Finally caught and imprisoned in 1944, they were sentenced to death in 1945, saved at the very last moment by the armistice.

Měl k svému oboru výborné životní předpoklady, jeho otec byl básník Jorge Guillén, z plejády velkých španělských básníků Lorkovy generace, matka byla Francouzka; vícejazyčné prostředí se mu rozšířilo v exilu, v Kanadě a pak dlouhodoběji v USA, kam patnáctiletý Claudio Guillén odjel s otcem po porážce španělské republiky. Počátkem padesátých let působil na univerzitě v Kolíně nad Rýnem.
