Fotografovat začal Roman Burda (1966) soustavně teprve po první návštěvě Afriky. Etiopská krajina a zvyky a rituály tamních lidí ho natolik uchvátily, že se od té doby do oblasti řeky Omo stále vrací. Dnes už má mezi domorodci přátele, u kterých přespává, prožívá s nimi rodinné události, pomáhá jim vyřizovat úřední záležitosti a vozí jim dárky, o které ho žádají. Oni mu zase umožňují zažívat a dokumentovat mizející Afriku, obřady a slavnosti, které už sotva někdo nafotografuje, protože mnohé, zejména ty násilné a nebezpečné, jsou dnes zakázány. To také pro řadu zdejších mimo jiné znamená, že nemohou opustit svou vesnici a navštívit město; kdyby policista u někoho zahlédl na těle rituální jizvy, z nichž každá znamená zabitého nepřítele, dotyčný by už zřejmě nevyšel z vězení. Lidé od řeky Omo totiž své vlastní zákony stále dodržují. Ojedinělá je rovněž Burdova série snímků z období dešťů, kterou nafotografoval "zevnitř", mezi domorodci, když se k nim za vydatné pomoci zdejších lidí, kteří jeho džíp doslova přetlačili přes rozbahněná území, dostal na samém jeho začátku.
