Close to the Knives - David Wojnarowicz

I am glad I am alive to witness these things; giving words to this life of sensations is a relief. Smell the flowers while you can.Close to the Knives is the artist, writer and activist David Wojnarowicz s extraordinary memoir. Filthy, beautiful, and sharp to the point of piercing, it is both an exploration of the world seen through the eyes of an artist, and a moving portrait of a generation living, grieving, and dying through the AIDS crisis. It is a triumphant hymn of resistance, and a dizzying celebration of the joys of seeing and living in the world.

Shockingly Close to the Truth! - James W. Moseley, Karl T. Pflock

This amusing, revealing, and entertaining romp through the confused and controversial history of the UFO craze is a must for believers and skeptics alike. Shockingly Close to the Truth! is the first and only comprehensive tell-all history of ufology from two men who have been at the center of this cultlike movement for close to half a century. James W. Moseley conveys the fun he has had over the years pursuing tall tales and purported evidence of visitors from outer space. As the creator of the newsletter Saucer Smear--the source on the follies, foibles, fads, and feuds of ufology--Moseley has the inside scoop on the amazing world of serious UFO sleuths and wigged-out saucer fiends. His co-author, Karl T. Pflock, has been tracking reports of unidentified flying objects for close to half a century and has written the most thorough investigation of the Roswell incident ever done. For Moseley it all began as a lark in 1953 when he drove across country and interviewed almost 100 UFO experts and eyewitnesses, including former president Harry S Truman. After all these years, his account of this journey is here published for the first time, a goldmine for anyone interested in modern social and ufological history. He also talks candidly about his encounters with and assessments of leading UFO personalities, including Budd Hopkins, George Adamski, J. Allen Hynek, and many others. In addition, he reveals the whole truth behind the infamous Straith letter hoax, the real origins of the Men in Black, and the true story of George Adamski s alleged 1952 encounter with a man from Venus. Along the way he recounts his incredible adventures as a grave robber of pre-Columbian artifacts in Peru (Move over Indiana Jones!), to which there is also a bizarre UFO connection. Complementing the exuberant narrative are many original photos of famous persons and events from Moseley s private collection, plus facsimile reproductions of the Straith letter and the complete October 1957 special Adamski expose issue of Smear s predecessor, Saucer News. A feast for UFO buffs this book will also interest students of popular culture, social trends, and the psychology of belief.

The Frayed Atlantic Edge - David Gange

COLLECTIVE WINNER OF THE HIGHLAND BOOK PRIZE AND SHORTLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZEâ ˜This is the book that has been wanting to be written for decades: the ragged fringe of Britain as a laboratory for the human spiritâ ™ Adam NicolsonOver the course of a year, leading historian and nature writer David Gange kayaked the weather-ravaged coasts of Atlantic Britain and Ireland from north to south: every cove, sound, inlet, island. The idea was to travel slowly and close to the water: in touch with both the natural world and the histories of communities on Atlantic coastlines. The story of his journey is one of staggering adventure, range and beauty. For too long, Gange argues, the significance of coasts has been underestimated, and the potential of small boats as tools to make sense of these histories rarely explored. This book seeks to put that imbalance right.Paddling alone in sun and storms, among dozens of whales and countless seabirds, Gange and his kayak travelled through a Shetland summer, Scottish winter and Irish spring before reaching Wales and Cornwall. Sitting low in the water, as did millions in eras when coasts were the main arteries of trade and communication, Gange describes, in captivating prose and loving detail, the experiences of kayaking, coastal living and historical discovery.Drawing on the archives of islands and coastal towns, as well as their vast poetic literatures in many languages, he shows that the neglected histories of these stunning regions are of real importance in understanding both the past and future of the whole archipelago. It is a history of Britain and Ireland like no other.

Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning (1784701483)

Kniha - autor Timothy Snyder, 462 stran, anglicky, Brožovaná bez přebalu matná - autor Timothy Snyder, 462 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu matná We have come to see the Holocaust as a factory of death, organised by bureaucrats. Yet by the time the gas chambers became operation more than a million European Jews were already dead: shot at close range over pits and ravines. They had been murdered in the lawless killing zones created by the German colonial war in the East, many on the fertile black earth that the Nazis believed would feed the German people. It comforts us to believe that the Holocaust was a unique event. But as Timothy Snyder shows, we have missed basic lessons of the history of the Holocaust, and some of our beliefs are frighteningly close to the ecological panic that Hitler expressed in the 1920s. As ideological and environmental challenges to the world order mount, our societies might be more vulnerable than we would like to think.Timothy...

River of the Gods - Millard Candice

â ˜This complex, compelling tale is told with simplicity and grace - The TimesA story of courage and adventure, set against the backdrop of the race to exploit Africa by the colonial powers. For millennia the location of the Nile River s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the mid-19th century, Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke were sent by the Royal Geographical Society to claim the prize for Britain. Burton spoke twenty-nine languages, and was a decorated soldier. He was also mercurial, subtle, and an iconoclastic atheist. Speke was a young aristocrat and Army officer determined to make his mark, Burtonâ ™s opposite in temperament and beliefs. From the start the two men clashed. They would endure tremendous hardship, illness, and constant setbacks. Two years in, deep in the African interior, Burton became too sick to press on, but Speke did, and claimed he found the source in a great lake that he christened Lake Victoria. When they returned to England, the two became sworn enemies.Yet there was a third man on both expeditions, his name obscured by imperial annals, whose exploits were even more extraordinary. This was Sidi Mubarak Bombay, who was enslaved and shipped from his home village in East Africa to India. When the man who purchased him died, he made his way into the local Sultanâ ™s army, and eventually travelled back to Africa, where he used his resourcefulness, linguistic prowess and raw courage to forge a living as a guide. Without Bombay and men like him, who led, carried, and protected the expedition, neither Englishman would have come close to the headwaters of the Nile, or perhaps even survived.

Mountain Commandos at War in the Falklands - Rodney Boswell

Sunset, 8 June 1982, East Falkland. Eight specially trained Royal Marines infiltrate Goat Ridge, a long rocky hilltop between Mount Harriet and Two Sisters which are occupied by a battalion of 600 Argentine infantry. The next day, from their hiding place just metres away from the enemy, they note and sketch the Argentine positions, then withdraw as stealthily as they had come. Their daring patrol provides essential intelligence that guided the British assault which overwhelmed the Argentine defences two days later. This was just one example of the missions undertaken by the Royal Marines Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre during the Falklands War, all of which are described in graphic detail in Rod Boswellâ ™s eyewitness account. Using his own recollections and those of his comrades, he describes their operations in the Falklands â “ the observation posts set up in the no manâ ™s land between San Carlos and Port Stanley, their role in the raid at Top Malo House, and the reconnaissance patrols they carried out close to the Argentine lines during the conflict. His first-hand account gives a fascinating insight into the operational skills of a small, specially trained unit and shows the important contribution it made to the success of the British advance. It also records the entire experience of the Falklands War from their point of view â “ the long voyage south through the Atlantic, the landings, the advance and the liberation of Stanley.

The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog - Carly Anne York

York is a witty, whip-smart, lithely engaging science storyteller, truly one of our best Mary Roach, author of Stiff and Fuzz A playful examination of how science s silliest research leads to crucial breakthroughs and enduring insights. Why would anyone research how elephants pee? Or study worms who tie themselves into a communal knot? Or quantify the squishability of a cockroach? Carly Anne York shows how unappreciated, overlooked and simply curiosity-driven science has led to breakthroughs big and small. Got wind power? You might have humpback whales to thank. Know anything about particle physics? Turns out there is a ferret close to the heart of it all. And if you want to keep salmon around, be thankful for that cannon! The research itself can seem bizarre, but it drives our economy. York invites us to appreciate the often-unpredictable journey of scientific exploration, highlighting that the heart of science lies in the relentless pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Emphasizing the hard work of the people behind the discoveries, this is an accessible, story-driven book that shows how important and exciting it is to simply let curiosity run wild.

