Autobiografický román starší sestry dvou slavných bratrů - Isaaca Bashevise a Israela Joshuy Singerových - vyšla poprvé v jidiš v roce 1936, později byla autorčiným synem přeložena do angličtiny. Je to patrně jediný román, který dává čtenářům nahlédnout do života ženy vyrůstající v ortodoxní židovské rodině v Polsku na počátku dvacátého století, kdy svět tradičního štetlu zvolna ustupoval modernímu životu. Stejně jako její bratři i Esther popisuje svět zalidněný rabíny a studenty ješivy, gangstery i socialistickými rebely, pouličními prodavači a švadlenkami.
