Knihu vytvořili bratři Tomáš a Martin Welsovi jako dárek pro své rodiče k Vánocům roku 1938. Podařilo se jim zachytit každodenní život jejich rodiny v Praze na konci třicátých let 20. století. Svazek je sestaven z dialogů a scén s výjevy z rodinného života Welsových, v mnoha ohledech dodnes typických, v jiných naopak nepředstavitelných. Autorem ilustrací je výtvarně nadaný mladší ze sourozenců Martin (1925-1944). V knize se střídá čeština s němčinou, tento stav odráží tehdejší jazykovou situaci v Praze. Dále se objevuje angličtina a francouzština. Všechny texty jsou přeloženy a grafické řešení umožňuje, že je kniha jazykově přístupná nejen českému čtenáři, ale i jinojazyčným mluvčím. Název Sancta Familia (Svatá rodina) vyjadřuje zkratkou rodinné vztahy: "Když mají dobrou náladu, mají se moc rádi, a někdy se hádají tak, že by se roztrhli. S matkou Martin vtipkuje, že, když tam jednou bude celá rodina, budou moci v Americe otevřít rodinnou restauraci s vepřenkami. I přes humor a láskyplné škádlení prosvítá nejistota a obavy. "Rodina se do budoucna nemá čeho bát," píše ale Martin na konci knihy, "doufejme, že brzy najde nový domov a bude pokračovat v klidu v této divadelní hře." Už v říjnu 1938 požádala celá rodina o emigrační vízum do Spojených států. Rudolf a Ida se oba narodili do západočeských židovských rodin. O Rudolfových předcích, chudých maloobchodních z Rokycanska, se můžeme dočíst v pamětech U "Bernatů",které napsal jeho otec Šimon Wels v roce 1919. Tomášovi je osmnáct, Martin je o pět let mladší. Výtvarné nadání zdědil Martin asi po otcovi. V době vzniku knihy byl Rudolf Wels již velmi úspěšným architektem, autorem řady zajímavých a originálních projektů. Události se ale odvíjely jinak, než jak si bratři přáli: Tomášovi se podařilo odejít včas. V dubnu 1939, krátce po březnové okupaci, utekl přes Polsko do Velké Británie, kde za války sloužil v britské armádě. Martinovi a jeho rodičům Idě a Rudolfovi byla žádost o vízum do Spojených států odložena. Byli zavražděni v Osvětimi 8. března 1944. Tomáš se vrátil do Prahy hned po válce, ale nikoho tu už neměl. To, co se z rodinného archivu zachovalo, vzal s sebou zpátky do Anglie. Později měl svou rodinu, o minulosti ale nikdy nemluvil a nikdy neotevřel krabici, ve které se zachovala i kniha Sancta Familia.

Martin Preiss (*1973) již během studia herectví na pražském DAMU hostoval v činohře Národního divadla, poté chvíli také působil v Plzni v divadle J.K.Tyla. V roce 1998 se stal členem činohry Národního divadla. Objevuje se také na televizní obrazovce, často v seriálech. Proslavil se i díky moderování soutěžního pořadu Chcete být milionářem? Kromě herectví a moderování se Martin Preiss věnuje dabingu, četbě pro rozhlas nebo audioknih. Libor Hruška (*1965) po konzervatoři působil ve Státním divadle Ostrava a následně v několika pražských divadlech jako např. Divadle pod Palmovkou či v Karlínském divadle. Před kamerou ztvárnil řadu menších rolí. Proslul zejména jako bravurní a vyhledávaný dabér a svůj hlas propůjčil několika tisícům postav. V dabingu se uplatňuje také jako režisér. Roku 2006 získal Cenu Františka Filipovského.
