London has a history that emerges from the mist of time some 1500 years ago and is one that evolves yet never ends. It has always been a breeding ground for crime as people from around the world are drawn by its numerous attractions and opportunities. Each generation has produced its own colourful cast of robbers, murderers and fraudsters. Much of the crime was prompted by poverty and foul living conditions, but the main driver has always been the desire or need for money by whatever means and the risks involved. Until the eighteenth century this often involved a trip to perform ‘the Tyburn jig’ in front of a baying crowd of thousands. For a time Londoners staggered around in a gin-induced haze. Mothers often abandoned or even sold their children, just for a chance to block out the horrors of a seething London. The lanes and alleys around Covent Garden were lined with prostitutes, many still children. Famous beauties were kept by aristocrats and royalty and referred to as courtesans, although in many cases the dividing line between them and their less fortunate sisters lining the streets was thin indeed. The ending of the Great War saw the appearance of drugs, although at this stage they were mainly confined to the rich and influential as London entered the ‘jazz age’. The second world war and the Blitz was not all about the spirit and bravery of Londoners, as gangs plundered wrecked houses and even stole from corpses. After the war the likes of the violent Jack Spot and Billy Hill were superseded by the Kray twins and the sadistic Richardson brothers, as they fought for control of London’s drinking clubs. A little light relief was offered throughout the years by a succession of sexual scandals. Those particularly welcome involved senior politicians. A heady brew indeed covering centuries of crimes and indiscretions brought together this very readable account by author and social historian Mike Hutton.

Audiokniha: Komentář k původním LP 1218 0478: Když jsem byl vyzván, abych po dokončení mladofrotovní populárně vědecké publikace Proměny malých scén (Máj 1983) vypracoval pro Supraphon jakési její zvukové pokračování či zvukový "pandán", považoval jsem to zprvu za jedinečnou příležitost, jak prezentovat před širší veřejností neopakovatelný a většinou jen divadelním zasvěcencům důvěrně známý svět dnešních malých divadel a divadélek. Těšil jsem se však pouze do chvíle, než jsem si uvědomil základní ošidnost celého projektu: tkví-li v něčem specifické kouzlo malých netradičních scén, pak je to právě v oné neopakovatelné jiskře, elektrizující večer co večer jeviště a hlediště, jiskře, dokonale nepřenosné kamkoliv jinam mimo intimní prostor malého divadla a v útlumu nahrávacího studia neodvratně hasnoucí. Nehledě k tomu, že nejvlastnější účin zmíněných scén určitě nespočívá v precizně zvládnutém mluveném či zpívaném slově, nýbrž v celkové atmosféře, v kouzlu právě vznikající improvizace a samozřejmě i ve složce vizuální (netradiční výtvarné pojednání intimního prostoru) a mimické: příklad Bolka Polívky z Divadla na provázku nechť mluví za všechny další. Ale pak jsem si řekl, že bude-li gramofonový snímek rezignovat na celkový vyčerpávající obraz a bude se místo toho věnovat především těm skupinám a jednotlivcům, jež sázejí v prvé řadě na slovo - ať již mluvené či zpívané - a v neposlední řadě i na humor (který patří a vždycky patřil svým neučesaným, neuctivým kritickým ostřím k nejcennějším devizám těchto scén), pak půjde pro současné malé formy opravdu o velkou šanci, již by byl hřích nevyužít. Sympaticky zněl mým uším i rezolutní požadavek vydavatelů, aby přednost dostali především ti tvůrci, kteří dosud nemají žádnou desku a kteří nejsou - a v dohledné době ani nebudou - zrovna denními hosty masových médií. Tolik na vysvětlenou, proč se na desce nesetkáte například se zvučnými jmény protagonistů Semaforu, ale ani Ypsilonky, Divadla Járy Cimrmana, s Miroslavem Horníčkem apod. Výběr byl zaměřen na tvůrce relativně mladé a "nezavedené" - a už vůbec nebyl brán zřetel na jejich případný amatérský či profesionální statut. Právě v oblasti malých scén je totiž hranice mezi profesionalismem a amatérismem pojmem velmi mlhavým. Neboť řada mladých amatérských skupin zájmové umělecké činnosti podává v tomto oboru špičkové výkony, převyšující běžný profesionální standard (namátkou: brněnská X-ka či Divadelní studio J. Skřivána, M-dílna, Dětské, resp. Mladé studio Divadla na provázku, pražská Vizita, Sklep, Teatrzyk apod.). Výrazná účast a nebývalá iniciativa amatérů v této oblasti svědčí o trvale vzestupném celospolečenském zájmu i potřebě právě tohoto druhu tvořivosti mladých lidí. A nyní stručně k jednotlivým ukázkám: Jan Burian (syn národního umělce E. F. Buriana) a Jiří Dědeček vystupují spolu již přes deset let. Za tu dobu vyprodukovali kolem patnácti původních autorských pořadů, těžících z neuvěřitelně širokého zázemí tří set (!) dokončených písní. Jejich texty se svou gellnerovskou zpěvností i otevřeností staly nepochybně trvalou součástí živé poezie posledního desetiletí a po publicitě již léta volají: často jest nám slýchati i čísti textů o poznání méně poetičtějších, méně vtipnějších i současnějších, než jsou texty B+D. - Vitiza je naopak souborem mladým až nejmladším (vznikla jako typický vysokoškolský soubor roku 1981). Ústřední autorsko-interpretační dvojice Borna+Dušek spojuje prvky text-appealového, vyprávěného, "epického" divadla s prvky aktuální společenské satiry, jejíž intelektuální kalibr můžeme srovnávat s kalibrem někdejší tvorby V+W. Stálý host Vizity, harmonikář Václav Koubek představuje typ samorostlého moderního barda, navazujícího na přebohaté tradice neoficiálních pražských lidových písničkářů. - K ukázkám Bratří Justů z pražského Rubínu (zde od roku 1975) se jako bratrská polovina nemohu dost dobře objektivně vyjadřovat. Předávám tedy slovo časopisu Tvorba z 26. 5. 1982: "Bří Justové očišťují nikoli posměškem, grimasou, ale satirou, nadsázkou, vědomě deformovaným obrazem, který však přitom neustále myslí na člověka... Zejména v jednom ze závěrečných monologů Referát (Přednáška) a Kritika na tento referát, demaskují v možné podobě potenciálního parazita, schopného všeho, jen ne myslet". - Sdružení přátel mírného humoru Š.O.U. je jednou z mnoha brněnských malých scén netradičního zaměření. Trojice Šimek-Opluštil-Unzeitig svým originálním hudebním i textovým profilem dokazuje, že pojem "brněnský kabaret" může znamenat i cosi zcela opačného, než jsou Stréček Křópal apod. Pozoruhodné spojení moravského folklorismu s rockovým světem má hodnotu až básnické koláže, satiricky odhalující nové pohledy na skutečnosti a mýty moderní doby.
