Celosvetovo známy dramatik a prozaik Anton Pavlovič Čechov (1860 - 1904) podnikol v roku 1890 na svoju dobu bezprecedentnú cestu naprieč celým Ruskom na ostrov nútených prác - ostrov Sachalin. Zámerom spisovateľa bolo poukázať na rozpor medzi oficiálnym pohľadom na sachalinskú skutočnosť a objektívnymi výsledkami jeho výskumu; vytvoriť pravdivý obraz založený na presných faktoch, obraz ruských nútených prác a vzbudiť v spoločnosti záujem o "miesta neznesiteľných útrap". Čechov trpiaci tuberkulózou, ktorou sa nakazil od jedného zo svojich pacientov, postupne zhromaždil usvedčujúce fakty o živote v trestaneckej kolónii a opísal otrasný život vyhnancov v cárskej ríši. Samotný Sachalin označil za "stelesnenie pekla" a "miesto všadeprítomného zla". Výsledkom jeho cesty bola kniha Ostrov Sachalin, ktorá doslova otriasla ruskou verejnosťou. "Ak by pán Čechov okrem tejto knihy už nič iné nenapísal, jeho meno by aj tak bolo navždy zapísané do histórie ruskej literatúry." Takto hodnotili Ostrov Sachalin novinové články. A čoskoro došlo k niečomu pre Rusko nevídanému: po vydaní knihy a obrovskom spoločenskom ohlase bola vláda nútená reformovať legislatívu týkajúcu sa nútených prác a vyhnancov.

Na idylu ovšem brzy dopadá stín. Příznaky tuberkulózy dokáže doktor Čechov na sobě rozpoznat stejně jako jeho magistr Kovrin své šílenství ve fatě morganě černého mnicha. V Kovrinově závěrečném chrlení krve pak Čechov bezděčně předjal podobu své smrti.
