Some of these either surrendered at sea or directly in a variety of ports, whilst the majority were taken over whilst moored in German bases in Norway, Denmark and France. Every aspect of the NER s history is considered in this concise but comprehensive volume from the engineering works required to carry its lines through the rugged terrain which it served, to the development of its locomotives and services and later its early efforts to electrify part of its network. Fallschirmjäger - německé elitní výsadkové jednotky, které Spojenci nazývali zelenými dábly“ a v Československu je podle slova der Jäger (příslušník elitní pruské pěchoty, ale také myslivec) přezdívali „padákovými myslivci Jak jste poznali již v prvním dílu, největší operací Zelených ďáblů byla operace Merkur, přepadení a okupace Kréty v květnu 1941. Byla to doba, kdy tehdy jediná (První) divize Fallschirmjäger Luftwaffe a rovněž jediná, 22. vzdušná výsadková divize spadající pod pozemní sily (Heeres) opravdu operovaly ze vzduchu pomocí výsadků a byly vysazovány buď z letadel, jako byl Junkers JU-52, nebo třímotorový Junkers Ju-252 (později JU-352) nebo byly na místo dopravovány pomocí kluzáků tažených za dopravními letadly, jako byl kluzák Gotha, či dokonce Me-321 Gigant pro 200 mužů výsadku, který byl později motorizován jako Me-323 Gigant a se šesti motory uvezł 15 tun nákladu, nebo 140 vojáků. Také ostatní vybavení výsadkářů bylo prvotřídní. Hlavní zbraní se vedle samopalu MP-40 stala od roku 1943 takzvaná výsadkářská puška (Fallschirmjägergewehr) FG-42, předobraz dnešních univerzálních automatických zbraní, k dopravě były užívány motocykly BMW R-75 s poháněným sidecarem, pásové „motocykly Kettenkrad, polopásové transportéry Sakíz 250, 251 a 253 v nejrůznějších modifikacích, výsadkář měli ve výzbrojí stíhače tanků, prvotřídní kanony FLAK ráže 88mm v tažené i samohybné verzi a další zbraně a vozidla.Paradesantni jednotky byly Hitlerovou oblíbenou zbrani. Snad pproto po krvavém vítězství na Krété již nedovolil žádnou rozsáhlou vzdušnou výsadkovou operaci, Sešlo i z velké operace Herkules k obsazení Malty, plánované na rok 1942. Postupně se z paradesantních jednotek staly elitní jednotky pěchoty. A jako celé německé ozbrojené síly postupně přestávaly být jednoznačně útočnou silou a stále více se stávaly obránci. Tak výsadkáři bránili německé pozice v Tunisku Casserinském průsmyku, na Sicilii, u Anzia a na Monte Cassinu, v Římě i Toskánsku, v Sovětském svazu u Leningradu, Kijeva a v Bělorusku, v Normandii na poloostrově Cotentin, u Arnhemu ph operaci Market Garden, v ruhrské kapse v Německu, na Rýně u Remagenu a nakonec při marné obraně Berlína, kde byla zničena 9. divize Fallschirmjäger vytvořená v roce 1944 právě k obraně hlavního města a přístupů k němu. A tak od roku 1942 uskutečnily německé paradesantní jednotky jen málo vzdušně-výsadkových operací a to přesto, že byly vytvářeny další vzdušně výsadkové divize Fallschirmjäger - 2. a 4. v roce 1943, 3 .. 5. a 9. v roce 1944 a 10. v roce 1945. Výjimku tvoříl výsadek na řecký ostrov Leros v roce 1943 a zejména osvobození italského diktátora Mussoliniho z internace na hoře Gran Sasso v září 1943, kterému velel na základě výběru samotného Hitlera příslušník SS Otto Skorzeny. K poslednímu vzdušnému výsadku Zelených dáblů došlo při zimní ofenzívě 1944/1945 v Ardenách.

Josefem Tomešem a doplněná o memoárová ohlédnutí předsedy České národní rady profesora Alberta Pražáka a jejího prvního místopředsedy Josefa Smrkovského. Bez ohledu na rozdílnost politických orientací a snah svých autorů se všechny vzpomínky shodují v závěru, že povstání napsalo heroickou kapitolu v dějinách Prahy a že prokázalo odhodlání českého národa bojovat za svou svobodu.
