The Little Book of North American Mammals - Robert Miles
Discover the remarkable world of North American mammals in one compact book! The Little Book of North American Mammals, part of the Little Library of Natural History, introduces kids to dozens of North America''s most fascinating creatures with details about their habitats, diets, lifespans, and more. Gorgeous vintage artwork by some of the world''s most enduring nature illustrators fill this irresistible volume. From the book: Perhaps no North American animal is quite as impressive up close as a fullyantlered bull moose. Moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family and are often six to seven feet tall at the shoulders. Including the head and antlers, they can tower ten feet high, stretch eight to ten feet in length, and weigh up to 1,800 pounds-in other words, they''re huge! With a long, homely face and a droopy upper lip, a moose''s face looks rather like a horse''s (they''re not related). Since they have such long, lanky legs, moose appear to be walking on stilts, giving them a clumsy appearance. But don''t be fooled-they can run up to thirty-five miles per hour and can easily run you down. These animals don''t mind the cold, even extreme cold, though they ... Unknown localization key: "more"

An Analysis of Bernard Bailyn's The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution - Etienne Stockland, Joshua Specht
Historians of the American Revolution had always seen the struggle for independence either as a conflict sparked by heavyweight ideology, or as a war between opposing social groups acting out of self-interest. In The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, Bernard Bailyn begged to differ, re-examining familiar evidence to establish new connections that in turn allowed him to generate fresh explanations. His influential reconceptualizing of the underlying reasons for America''s independence drive focused instead on pamphleteering – and specifically on the actions of an influential group of ‘conspirators’ who identified, and were determined to protect, a particularly American set of values. For Bailyn, these ideas could indeed be traced back to the ferment of the English Civil War – stemming from radical pamphleteers whose anti-authoritarian ideas crossed the Atlantic and embedded themselves in colonial ideology. Bailyn''s thesis helps to explain the Revolution''s success by pointing out how deep-rooted its founding ideas were; the Founding Fathers may have been reading Locke, but the men they led were inspired by shorter, pithier and altogether far more radical works. Only by understanding this, Bailyn argues, can we understand the passion and determination that allowed the rebel American states to defeat a global superpower.

Now it''s your turn to meet them in The Little Book of North American Birds, part of the Little Library of Natural History. Discover dozens of North America''s most remarkable birds with details about their habitats, diets, wingspans, and more. Gorgeous vintage artwork by some of the world''s most enduring nature illustrators fill this irresistible volume. From the book: The name flamingo originates with the Spanish and Latin word flamenco, meaning ''fire.'' Their bright-colored feathers are not only glamorous, but the bold, pink color comes from a flamingo''s food. Similar to ibis, flamingos feed on algae and crustaceans that have carotenoid pigments. The pigments, once ingested, create a flamingo''s pink coloring. However, a flamingo''s color doesn''t come at birth. Several years must pass before they reach peak color and grow their distinctive curved bills. Flamingos are incredibly social birds; they congregate in a flock called a flamboyance and are always near bodies of water. Here, flamingos find mates for life and begin families with one egg per year.

'With icy remorselessness, it puts paid to any notion that the horrors of modern history might be an aberration - for it tells of universal war, of terrorism, revolution and genocide' Tom HollandThe long life-and-death struggle between Athens and Sparta plunged the ancient Greek world into decades of war. Thucydides was an Athenian and achieved the rank of general in the earlier stages of the war, and in this detailed, first-hand contemporary account he writes as both a soldier and a historian. He applies a passion for accuracy and a contempt for myth and romance in compiling a factual record of a ruinous conflict that would eventually destroy the Athenian empire.Translated by Rex Warner with an introduction and notes by M. Spike Lee's Bamboozled and Blackface in American Culture - Elizabeth L. Sanderson
Spike Lee''s challenging film Bamboozled (2000) is often read as a surface level satire of blackface minstrelsy. Careful analysis, however, gives way to a complex and nuanced study of the history of black performance. This book analyzes the work of five men, minstrel performer Bert Williams, director Oscar Micheaux, writer Ralph Ellison, painter Michael Ray Charles, and director Spike Lee, all through the lens of this misunderstood film. Equal parts biography and cultural analysis, this book examines the intersections of these five artists and Bamboozled, and investigates their shared legacy of resistance against misrepresentation.

