Nervalovy vrcholné prózy zabydlují především ideální přízraky žen, které tuto samotu vlastně generují, protože iniciační rituál vyžaduje, aby adept k těmto "sirénám" stoupal oproštěný od všeho ostatního. Může si ponechat jen svůj sen, ale i o něj nakonec přichází.