Restoring the Inner Heart - Mary Naumenko

Written close to the end of the great writer?s life, Fyodor Dostoevsky?s short story The Dream of a Ridiculous Man tells of a transformation of the heart and a journey from despair to joy: a joy that can be known by all through the experience of God that transcends a simply rational discourse. In this eye opening literary study, the title character and his spiritual metamorphosis are examined in depth in light of the ancient concept of Nous as it developed from the Greek philosophers to the Christian fathers. By comparing the ?Ridiculous Man? to similar characters in Dostoevsky?s corpus, the author shows how an Orthodox Christian understanding of the Nous underpins Dostoevsky?s own anthropology and how his literary works in turn guide the reader toward a truer vision of humanity.

A wonderful book, I don t expect to read a better memoir for a very long time. ROBERT WEBB, author of How Not To Be A Boy Funny and heart breaking in equal measure FERN BRADY, author of Strong Female Character The guiltiest of literary pleasures: a memoir that you open with trepidation and stay up til 6am to finish KATE SPICER, author of Lost Dog. Compelling, edgy and always hilarious. Absolutely essential reading. JOSIE LONGWhen Krystal Evans was 14, the house that she shared with her mother and little sister burned down. Narrowly escaping by breaking a window and jumping out head-first Krystal suffered burns, smoke inhalation, and the unimaginable tragedy of losing her sister. That Evans has written such a warm and disarmingly funny memoir about what led the family to that fatal night, and how they coped with its aftermath, is nothing less than astonishing. This is a spellbinding story of growing up poor in America, living with a mentally ill mother, and having a wolf for a pet (really). From the indignities of being rejected from a summer camp for burn victims, to putting up with a succession of her mom s increasingly shady friends and partners, Krystal and Katie s childhoods were marked by adult chaos, inappropriate behaviour, and never knowing what the next day would bring. But, writing with joy, skill and candour, we witness Krystal growing as a person from the ashes of disaster into the confident, funny, and (reasonably) well-hinged adult, mother and comedian that she is today. At the same time, funny, tragic and inspiring, it is the story of a family dangerously close to the edge, and of a girl struggling to make her way into adulthood, once the smoke clears.

A sweeping history of and meditation on humanity s relationship with machines, showing how we got here and what happens nextFaith in technological fixes for our problems is waning. Automation, which promised relief from toil, has reactivated the long-standing fear of job redundancy. Information technology, meant to liberate us from traditional authority, is placing unprecedented powers of surveillance and control in the hands of a purely secular Big Brother. And for the first time, artificial intelligence threatens anthropogenic disaster â “ disaster caused by our own activities. Scientists join imaginative writers in warning us of the fate of Icarus, whose wings melted because he flew too close to the sun. This book tells the story of our fractured relationship with machines from humanityâ ™s first tools down to the present and into the future. It raises the crucial question of why some parts of the world developed a â ˜machine civilisationâ ™ and not others, and traces the interactions between capitalism and technology, and between science and religion, in the making of the modern world.Taking in the peaks of philosophy and triumphs of science, the foundation of economics and speculations of fiction, Robert Skidelsky embarks on a bold intellectual journey through the evolution of our understanding of technology and what this means for our lives and politics. â ˜Unless we understand technology as a system of ideas rather than as a necessity,â ™ he writes, â ˜we will be powerless to choose which technology is best suited to our needs and purposes.â ™

