Data Analysis for Social Science - Kosuke Imai, Elena Llaudet
An ideal textbook for complete beginnersâ ”teaches from scratch R, statistics, and the fundamentals of quantitative social scienceData Analysis for Social Science provides a friendly introduction to the statistical concepts and programming skills needed to conduct and evaluate social scientific studies. Assuming no prior knowledge of statistics and coding and only minimal knowledge of math, the book teaches the fundamentals of survey research, predictive models, and causal inference while analyzing data from published studies with the statistical program R. It teaches not only how to perform the data analyses but also how to interpret the results and identify the analysesâ ™ strengths and limitations. Progresses by teaching how to solve one kind of problem after another, bringing in methods as needed. It teaches, in this order, how to (1) estimate causal effects with randomized experiments, (2) visualize and summarize data, (3) infer population characteristics, (4) predict outcomes, (5) estimate causal effects with observational data, and (6) generalize from sample to population. Flips the script of traditional statistics textbooks. It starts by estimating causal effects with randomized experiments and postpones any discussion of probability and statistical inference until the final chapters. This unconventional order engages students by demonstrating from the very beginning how data analysis can be used to answer interesting questions, while reserving more abstract, complex concepts for later chapters. Provides a step-by-step guide to analyzing real-world data using the powerful, open-source statistical program R, which is free for everyone to use. The datasets are provided on the bookâ ™s website so that readers can learn how to analyze data by following along with the exercises in the book on their own computer. Assumes no prior knowledge of statistics or coding. Specifically designed to accommodate students with a variety of math backgrounds. It includes supplemental materials for students with minimal knowledge of math and clearly identifies sections with more advanced material so that readers can skip them if they so choose. Provides cheatsheets of statistical concepts and R code. Comes with instructor materials (upon request), including sample syllabi, lecture slides, and additional replication-style exercises with solutions and with the real-world datasets analyzed. Looking for a more advanced introduction? Consider Quantitative Social Science by Kosuke Imai. In addition to covering the material in Data Analysis for Social Science, it teaches diffs-in-diffs models, heterogeneous effects, text analysis, and regression discontinuity designs, among other things.

A Framework for K-12 Science Education - National Research Council, Board on Science Education, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Educati
Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity s most pressing current and future challenges. The United States position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments. Philosophy of Social Science - Mark Risjord
Philosophy of Social Science: A Contemporary Introduction examines perennial questions of philosophy through engaging the empirical study of society. Questions of normativity concern the place of values in social scientific inquiry. Questions of naturalism concern the relationship between the natural and the social sciences.ã And questions of reductionism ask how social institutions relate to the people who constitute them.ã This accessible text offers a comprehensive overview of debates in the field, with special attention to new research programs. Topics include the relationship of social policy to social science, interpretive research, cognitive and evolutionary explanations, intentional action explanation, rational choice theory, conventions and social norms, joint intentionality, causal inference, and experimentation.ã Detailed examples of social scientific research motivate the philosophical questions and illustrate the important concepts. Treating philosophical commitments as implicit in social science, students of the social sciences will benefit from its application of philosophical argument to methodological and theoretical problems. The text argues that social science transforms philosophical questions, and students of philosophy will benefit from its direct engagement with contemporary debates. The Second Edition provides updates with the most recent literature and adds two new chapters: one on modeling and one on the role of race and gender in the social sciences.Key Updates to the Second Edition:A new chapter on Modeling and Explaining, which explores how models represent social systems and whether highly idealized models explainA new chapter on Race and Other Social Constructions, capturing much of the recent empirical research and philosophical interest in the social construction of categories like race and genderRevised and updated chapters throughout, clarifying earlier presentations and bringing discussions from the First Edition into line with new researchUpdated annotated Further Reading lists, which now include relevant publications from 2013 to 2022.

Social Science - Alexander Betts
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, InspiringSocial science is the study of human behaviour. It offers the tools to understand and explain people s choices and actions, and how they live together in communities. With insights from social science, organisations and individuals may be persuaded to change their behaviour, making a difference in addressing societal challenges, from climate change to fighting pandemics and alleviating poverty. Social science can offer us the answers to key questions, such as why do some people gamble, eat unhealthy foods, or hold racist beliefs? How do families allocate household tasks, raise children effectively, or manage grief? How do companies weigh profit against environment sustainability, decide to invest in innovation, or adopt policies to address unequal pay between women and men? Why do countries sign international treaties, commit human rights atrocities, or transition from authoritarianism to democracy? Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this Very Short Introduction offers an accessible overview of social science, explaining how methods and theory from different disciplines can be applied and combined to address major global challenges. It aims to equip students, scholars, and practitioners to analyse, interpret, and undertake social science research. Geographical Data Science and Spatial Data Analysis - Chris Brunsdon, Lex Comber
We are in an age of big data where all of our everyday interactions and transactions generate data. Much of this data is spatial ⠓ it is collected some-where ⠓ and identifying analytical insight from trends and patterns in these increasing rich digital footprints presents a number of challenges.Whilst other books describe different flavours of Data Analytics in R and other programming languages, there are none that consider Spatial Data (i.e. the location attached to data), or that consider issues of inference, linking Big Data, Geography, GIS, Mapping and Spatial Analytics. This is a ⠘learning by doing⠙ textbook, building on the previous book by the same authors, An Introduction to R for Spatial Analysis and Mapping. It details the theoretical issues in analyses of Big Spatial Data and developing practical skills in the reader for addressing these with confidence.

