1832) ční dramatický text, na němž básník s přestávkami pracoval po celý život - Faust. Méně známá je ovšem komorní a zárodečná podoba tohoto dramatu, jež je označována někdy jako původní Faust nebo také Urfaust. Příběh o Faustovi a Markétce nenapsal Goethe jako slavný a oceňovaný génius, ale jako mladík, a vložil do něj svůj silný soucit, touhu po vzdoru a prožitku a víru ve spravedlnost.
