Go Tell it on the Mountain - James Baldwin

James Baldwin''s electrifying first novel.''I had to deal with what hurt me most. I had to deal with my father.''Drawing on James Baldwin''s own boyhood in a religious community in 1930s Harlem, his first novel tells the story of young Johnny Grimes. Johnny is destined to become a preacher like his father, Gabriel, at the Temple of the Fire Baptized, where the church swells with song and it is as if ''the Holy Ghost were riding on the air''. But he feels only scalding hatred for Gabriel, whose fear and fanaticism lead him to abuse his family. Johnny vows that, for him, things will be different. This blazing tale is full of passion and guilt, of secret sinners and prayers singing on the wind. ''His prose hit me, almost winding me with its intensity. A History of Military Encounters with UFOs - Robert Allred

Explores the long history of military encounters with UFOs, revealing hidden incidents of dogfights, nuclear interference, and mysterious confrontations with unidentified aerial phenomena.Military bodies around our planet have encountered, and even clashed with, UFOs, or as the U.S. military now defines them, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena – UAP. These observations and engagements have occurred for well over a century, at least, and on all continents.Different nations and cultures have had vastly different interpretations of the UFO/UAP phenomenon – from the Soviet Union and Communist China to the Western democracies. The UFO/UAP phenomenon has not diminished and has instead grown in proportion in recent years. It has now assumed the mantle of legitimacy in many countries: in government circles, the media, among the general public, even in the world’s militaries. What are less well-known, or even concealed, are the encounters our planet’s militaries have had with UFOs – some of which have proved fatal to both sides. There were reported clashes between UFOs and both Allied and German aircraft in the First World War. In the Second World War, sightings of what became known as ‘Foo Fighters’ were commonplace. After that war, UFO-related incidents increased exponentially, culminating in the wave of observations in 1947. In July of that year, the United States Air Force announced the capture of a ‘flying disk’, outside Roswell, New Mexico. The USAF quickly withdrew the announcement, but it was verified for decades by scores of reliable witnesses –military and civilian. The crash was possibly caused, albeit unintentionally, by the U.S. military. Five years later, in July 1952, for two consecutive weekends, UFOs hovered over Washington, D.C. USAF jets trying to intercept the strange craft were outrun by the UFOs.UFOs/UAP have tampered with world nuclear forces, including shutting down strategic missiles of the United States, and activating Soviet ICBMs, almost setting off an unordered (by Soviet authorities) launch of atomic warheads against the United States. USAF and RAF personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, also encountered a UFO on the ground, and observed others above their joint air base at Rendlesham Forest in the UK in 1980. UFOs have played ‘cat-and-mouse’ games with the latest fighter-bombers of the United States Navy since 2004, and these events have been captured on videotape as verified by the pilots, and the navy. This book takes a no-nonsense approach in its careful research, with hundreds of sources cited, including formerly classified documents and testimony regarding UFOs/UAP. As readers will discover from the mass of evidence presented in this book, it is no longer a question of whether UFOs exist or not. Such phenomena are an incontrovertible fact that has prompted the United States to craft plans on how to resist an alien invasion. Is there any need for humans to be concerned about the alien presence in the skies surrounding our planet? Yes, be very concerned.

Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone - James Baldwin

In this tender, impassioned fourth novel, James Baldwin created one of his most striking characters: a man struggling to become himself.''Everyone wishes to be loved, but in the event, nearly no one can bear it''At the height of his theatrical career, the actor Leo Proudhammer is nearly felled by a heart attack. As he hovers between life and death, we see the choices that have made him enviably famous and terrifyingly vulnerable. For between Leo''s childhood on the streets of Harlem and his arrival into the world of the theatre lies a wilderness of desire and loss, shame and rage. And everywhere there is the anguish of being black in a society that seems poised on the brink of racial war. In this tender, angry 1968 novel, James Baldwin created one of his most striking characters: a man struggling to become himself.''The emotion surrounding family attachment... is deeply felt and is one reasons he continues to be read with such intensity'' Colm Tóibín

