In the past, they have supplied a variety of problematic misfits, but they surpass themselves with their latest effort - an American named James Bland.Having met Bland previously, when he was left in no doubt that the American led a life coloured by secrets and skulduggery, Hamish isn''t surprised when he discovers the real motive behind Bland''s police secondment involves him in helping track down a spy ring, some members of which have met grisly ends. That investigation tears Hamish away from Lochdubh at a time when the village is suffering a disturbing spate of increasingly violent burglaries. The identity of the burglar, however, is a perplexing mystery. All of that blows Hamish''s quiet life out the window and puts a serious strain on his relationship with female paramedic, Claire. But his days aren''t as tranquil as his dreams. For one thing, Priscilla''s renovation schemes are driving him out of his cottage. Not to mention her ambitious plans for his career as a policeman away from Lochdubh. This might be a good time to find out why Peter Hynd''s arrival in nearby Drim was causing so much trouble. An attractive, unmarried man with an independent income would always attract attention in such a small place. But this time Hynd''s arrival seems to have caused bitter rivalry among the women of Drim. Hamish finds their petty fights amusing and a clever excuse to avoid Priscilla and her schemes for a new electric stove (to replace his beloved woodburning appliance), a posh new bathroom, and virtuous nutrition. No wonder she''s been crowned Queen of Cosy Crime'' Mail on SundayNow that Priscilla Halburton-Smythe has agreed to marry him, Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth can''t imagine a more perfect life. There''s not much crime in his remote Scottish village of Lochdubh, nothing much at all to do but fish, drink coffee, and slouch around. And now to spend time with lovely Priscilla. Amusing, that is, until death threats, physical abuse, and murder make statistical history ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The Death of Prince George, Duke of Kent, 1942 - Melissa Morgan-Oakesová
To the fifteen passengers and crew onboard the lumbering Short Sunderland flying boat, everything appeared normal and routine as it lifted off from the seaplane base at RAF Invergordon on Sunday, 25 August 1942. Its destination was Iceland, where one of the passengers, Air Commodore HRH Prince George, The Duke of Kent, supported by his entourage, was to undertake an inspection of various RAF bases in Iceland in his role as a senior RAF Welfare Officer. It was about thirty minutes later that disaster struck. At 13.42 hours, the Sunderland ploughed into a hillside on the remote headland known as Eagle's Rock, near Dunbeath in Caithness. Apart from the rear gunner, everyone on board, including Prince George, was instantly killed. There was a Court of Inquiry, which opened on 28 August and completed on 1 September. This resulted in a disagreement between two senior officers in relation to its conclusion. The funeral of the Duke surprisingly, took place on the 29th during the Court of Inquiry. There was also a rapid and thorough wreckage clearance of the scene by 16 September and the apparent disjointed recording of the various men’s deaths with the registrar. Pilot error was the official cause ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Gatsby: Death of an Irishman - Patrick O'Sullivan Greene
To tie in with the 100 year anniversary of The Great Gatsby, Gatsby: Death of an Irishman delivers a compelling and new insight into the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the genesis of The Great Gatsby.Fitzgerald once told a friend that ‘Gatsby started as one man I knew and then changed into myself.’ Jay Gatsby’s story is one of aspiration and reinvention, so was Fitzgerald’s. The book shows how Fitzgerald dramatized the most powerful emotional experiences of his own life in the novel; from his childhood in the Midwest, Ivy League education at Princeton, literary success in New York, partying on Long Island, and marital struggles on the French Riviera.Underpinning Scott’s brilliant, but turbulent, life was his complex, evolving and surprising relationship with his Irish heritage. Scott’s journey went from childhood shame in St. Paul at being ‘common’ Irish to a patriotic immersion in Irish literature and revolutionary politics at Princeton. But the shame never went away, reinforced when the poor boy found he could not marry the rich girl. He tried to escape it; first through his imagination as a boy, and then through self-invention as a young man, then in his writing, and throughout his adult life ... Unknown localization key: "more"

During childhood, she was agitated about the monsters under her bed (Were they comfy enough?). Going into labor, she fretted about making a fuss (“Sorry to interrupt, but the baby is coming out of my body,” I said politely). Winning a prestigious award, she agonized over receiving free gifts after the ceremony (It was an excruciating experience. Mortifying). The Diary of a Nobody - George Grossmith, Weedon Grossmith
Channelling a razor-sharp satire through the everyday mishaps of the immortal comic character Mr Pooter, George and Weedon Grossmith''s The Diary of a Nobody is edited with an introduction and notes by Ed Glinert in Penguin Classics.Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions, content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. In the bumbling, absurd, yet ultimately endearing character of Pooter, the Grossmith brothers created a wonderful portrait of the class system and the inherent snobbishness of the suburban middle-class suburbia - one which sends up the late Victorian crazes for Aestheticism, spiritualism and bicycling, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody. This edition contains the original illustrations by Weedon Grossmith and an introduction by Ed Glinert, author of The London Compendium, discussing the novel''s serialisation in Punch, the growth of the suburbs and the figure of Mrs Pooter.George Grossmith (1847-1912) initially worked as a journalist, reporting Police Court proceedings for The Times.
