Během této praxe byl nucen v mnohém přehodnotit běžně panující i své vlastní názory na bruselskou byrokracii , na nejrůznější klišé a předsudky o nedemokratickém a byrokratickém labyrintu v institucích EU. A zajímal se, jak tyto úřady - Rada, Komise a Parlament - skutečně pracují. Nehájí bruselský superstát : je kritikem z pozic zastánce regionální samosprávy. Region definovaný krajem, historií, dialektem a zděděnými zvyky je podle Menasseho skutečným domovem občana. Obyvatel určitého regionu může cítit větší blízkost k sousedovi hned za (státními) hranicemi než k příslušníku téhož státu (národa) stovky kilometrů daleko. Kniha je pronikavým kritickým pohledem na Evropskou unii a úvahou o její budoucnosti.

Odkaz ikonického ateliéru a jeho znovuzrození Téměř od založení Ateliéru Langhans v roce 1876 až po jeho likvidaci po roce 1948 byly z obrovského firemního archivu negativů pečlivě vyčleňovány portréty významných osobností. Pro tento výběr se později vžil název Galerie osobností. Tato sbírka byla chloubou ateliéru a zároveň rozsáhlým svědectvím o elitě národa. Jsou v ní obsaženy portréty politiků, vědců, spisovatelů, výtvarníků i hudebníků, podnikatelů, legionářů a duchovních, herců a pěvců, šlechticů a také cizinců, kteří v Čechách pobývali. Po roce 1948 byl zničen nejen podnik samý, ale také většina jeho rozsáhlého vizuálního archivu. Téměř dva miliony převážně skleněných negativů byly vyvezeny na skládku v Praze-Kyjích. Přes devět tisíc portrétů z Galerie osobností se však shodou šťastných náhod docho-valo a díky péči restaurátorů se je podařilo zachránit. Objevení části archivu při přestavbě domu ve Vodičkově ulici v Praze v letech 1998 a 2000 přináší cenné svědectví o významu Langhansova odkazu pro českou i evropskou kulturu. Vždy jsem cítila sílu tohoto domu, který je tak úzce spojen s fotografií. Proto to možná nebyla náhoda, že se skleněné negativy slavných osobností našly právě při jeho rekonstrukci. Pracovní dny již nekončily s nastávajícím šerem. Svazek I Kapitola Ateliér: Ve svých pětadvaceti letech založil Jan Langhans (1851-1928) svůj první fotografický ateliér v Jindřichově Hradci (1876). Do Prahy se přestěhoval o čtyři roky později a v ateliéru ve Vodičkově ulici zůstal podnik až do znárodnění po roce 1948. Kapitola sleduje vývoj ateliéru (Lukáš Bártl, Ateliér Langhans a důležitost paměti), jeho podoby, reklamu i použití fotografií v tisku (Filip Wittlich, Fotografie mezi řádky. Ateliér J. F. Langhans a český tisk.), ateliér v konkurenci mladších fotografů na pozadí třech generací (Petra Trnková, Podnik, bez něhož by Praha nebyla Prahou). Historie po roce 1945 popisuje zánik firmy (Lukáš Bártl, Ateliér Langhans pod nucenou státní správou a jeho znárodnění po roce 1948). Kapitola Architektura: První dojem potomků původních majitelů při vstupu do domu ve Vodičkově ulici po restituci objektu v roce 1991 představoval jedním slovem zmar. Po několika letech tápání, hledání a posléze intenzivních příprav byla roce 2002 rekonstrukce, nástavba a dostavba domu zakončena (Rostislav Švácha Architektura Langhansova domu). Architekt Ladislav Lábus v eseji Rozpuštěný a vypuštěný popisuje mimo jiné roli náhody při nálezu skleněných negativů sbírky Galerie osobností. Část kapitoly doplňuje stavebně historický popis rozvoje fotografického ateliéru s dobovými plány (Ladislav Valtr). Kapitola Archiv a nadace: Zřizovatelkou Nadace Langhans Praha byla Věra Meisnerová, vdova po posledním majiteli Ateliéru Langhans. Bylo třeba nejdříve překonat úzkosti a obavy nemocné ženy, o šest let starší než Browning, že svým spojením s milovaným mužem přinese do jeho života jen zármutek