The U.S. intelligence community (IC) is a complex human enterprise whose success depends on how well the people in it perform their work. Although often aided by sophisticated technologies, these people ultimately rely on their own intellect to identify, synthesize, and communicate the information on which the nation s security depends. The IC s success depends on having trained, motivated, and thoughtful people working within organizations able to understand, value, and coordinate their capabilities. Intelligence Analysis provides up-to-date scientific guidance for the intelligence community (IC) so that it might improve individual and group judgments, communication between analysts, and analytic processes. The papers in this volume provide the detailed evidentiary base for the National Research Council s report, Intelligence Analysis for Tomorrow: Advances from the Behavioral and Social Sciences. The opening chapter focuses on the structure, missions, operations, and characteristics of the IC while the following 12 papers provide in-depth reviews of key topics in three areas: analytic methods, analysts, and organizations. Informed by the IC s unique missions and constraints, each paper documents the latest advancements of the relevant science and is a stand-alone resource for the IC s leadership and workforce. The collection allows readers to focus on one area of interest (analytic methods, analysts, or organizations) or even one particular aspect of a category. As a collection, the volume provides a broad perspective of the issues involved in making difficult decisions, which is at the heart of intelligence analysis.

Non-humans in Social Science II - Petr Gibas, Karolína Pauknerová, Marco Stella
The book explores the issue of non-humans and their role and position within contemporary social sciences. Inspired by current trends of bridging the dichotomy of nature and culture, the authors use the non-human as a prism that offers a different perspective of the world, society, culture and last but not least, deing(s). To start paying attention to non-humans has the potential to hybridize social sciences and in turn enrich them as well as to offer social scientists novel perspectives and tools to approach social phenomena. Such an attitude might in turn lead to a rassessment of understanding of the relationship between the world and being, and of the categories of being and subject, hence the potential of non-humans to stimulate an ontological shift within social sciences. The view of the human and non-human as oppositional categories is a remnant of essentially modernist thinking. This book represents a response in terms of an attempt to think about humans and non-humans autside of the binary division. The authors thus want to contribute to the hybridization of social sciences and throughout the book they deal with ontological, epistemological and thematical shifts stemming from the hybridization. If the non-humans does not exist as a negation, the boundary between the two becomes unclear and overlapping. It is with this hybridization, the blurring of the boundaries, that we are able to come closer to those who inhabit the world? Non-humans and humans alike.

A Philosophy for the Science of Animal Consciousness - Walter Veith
This book attempts to advance Donald Griffin s vision of the final, crowning chapter of the Darwinian revolution by developing a philosophy for the science of animal consciousness. It advocates a Darwinian bottom-up approach that treats consciousness as a complex, evolved, and multidimensional phenomenon in nature rather than a mysterious all-or-nothing property immune to the tools of science and restricted to a single species. The so-called emergence of a science of consciousness in the 1990s has at best been a science of human consciousness. This book aims to advance a true Darwinian science of consciousness in which its evolutionary origin, function, and phylogenetic diversity are moved from the fieldÂ’s periphery to its very centre, thus enabling us to integrate consciousness into an evolutionary view of life. Accordingly, this book has two objectives: (i) to argue for the need and possibility of an evolutionary bottom-up approach that addresses the problem of consciousness in terms of the evolutionary origins of a new ecological lifestyle that made consciousness worth having and (ii) to articulate a thesis and beginnings of a theory of the place of consciousness as a complex evolved phenomenon in nature that can help us to answer the question of what it is like to be a bat, an octopus, or a crow.A Philosophy for the Science of Animal Consciousness will appeal to researchers and advanced students interested in advancing our understanding of animal minds as well as anyone with a keen interest in how we can develop a science of animal consciousness.

