Aktualizované vydání Brockettových Dějin divadla představuje přehled dějin divadla od doby jeho vzniku až do současnosti. Publikace, která vyniká mimořádným rozsahem a šíří záběru, mapuje vývoj divadelní tvorby v Evropě, ve Spojených státech amerických, ale také v Asii a Africe. Nové české zpracování vychází primárně z původního českého překladu z let 1999 a 2008 a zároveň se opírá o poslední, desáté americké vydání z roku 2008.
