Zrod záměru postavit Mistru Janu Husovi pomník se váže k debatě na jednání českého zemského sněmu 25. listopadu 1889 ohledně umístění tabulky s Husovým jménem na budovu Národního muzea. Záhy poté vznikl Spolek pro zbudování pomníku Mistra Jana Husa. Rozhořčené tiskové polemiky a bojovné diskuse se vedly zejména o tom, má-li Husův pomník stát na Staroměstském náměstí vedle sloupu s mariánskou sochou, nebude-li představovat kámen úrazu pro katolíky, je-li Hus v první řadě českým vlastencem nebo náboženským reformátorem. Oslavy Husa jako národní integrační postavy měly vyvrcholit ve velkolepé celonárodní manifestaci u příležitosti odhalení pomníku. Dne 6. července 1915 se však plánovaná velká česká slavnost nekonala: vypukla světová válka, a tak mohla proběhnout jen malá česká slavnost za zavřenými dveřmi. Ani po vzniku Československé republiky se Husův pomník nestal výrazným místem české historické paměti, ačkoliv po stržení mariánského sloupu 3. listopadu 1918 na Staroměstském náměstí osaměl. Autorem knihy je doc. PhDr. Jan Galandauer, DrSc., významný historik, který se specializuje na české dějiny a dějiny habsburské monarchie od poloviny 19. století.