In the Midst of Civilized Europe - Jeffrey Veidlinger

FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD * SHORTLISTED FOR THE LIONEL GELBER PRIZE⠜The mass killings of Jews from 1918 to 1921 are a bridge between local pogroms and the extermination of the Holocaust. No history of that Jewish catastrophe comes close to the virtuosity of research, clarity of prose, and power of analysis of this extraordinary book. As the horror of events yields to empathetic understanding, the reader is grateful to Veidlinger for reminding us what history can do.⠝⠔Timothy Snyder, author of BloodlandsBetween 1918 and 1921, over a hundred thousand Jews were murdered in Ukraine by peasants, townsmen, and soldiers who blamed the Jews for the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. In hundreds of separate incidents, ordinary people robbed their Jewish neighbors with impunity, burned down their houses, ripped apart their Torah scrolls, sexually assaulted them, and killed them. Largely forgotten today, these pogroms⠔ethnic riots⠔dominated headlines and international affairs in their time. Aid workers warned that six million Jews were in danger of complete extermination. Twenty years later, these dire predictions would come true.Drawing upon long-neglected archival materials, including thousands of newly discovered witness testimonies, trial records, and official orders, acclaimed historian Jeffrey Veidlinger shows for the first time how this wave of genocidal violence created the conditions for the Holocaust. Through stories of survivors, perpetrators, aid workers, and governmental officials, he explains how so many different groups of people came to the same conclusion: that killing Jews was an acceptable response to their various problems. In riveting prose, In the Midst of Civilized Europe repositions the pogroms as a defining moment of the twentieth century.

Landscapes of the Soul

Switzerland is home to illustrious soul-searchers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712⠓1778) and Carl Gustav Jung (1875⠓1961). The small country in the heart of Europe has a density of historic and current hotspots of psychiatry and psychoanalysis like hardly any other place in the world. From Geneva to Zurich, from Kreuzlingen, on the shore of the Lake Constance in the north, to Monte Verità near Ascona, close to the Italian border in the south, a dense network stretches across the map. Switzerland as a psycho-geographic space thus became a hub of psychoanalysis with a global reach.Coinciding with C.G. Jung s 150th birthday, this book for the first time contextualises his thought and influence with the overall history of psychoanalysis in Switzerland. Besides Jung, its protagonists include, among other, Ludwig Binswanger, pioneer of existential psychology; Jean Piaget, best-known for his research of child development; Goldy and Paul Parin-Matthèy and Fritz Morgenthaler, co-founders of the Zurich School of Ethno-psychoanalysis; and Judith le Soldat with her radical feminist Nimbus theory.Twelve thematic essays by distinguished authors are supplemented and put into perspective by key historical texts and art works, as well as visual material and documents, many of them from archives that have so far been virtually inaccessible.

The King

This book looks at the life, activities and achievements of William, 1st Baron Sandys, Knight of the Garter. It is the story of a Hampshire man who, during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, achieved prominence from a relatively modest but well-connected position. He was very close to the centres of power throughout most of his life and was inevitably involved in the political and religious issues of the time. His relationships with Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell and senior courtiers are discussed. Evidence is presented that suggests that Sandys played a role in the downfall of Anne Boleyn. From the time he fought in the battle of Stoke in 1487, where he was knighted by Henry VII, to his death, Sandys was regarded as an outstanding soldier and was feared and respected by his French opponents. He rose from Treasurer of War in the 1512 Spanish campaign and Treasurer of Calais between 1517 and 1526 to become, for the last fourteen years of his life, Chamberlain to Henry VIII. In the 1520s he built himself the Vyne mansion, which has been described as a palace and was visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I on multiple occasions. He also extended the Holy Ghost Chapel in Basingstoke and converted Mottisfont priory to another mansion. All were furnished to the highest standards and taste using English and Flemish craftsmen.

Born at the turn of the twentieth century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother, who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is the Duke #39;s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out. Nine years later, she returns, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House, navigates the factions in the family and town, and finally comes into her own as a bold, sometimes reckless bootlegger. #39;Jeannette Walls created my new favorite hero in her protagonist, Sallie Kincaid.
