Lady Susan and Other Works - Jane Austenová

With an Introduction, explanatory notes, and annotated bibliography by Nicholas Seager. This collection brings together Jane Austen’s earliest experiments in the art of fiction and novels that she left incomplete at the time of her premature death in 1817. Her fragmentary juvenilia show Austen developing her own sense of narrative form whilst parodying popular kinds of fiction of her day. Lady Susan is a wickedly funny epistolary novel about a captivating but unscrupulous widow seeking to snare husbands for her daughter and herself. The Watsons explores themes of family relationships, the marriage market, and attitudes to rank, which became the hallmarks of her major novels. In Sanditon, Austen exercises her acute powers of social observation in the setting of a newly fashionable seaside resort. These novels are here joined by shorter fictions that survive in Austen’s manuscripts, including critically acclaimed works like Catharine, Love and Freindship [sic], and The History of England.

History of England by a Partial, Prejudiced and Ignorant Historian - Jane Austenová

During his reign, Lord Cobham was burnt alive, but I forget what for. In Jane Austen’s breezy and entirely biased telling of English history, Mary, Queen of Scots is a scandalously wronged victim, Elizabeth I is a wicked villain and most historical facts and dates are cheerfully disregarded. It is accompanied here by other riotous early pieces in which young women steal money, escape from prison, agree to marry two men at once, faint and repeatedly ‘run mad’.

Audiokniha: Od svého prvního vydání roku 1815 je Emma Jane Austenové hrdinkou mnoha dívek a žen, které nechtějí být křehké květinky zmítané okolnostmi. Chtějí si rozhodovat o svém osudu samy, byť za cenu omylů, chyb a zklamání. Příběh o dívce s dobrým srdcem je nadčasovým příběhem o emancipaci a hledání pravých životních hodnot. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austenová

Enjoy Jane Austen’s mastery of irony, dialogue, and realism in the unforgettable love story Pride and Prejudice, then share this classic piece of literature with a new generation. When headstrong and independent Elizabeth Bennet is required to find a wealthy husband, her encounter with the arrogant Mr. Darcy leads to one of the most entertaining and satisfying courtships ever imagined. Beyond the romance, Pride and Prejudice is a book full of humor and wit that is also a commentary on upper-class social manners at the turn of the nineteenth century.Even though it is concerned with love and marriage, the novel is a rejection of Romanticism, a popular way of imagining the world at that time. Austen preferred to highlight the rational abilities of her characters and not portray them as completely controlled by their emotions. Pride and Prejudice’s characters aren’t robots, though. Austen shows universal situations in a perfectly clear light—embarrassment when someone is foolish, the nervous feeling of falling in love, and the chagrin caused by making a big mistake.Austen’s mastery of irony, dialogue, and realism support character development and make Pride and Prejudice a pure pleasure to read. Complete and unabridged, this elegantly designed, jacketed hardcover edition features an introduction by Victorian literature scholar Deborah Lutz and a timeline of the life and times of Jane Austen.Essential volumes for the shelves of every classic literature lover, the Chartwell Classics series includes beautifully presented works and collections from some of the most important authors in literary history. Lady Susan, The Watsons, and Sanditon - Jane Austenová

'I am tired of submitting my will to the caprices of others-of resigning my own judgement in deference to those to whom I owe no duty, and for whom I feel no respect.'The unfinished fictions collected here are the novels and other writing that Jane Austen did not publish. The protagonist of the earliest story is Lady Susan, a sexual predator and a brilliant and manipulative sociopath. The Watsons, a tale of riches to rags, is set in a village deep in mud and misery where the Watson sisters waste away, day after dull day, waiting for the suitors who never appear.Sanditon, the novel interrupted by the author's death, is a topical satire onthe niche marketing campaign waged by investors in the latest seaside resort, the fictional Sanditon, situated on England's over-supplied south coast. If The Watsons shares the disturbed life of a Chekhov short story, Sanditon's cast of eccentrics anticipates the zany world of Dickens. Experimental and sharp-elbowed,all three probe new areas of invention and push out beyond what we expect to find in a novel by Jane Austen. This edition collects together all Austen's unpublished adult fiction, poetry, and related writings, written in her late teens, in her late twenties, and in the year she died, aged forty-one. They contribute more than a dash of discomfort to our modern image of the romantic novelist and reveal Jane Austen's development as a writer.