James Baldwin - Magdalena J. Zaborowska

An intimate portrait of James Baldwin, offering a new understanding of his life and works as seen through his close relationships and private life“Baldwin authority Zaborowska’s gracefully impassioned biography. . . . A creatively conceived appreciation for a decorated life and its far-flung influences on race, queer culture, and art.”—Kirkus Reviews  James Baldwin (1924–1987) was a pivotal figure of the twentieth century, an influential author, intellectual, and activist who led a celebrated public life—and whose words and image and persona remain current in our culture. Baldwin’s many incarnations—“son of Harlem,” “Black icon,” “great twentieth-century writer,” “race man,” “prophet,” “witness”—have reemerged in the digital age as Baldwin’s work becomes a touchstone for a new generation. It is the private, vulnerable, and messier Baldwin—the man behind the prophet and the online meme—who is the focus of this book.  Magdalena J. Zaborowska draws on Baldwin’s archives and material legacy—from his unpublished papers to his books to his house in France—to offer a fresh look at the writer’s understated and obscured private life. Taking a cue from Baldwin’s own love of the blues, Zaborowska presents his biography as a series of tracks on a vinyl record, introducing, developing, and remixing the themes and relationships from his life. She recounts episodes from Baldwin’s troubled childhood, his struggles with sexuality and gender, his intimate relationships, and the overlooked influence of women, Jews, and queers on his writing. This Life Album revolves around Baldwin’s development of a unique worldview, “Black queer humanism,” premised on African diaspora aesthetics, resilience, joy, community, internationalism, activism, and justice.

On James Baldwin - Colm Tóibín

Colm Tóibín’s personal account of encountering James Baldwin’s work, published in Baldwin’s centenary year.  Acclaimed Irish novelist Colm Tóibín first read James Baldwin just after turning eighteen. He had completed his first year at an Irish university and was struggling to free himself from a religious upbringing. He had even considered entering a seminary and was searching for literature that would offer illumination and insight. Inspired by the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, Tóibín found a writer who would be a lifelong companion and exemplar.  From On James BaldwinBaldwin was interested in the hidden and dramatic areas in his own being, and was prepared as a writer to explore difficult truths about his own private life. In his fiction, he had to battle for the right of his protagonists to choose or influence their destinies. He knew about guilt and rage and bitter privacies in a way that few of his White novelist contemporaries did. And this was not simply because he was Black and homosexual; the difference arose from the very nature of his talent, from the texture of his sensibility. “All art,” he wrote, “is a kind of confession, more or less oblique. All artists, if they are to survive, are forced, at last, to tell the whole story, to vomit the anguish up.”On James Baldwin is a magnificent contemporary author’s tribute to one of his most consequential literary progenitors.

And yet everyone’s life is always shaped by races, churches, and armies’ In these eight extraordinary stories of love, conflict, desperation and fear, James Baldwin shows people trapped by the roles they must play in society, and those who try and escape them. From the child in ‘The Rockpile’ whose God-fearing father will not forgive his illegitimacy, to the adolescent who hides his sexuality from his community in ‘The Outing’, and from the down-and-out jazz pianist recovering from addiction in ‘Sonny’s Blues’ to the chilling initiation of a racist in ‘Going to Meet the Man’, these tales, first published in 1965, explore the subtle and profound wounds that discrimination leaves – both in its victims and its perpetrators.

Dealings with Dictators - Mathias Dopfner

Global business leader Mathias Döpfner offers a “compelling” (Gideon Rachman, chief foreign affairs columnist for Financial Times) and revolutionary road map to reshape global trade, strengthen our democracy, and safeguard our freedoms.Freedom is on the decline around the world. Autocrats in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are undermining our open societies, human rights, and the rule of law. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a wake-up call for the West, but the biggest threat remains China. For two generations, Americans and Europeans have believed that change will come through trade, but instead of dictatorships becoming more like Western democracies, unfettered free trade has strengthened our enemies and undermined our countries. We are caught in a trade trap, faced with the decision to choose either opportunism and submission or opposition and emancipation. In Dealing with Dictators, one of the world’s most powerful business leaders traces the rise and costs of Western dependency on China and Russia. And he suggests a radical new approach to free trade: The establishment of a new values-based alliance of democracies. Membership is based on the adherence to three very simple criteria: the rule of law, human rights, and sustainability targets. Countries that comply with these criteria can engage in tariff-free trade with others. Those who don’t will pay prohibitive tariffs. Sharing the author’s encounters with major global figures including Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, George W. Bush, Angela Merkel, Jack Ma, and more, Dealing with Dictators offers personal insight into the dangerous consequences of doing business with autocrats along with a bold proposal for a values-based trade policy.

