Publikace vznikla přepracováním anglického originálu Narrative Modes in Czech Literature, vadaného takřka o dvacet let dříve. Oproti původní verzi je zde rozpracována první teoretická kapitola s ohledem na teorii fikčních světů, která je středem autorova zájmu po dobu posledních dvou desetiletí. Kniha je dokladem kontinuity strukturalistického přístupu k literárním textům a lze ji považovat za důslednou aplikaci funkčního přístupu v literatuře.