Drunken heroines, babies who bite off their mother's fingers, and a letter-writer who has murdered her whole family all feature in these very funny pieces. This edition includes all of Austen's juvenilia, including her 'History of England' - written by 'a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant Historian' - and the novella 'Lady Susan', in which the anti-heroine schemes and cheats her way through high society. Marianne Dashwood can't understand her sister. How could the attractive, witty, and charming Elinor fall for the quiet, self-effacing, and rather dull Edward Ferrars? And, if the two are in love, why don't they shout it to the world? Meanwhile, Elinor worries that Marianne's heart-first approach to life will hurt her, especially when it comes to the dashing John Willoughby. The two sisters spar good-naturedly over the merits of full-blown emotionalism versus reticence and self-discipline in matters of the heart. Fond as they are of each other, each is certain that hers is the only true path to love.Meanwhile, both Edward and Willoughby harbor secrets that will force these women to doubt their philosophies, their judgment, and their chances for happiness. Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility was first published in 1811. The novel explores themes of passion, propriety, and social conventions through the experiences of the Dashwood sisters.Austen's first published novel, it established her as a respected author and has become a literary classic for its wit, insight, and social commentary. Though initially overlooked by critics, the novel provokes thought on gender roles, marriage, and finding balance between reason and emotion. Two centuries later, Sense and Sensibility continues to resonate through its timeless examination of social mores and the conflict between duty and desire. Its relevance today lies in what it reveals about human nature, the complexity of relationships, and the tensions between individual fulfillment and social obligations.

Love and Freindship - Jane Austenová

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.Jane Austen is remembered for her six masterpieces of the Regency era: from the heroines of Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse, to the villains of Mrs. Norris and John Willoughby. But these characters were not born overnight. They sprung from Austen’s experiences as a young girl, and many early iterations can be found in the earliest of her writing: her Juvenilia.Austen was only a teenager when she wrote her Juvenilia. In the ''History of England'', Austen champions (and laments) the great kings of England as ''a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant Historian''; in ‘Lady Susan’, she writes a titular anti-heroine that schemes and cheats her way through high society; and in ‘Love and Freindship’, Austen paints a picture of a woman looking back on her extremely unfortunate life.Writing on the cusp of literary greatness, Love and Freindship offers a fascinating – and often surprising – insight into a young Jane Austen.

Jane Austenová /H+ H/ - Elsemarie Maletzke

Životopis slavné anglické spisovatelky Jane Austenové (1775-1817) vychází v době zvýšeného zájmu o její dílo i díky filmovým přepisům románů Rozum a cit a Pýcha a předsudek. Text knihy doplňuje chronologický životopisný přehled, soupis literatury a rejstřík. Elsemarie Maletzke je erudovaná životopiskyně anglických spisovatelek 19. století. Kromě Austenové napsala biografické portréty sester Brntëových (Das Leben des Brontës) a Georgie Eliot.

''Pray, pray be composed,'' cried Elinor, ''and do not betray what you feel to every body present. Perhaps he has not observed you yet.''For Elinor Dashwood, sensible and sensitive, and her romantic, impetuous younger sister Marianne, the prospect of marrying the men they love appears remote. In a world ruled by money and self-interest, the Dashwood sisters have neither fortune nor connections. Concerned for others and for social proprieties, Elinor is ill-equipped to compete with self-centred fortune-hunters like Lucy Steele, whilst Marianne''s unswerving belief in the truth of her own feelings makes her more dangerously susceptible to the designs of unscrupulous men. Through her heroines'' parallel experiences of love, loss, and hope, Jane Austen offers a powerful analysis of the ways in which women''s lives were shaped by the claustrophobic society in which they had to survive.