Conversations with Rilke - Maurice Betz

'I owe Betz infinite gratitude...a first-rate poet, a creative spirit, and a friend to all creative spirits...an ornament to literary France...an artist with words, lovable and worthy of love' - Thomas Mann'Maurice Betz is one of those artists whose importance only fully appears after they have disappeared' - Marcel AyméWalking in the Luxembourg Garden, describing encounters with enigmatic diva Eleonora Duse or an irascible Tolstoy: Rainer Maria Rilke's French translator Maurice Betz enjoyed a rare intimacy with the great poet. This account of their collaborative translation of Rilke's only novel brings the reader along on a tour of the glittering cultural scene of interwar Paris. An elegant, poignant look at the great writer's final years, Betz's memoir, sensitively translated by Will Stone, is a portrait of genius, an evocation of a lost world, and a testament to enduring friendship.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Translated by Will Stone.Maurice Betz (1898-1946), as well as writing poetry and novels, was a prolific translator of Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig and Thomas Mann. Life With Lacan - Catherine Millot

‘There was a time when I felt that I had grasped Lacan’s essential being from within – that I had gained, as it were, an apperception of his relation to the world, a mysterious access to that intimate place from which sprang his relation to people and things, and even to himself. It was as if I had slipped within him.’ In this short book, Catherine Millot offers a richly evocative reflection on her life as analysand and lover of the greatest psychoanalyst since Freud. Dwelling on their time together in Paris and in Lacan’s country house in Guitrancourt, as well as describing their many travels, Millot provides unparalleled insights into Lacan’s character as well as his encounters with other major European thinkers of the time. She also sheds new light on key themes, including Lacan’s obsession with the Borromean knot and gradual descent into silence, all enlivened by her unique perspective. This beautifully written memoir, awarded the André Gide Prize for Literature, will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the life and character of a thinker who continues to exert a wide influence in psychoanalysis and across the humanities and social sciences.

Reckoning with Race - Frederick Allen

Reckoning with Race is a firsthand account of race relations in America from award-winning journalist, author, and former CNN commentator, Rick Allen. Allen''s collection of essays shows the progress our country has made -- and how much further we have to go. In his fifty-year career as an award-winning journalist, CNN commentator, and author of multiple books, Rick Allen has had a front-row seat on dramatic change in race relations in America. In Reckoning with Race, a collection of eighteen essays, he explores his ongoing efforts to understand the struggle of black and white Americans to navigate a shared history at once wicked and intimate, full of love and hate, as they seek to level an uneven playing field. Allen examines issues from the era of Reconstruction through Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, the rhythms of resistance and progress, into today''s contentious debates over redlining, reparations, and critical race theory. Starting as a reporter with the Atlanta Constitution in 1972, Allen got to know and befriend legendary black political figures including Julian Bond, John Lewis, Andy Young, Hosea Williams, Maynard Jackson, Jesse Jackson, and Daddy King, the father of Martin Luther King, Jr. He also encountered ardent white segregationists, some of whom saw the light and others who took their racism to the grave. Drawing on his experience covering politics, he examines presidents from LBJ and Jimmy Carter to Obama and Trump. He explores the symbolism of Confederate flags, the controversy over Uncle Remus, the election of Atlanta''s first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, and the tragic case of the Atlanta Child Murders. He has had first-hand encounters with white supremacy and violent black protest alike. Throughout Reckoning with Race, Allen is candid about his own shortcomings as a white native Northerner learning gradually about the complexities of race in his adoptive South. The essays highlight his continuing journey toward understanding the forces that both hinder and promote equality and harmony between the races.

Dialogue With China: Opportunities And Risks

This book is the first volume of a projected series of six handbooks on various aspects involved in contemporary encounters with China and her people. The book argues for a hands-on approach of dialogue with China, which seems to be crucial for business success in China. Bearing in mind the various present clashes with China and an increasing negative image of China internationally, the book is conceived as a handbook reflecting the experiences of observers who provide helpful hints to better understand and appreciate Chinese culture without being blindfolded by multiple traps and pitfalls. The book features a selection of articles published in the Macau Ricci Institute Journal (MRIJ) in its first six issues from 2017 through 2020. The essays featured in this book provide elements for a frank appraisal of China''s Belt and Road Initiative, by highlighting the PRC government''s aspirations for the project, while examining these in the light of the practical problems encountered by both hosts and representatives among the participants in BRI projects.