Non-Humans and after in Social Science - Petr Gibas, Karolína Pauknerová, Marco Stella
This book is the third in a series exploring the potential of non-humans to illustrate and inspire an approach in which the pre-established boundaries of scholarly thought and practice blur so that new directions in theory and research can emerge. Humans and non-humans are co-present in the world. For long, they have seemed and been thought of as an ontological binary opposition with humans elevated above the rest. As this book series testifies, recently, there has been a move in social sciences towards non-humans as they provide new prisms to look at issues that have for long been of interest to social sciences. This growing interest in non-humans shatters the ontological assumptions about the difference between humans and the rest of life forms as well as reappraises the relationship between humans (and non-humans) and inanimate objects. What the individual chapters in this book as well as the volume as such elaborate on is the fact that humans and various non-humans are not as separate as they have been believed to be; they sometimes encounter and even co-create each other to the extent where the delimitations start to disappear. Non-humans differ from humans in many respects. However, at certain moments, the difference does not necessarily have to be what governs the relationship between them. To understand what happens when humans and non-humans encounter each other needs a more nuanced perspective. This is what the individual chapters in this book hope to achieve. What the book calls for and the chapters exemplify is a need of a close reading of how the co-presence of diverse entities, humans as well as various non-humans, influences their presence and the boundaries between them at given moments of sharing, forming and inhabiting the world.

Visible Learning for Social Studies, Grades K-12 - Julie Stern, John Hattie, Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey
Help students move from surface-level learning to the transfer of understanding. How do social studies teachers maximize instruction to ensure students are prepared for an informed civic life? VISIBLE LEARNING® for Social Studies, Grades K-12 shows how the field is more than simply memorizing dates and factsâ ”it encapsulates the skillful ability to conduct investigations, analyze sources, place events in historical context, and synthesize divergent points of view. Encouraging learners to explore different facets of society, history, geography, and more, best practices for applying visible learning to social studies curriculum are presented through: ·        A scaffolded approach, including surface-level learning, deep learning, and transfer of learning ·        Examples of strategies, lessons, and activities best suited for each level of learning ·        Planning tools, rubrics, and templates to guide instruction Teachers must understand the impact they have on students and select approaches to maximize that impact. Systems Thinking For Social Change - David Peter Stroh
David Stroh has produced an elegant and cogent guide to what works. Research with early learners is showing that children are natural systems thinkers. This book will help to resuscitate these intuitive capabilities and strengthen them in the fire of facing our toughest problems. ⠔Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline Concrete guidance on how to incorporate systems thinking in problem solving, decision making, and strategic planning⠔for everyone!Donors, leaders of nonprofits, and public policy makers usually have the best of intentions to serve society and improve social conditions. But often their solutions fall far short of what they want to accomplish and what is truly needed. Moreover, the answers they propose and fund often produce the opposite of what they want over time. We end up with temporary shelters that increase homelessness, drug busts that increase drug-related crime, or food aid that increases starvation. How do these unintended consequences come about and how can we avoid them? By applying conventional thinking to complex social problems, we often perpetuate the very problems we try so hard to solve, but it is possible to think differently, and get different results.Systems Thinking for Social Change enables readers to contribute more effectively to society by helping them understand what systems thinking is and why it is so important in their work. It also gives concrete guidance on how to incorporate systems thinking in problem solving, decision making, and strategic planning without becoming a technical expert.Systems thinking leader David Stroh walks readers through techniques he has used to help people improve their efforts on complex problems like:ending homelessnessimproving public healthstrengthening educationdesigning a system for early childhood developmentprotecting child welfaredeveloping rural economiesfacilitating the reentry of formerly incarcerated people into societyresolving identity-based conflictsand more!  The result is a highly readable, effective guide to understanding systems and using that knowledge to get the results you want.

This Foundation Workbook is designed to support the development of key literacy and numeracy skills of students in the 1-3 grade range, as well as building confidence in answering open response questions. The amount of scaffolded support decreases throughout the workbook to encourage independent learning.- Summarises all the Foundation content to be learned for each topic- Provides plenty of practice questions- Builds confidence by showing how to answer questions or work through calculations- Helps students to improve their answers by focusing on use of key scientific vocabulary, how to link key concepts, and work with graphsEach topic opens with a bulleted summary of the key ideas, reminding students of the key scientific vocabulary and equations they should be able to recall. The questions begin with confidence-building, low demand questions (multiple choice, matching, sentence completion or closed short answer) leading to more open questions including calculations as part of structured questions. The questions include applying and analysing as well as recall, for example bringing in skills used in analysing results from practical work.Frequent support notes provide hints and tips on key vocabulary, how to answer open response questions (for example by writing causal explanations), strategies for decoding questions (for example by identifying key words in the question) and how to interpret information from tables and graphs.â ˜Show meâ ™ writing frames demonstrate how to build longer answers, how to work with equations in science and how to convert units. In later pages the level of scaffolding is gradually reduced by removing the guided support so that students are supported in becoming independent learners throughout their GCSE course.