The 28th Infantry Division and the Battle of the Bulge - Walter S. Zapotoczny Jr.
This book is not another battle chronicle. It is an examination of how the motivations of individual soldiers to fight and win can make the difference in battle, especially in the face of overwhelming odds. In December 1944, the American 28th Infantry Division occupied an 85-mile front extending along Germany''s borders with Belgium and Luxembourg. There they repelled a desperate attempt by Hitler to drive a wedge through the Allied lines to the port of Antwerp, which he believed would buy his scientists the time they needed to complete development of the super weapons forecast to turn the tide of the war. This book explores the first-hand accounts of men of the 28th Infantry Division, who, with extraordinary tenacity, held the line through December 1944 and January 1945, and the chaplains who attended their religious needs. It assesses the efforts of the U.S. government to inspire its soldiers to fight for the American way of life, and how these efforts filtered onto the battlefield, shaping the resolve of the men asked, if necessary, to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The Dominion of Flowers - Mark Laird
How a wave of exotic botanical imports from across Britain’s empire shaped its gardens and psyche  Between 1760 and 1840, exotic plants were imported from across Britain’s empire and were lavishly depicted in periodicals and scientific treatises as specimens collected alongside other objects of natural history. Mark Laird’s provocative new book—part art history, part polemic—weaves fine art, botanical illustration, and previously unpublished archival material into a political and ethical account of Britain’s heritage, showing how plants were not only integral to English gardens of the Georgian and Victorian eras but also to British culture more broadly.  The Dominion of Flowers shines with captivating cross-cultural plant stories. The book opens with the Seymers’ exotic Butterflies and Plants and Pulteney’s catalogue of Dorset’s native wildflowers. It then moves to the German artist John Miller and his illustrations for Lord Bute’s Botanical Tables and concludes by tracing Britain’s fascination with New Zealand’s unique flora, first depicted in Mary Delany’s collages.  Copiously illustrated with almost two hundred works, and drawing on Laird’s genealogical research into his own family’s colonial past, this volume foregrounds Indigenous ideas about “plant relations†in a study that brings the trans-oceanic movement of plants and people alive. ... Summer in the Shadow of Byron - Andrew McConnell Stott
Villa Diodati. 1816.In a villa on the shore of Lake Geneva, Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and his young wife Mary, gathered for the summer. For three glittering months, this party of young bohemians would share their lives, charged with sexual and artistic tensions. It was a period of extraordinary creativity from which would emerge some of the masterworks of the Romantic period, including Frankenstein. But there were two other guests at the villa that summer, for whom the season would not be so rosy. With Byron came his young physician, John Polidori, a man with literary aspirations of his own. And joining Mary was her step-sister, the beautiful Claire Clairmont. For Byron and the Shelleys, their stay by the lake would serve to immortalise them in the annals of literary history. But for Claire and Polidori, the Swiss sojourn would scar them forever.

In To Explain the World, pre-eminent theoretical physicist Steven Weinberg offers a rich and irreverent history of science from a unique perspective - that of a scientist. Moving from ancient Miletus to medieval Baghdad to Oxford, and from the Museum of Alexandria to the Royal Society of London, he shows that the scientists of the past not only did not understand what we understand about the world - they did not understand what there is to understand. Yet eventually, through the struggle to solve such mysteries as the backward movement of the planets and the rise and fall of tides, the modern discipline of science emerged.

The Letter to the Romans - Emil Brunner
The Letter to the Romans, in Emil Brunner''s estimations, is, of all the books of the Bible, the closest to a theological treatise. Throughout centuries of Christian history, much has depended on the understanding and evaluation of Paul''s letter to the Romans.Theologians have continued to consider the central questions of interpretation: what did Paul want to say to the Romans, and what does God want to say to us today? In Brunner''s meditation on the great Epistle, he elucidates the Pauline arguments and interpretations which have long been foundational to Christian belief.

Once, there were giants in the heavens: billion-dollar machines of wonder and science that flew to the outermost planets and told us what secrets had been lying in wait. In charge of the people and processes behind these missions was a humble father of five who did the job not for money or prestige but simply because it represented a challenge like no other. That man was John Casani. The full story of his unparalleled life and career is told here for the first time. Young Casani was obsessed with the mechanical world yet lacked direction in life. After restarting college for an engineering degree, he then whimsically road-tripped to California in the late 1950s and was hired, almost by accident, at Pasadena’s secretive Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Beginning as a workaday technician, Casani rose through JPL’s ranks to senior management-while battling politics, funding, physics, and occasionally colleagues. With inborn skill and uncommon methods he kept his troops focused on success. Casani ran eight-figure space missions off the index cards in his shirt pocket, once employed a live goat to press people into action, and even sent messages to aliens in space.