a starosti, a také vyrovnat se s nepřekonatelným odporem jejího podivínského otce, který tvrdě požadoval, aby žádné z jeho jedenácti dospělých dětí neuzavíralo sňatek. Nakonec se musela dát Elizabeth Baarrettová s Browningem tajně oddat a odjela s ním do Itálie. Usadili se nejdříve v Pise a později ve Florencii, kde se jim narodil syn Robert Wiedermann, později známý malíř. V Itálii strávili patnáct let svého manželství, až do smrti E. B. Browningové, která zemřela ve Florencii v roce 1861. Robert Browning měl v době, kdy napsal první dopis E. Barrettové, za sebou vydání dramatické básně Paracelsus, básnický epos Sordello a první malé svazečky pásma lyrické a epické poezie, které nazval Zvonky a granátová jablka. Byla v nich jedna z jeho nejlepších básní Pippa jde mimo. Za svého pobytu v Itálii vytvořil řadu dramatických monologů, které vydal v obsáhlé sbírce Muži a ženy. Po smrti E. B. Browningové se usadil znovu v Londýně, aby poskytl synovi anglickou výchovu. Ještě za pobytu v Itálii ho zaujala drobná knížka líčící kdysi proslavený hrdelní proces a osudy jeho protagonistů. Browning zachytil průběh této hrdelní pře ve směle koncipované básni o 20 000 veršů, kterou nazval Prsten a kniha. Současníci, kritici, i čtenáři vytýkali dlouho jeho poezii přílišnou složitost, nesrozumitelnost, přetíženost historickými narážkami a metaforami. Nakonec jej však přece uznání neminulo. Po souborném vydání proslulost jeho díla časem vzrůstala (dožil se 82 let) a vyvrcholila založením Browningovské společnosti, jejímiž členy se stala řada jeho vynikajících současníků. Z díla E. B. Browninové přetrvává dosud rozsáhlý epos Aurora Leigh. Dějovou osnovou je velmi poplatný své době, ale jeho jádro tvoří již moderní svár mezi přáním ženy stát se pomocí své práce samostatnou ucelenou osobností a její touhou najít životní naplnění v lásce k milovanému muži. Nejvíce čteno a vydáváno je však oněch 44 dokonalých milostných sonetů - jak je nazval R. M. Rilke -, které vznikaly téměř souběžně s její korespondencí s Robertem Browningem a pod názvem Portugalské sonety jsou známy milovníkům poezie na celém světě. Korespondence Roberta Browninga a E. B. Barrettové vyšla v obsáhlém výboru v nakladatelství Odeon pod názvem Milý pane Browningu. Tyto dopisy, které si vyměnili v období let 1845 a 1846, tvoří zákonitou část literárního odkazu obou básníků. S niternou naléhavostí a vůlí k pravdě je v nich zachyceno v co věřili, doufali a co jeden v druhém nalezli. Hana Žantovská Každé zveřejnění soukromé korespondence je záležitostí nejen literární, nýbrž především etickou. Jestliže jsme se rozhodli zařadit korespondenci Elisabeth Barrettové s Robertem Browningem do repertoáru Violy (premiéru měla pod názvem Mé nebe za tvou zem 14. prosince 1973 a těší se dosud zájmu publika), bylo to také proto, že oba básníci se nevyhýbali tématu vzájemného vztahu ani ve svých verších. V nich jej zjevili - především básnířka - už svým současníkům, i když třeba pod průhlednou kamufláží: Elisabet Barrett Browningová nazvala své básně Portugalské sonety a vydávala je za překlad. Autorčiny verše zpětně vyvolaly zájem také o korespondenci. A tu se ukázalo, že milostné sonety slečny Barrettové - jedny z nejkrásnějších milostných sonetů světové poezie - jsou básnickou parafrází jejích dopisů. Z této skutečnosti vychází i náš scénář (jeho původní, dvojnásobná verze připravená pro Violu vznikla ve spolupráci s překladatelkou Hanou Žantovskou, která pro tento účel vybrala a přeložila básně Roberta Browninga). Dopis je proto doplňován, komentován, zobecněn, povýšen ze soukromého sdělení k objektivní hodnotě literární právě vřaz
