Georges Sorel (1847-1922) byl francouzský politický myslitel, vnímaný hlavně jako teoretik revolučního syndikalismu. Proslul knihou Úvahy o násilí, v níž předložil svou obhajobu revolučního násilí. V krátkém spisku Rozklad marxismu (1908) chce Sorel marxistickou doktrínu zbavit strnulosti a dogmatismu, do nichž v jeho době upadla. Za tím účelem se snaží odkrýt skutečné jádro Marxova myšlení a očistit je od cizorodých složek, zděděných po starších socialistických naukách. Vymezuje marxismus jednak vůči utopismu, jednak vůči blanquismu. Zatímco první se pokouší radit vůdcům společnosti, marxismus se zajímá výhradně o organizaci proletariátu; a zatímco druhý chce prostřednictvím politické strany dobýt státní moc, marxismus zůstává oddaný myšlence třídního boje a absolutní revoluce. Za nejvěrnější uskutečnění Marxových idejí proto Sorel považuje soudobý revoluční syndikalismus. Dílo Iluze pokroku (1908) představuje pokus zkoumat myšlenku pokroku pomocí Marxových historických metod, podle nichž je výklad idejí nutné založit na porozumění třídním vztahům. Sorel sleduje dějiny pojmu pokroku a kritizuje jej coby buržoazní ideologii, od níž se proletariát má oprostit. Vůbec ovšem nezavrhuje technický pokrok jako takový ani nepopírá jeho existenci; staví se však proti ideologii, která svádí ke kvietismu tím, že považuje pokrok za zaručený, a která jej chápe primárně jako hromadění intelektuálních poznatků. Proti této klamné buržoazní představě o pokroku staví reálný pokrok moderního průmyslu, který je plodem technických dovedností proletariátu.
