A tak jí maminky brzy začnou volat, aby se poradily, jak léčit dětské nemoci jako hubatida, lakomice, ještěchvilkína nebo čurbesajda. Paní Láryfáry ale nerozdává kouzelné pilulky, kdepak. V dalším období svého života se Betty MacDonaldová usadila v Seattlu, kde v době světové hospodářské krize vystřídala mnoho zaměstnání, o čemž se čtenáři mohou dočíst v románu Kdokoli může dělat cokoli (1950). V období 1937–1938, kdy onemocněla tuberkulózou, pobývala v plicním sanatoriu. Zážitky z tohoto krušného období zaznamenala v románu Morová rána (1948). V roce 1942 se autorka provdala za Donalda C. MacDonalda (1910–1975) a spolu s dcerami přesídlili na ostrov Vashon v blízkosti Seattlu. Život na ostrově se všemi jeho specifiky autorka vylíčila v knize Dusím se ve vlastní šťávě (1955). Z ostrova se MacDonaldovi odstěhovali v roce 1956, kdy koupili ranč v Kalifornii. Betty MacDonaldová zemřela na rakovinu v pouhých padesáti letech v roce 1958. Její humoristické romány (poslední tři jsou v českém překladu známé pod souborným názvem Co život dal a vzal) dodnes sklízejí neobyčejný úspěch, snad proto, že autorce se daří doslova nabíjet čtenáře nadějí, že žádná překážka není nepřekonatelná a žádná situace beznadějná. Úsměvná vyprávění americké autorky Betty MacDonaldové si získala oblibu svou bezprostředností a upřímností.
