Book of Haikus - Jack Kerouac
Renowned for his Beat Generation novel "On the Road", Jack Kerouac was also a master of the haiku, the three-line, seventeen-syllable Japanese poetic form. Written by a Kerouac scholar, this work supplements a core haiku manuscript from Kerouac's archives with a generous selection of the rest of his haiku, from various sources.

Kniha haiku - Jack Kerouac

Visions of Cody - Jack Kerouac
An experimental novel which remained unpublished for years, Visions of Cody is Kerouac''s fascinating examination of his own New York life, in a collection of colourful stream-of-consciousness essays. Transcribing taped conversations between members of their group as they took drugs and drank, this book reveals an intimate portrait of people caught up in destructive relationships with substances, and one another. Always fixated by Neal Cassady - the Cody of the title, renamed for the book along with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs - Kerouac also explores the feelings he had for a man who would inspire much of his work.

The Penguin Book of Haiku
''A revelation'' Sunday Times, Books of the Year 2018The first Penguin anthology of Japanese haiku, in vivid new translations by Adam L. Kern. Now a global poetry, the haiku was originally a Japanese verse form that flourished from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Although renowned for its brevity, usually running over three lines in seventeen syllables, and by its use of natural imagery to make Zen-like observations about reality, in fact the haiku is much more: it can be erotic, funny, crude and mischievous. Presenting over a thousand exemplars in vivid and engaging translations, this anthology offers an illuminating introduction to this widely celebrated, if misunderstood, art form. Adam L. Kern''s new translations are accompanied here by the original Japanese and short commentaries on the poems, as well as an introduction and illustrations from the period.

And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks - Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs
In alternating chapters that reveal a nascent period in their development as two of the twentieth century''s most influential writers, Beat Generation icons William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac''s And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is an electrifying true-life mystery, including afterword by James Grauerholtz in Penguin Modern Classics. This is a hardboiled crime novel, and a true story. In 1944, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, then still unknown writers, were both arrested following a murder: one of their friends had stabbed another and then come to them for advice - neither had told the police. Later they wrote this fictionalised account of that summer - of a group of friends in wartime New York, moving through each other''s apartments, drinking, necking, talking and taking drugs and haphazardly drifting towards a bloody crime. Desolation Peak - Jack Kerouac
"Something will happen to me on Desolation Peak…I can feel it." In the summer of 1956, Jack Kerouac hitchhiked from Mill Valley, CA, to the North Cascades to spend two months serving as a fire lookout for the US Forest Service. Taking only the Diamond Sutra for reading material, he intended to spend his time in deep contemplation and to achieve enlightenment. He wrote in his journal that he planned "to concentrate on emptiness of self, other selves, living beings, and universal self." In letters to friends he proclaimed, "Something will happen to me on Desolation Peak…I can feel it." Kerouac''s experience on Desolation Peak forms the climax of his novel The Dharma Bums and has also been depicted in part 1 of Desolation Angels and a chapter in his nonfiction book Lonesome Traveler. None of these versions offers a full, true picture, however; and for that reason, Desolation Peak is essential reading. What separates Kerouac from all other writers is the depth that he went in exploring his own consciousness, and what will prove his most enduring legacy is the record he left of that exploration, revealing the psyche of a sensitive, tortured artist grappling with himself in the ... Duluozova marnost - Jack Kerouac
Jack Kerouac o svém díle často hovořil jako o souvislém celku tvořícím tzv. Duluozovu legendu a právě Jack Duluoz, autorovo alter ego, stojí v tomto případě přímo v názvu knihy, takže není pochyb o tom, co, nebo lépe řečeno kdo, bude hlavním tématem. Jack Duluoz své ženě, a tím pádem i čtenáři, vypráví, čím vším si musel projít v letech 1935-46.

Big Sur - Jack Kerouac
Autobiografický román Big Sur z roku 1962 patří k tomu nejlepšímu, co Jack Kerouac napsal. Existenciální a tvůrčí krize, kterou prochází jeho románové alter ego Jack Duluoz, se promítá do rytmu prózy, jejíž účinky jsou místy až hypnotické. Jack, vyčerpaný věčným flámováním a dotěrnou pozorností fanoušků i novinářů, prchá přes celé Státy až k pobřeží Tichého oceánu, do chaty skryté na dně Ratonského kaňonu u Big Sur.

The Buddhist Years - Jack Kerouac
A brand new volume of previously unpublished writings from the archives reflecting Jack Kerouac’s Buddhist thinkingFrom a young age Kerouac was a spiritual thinker and questioner, and he always considered himself a spiritual writer. Buddhism gave more meaning to Jack’s work as a writer: he was working not for personal accomplishment and glory but for human betterment. And Buddhism justified his lifestyle: with its vision of the material world as empty and illusory, he was free to do what he wanted. This collection shows Jack at his earnest, soulful best. The writing is consistently and wonderfully Kerouacian: it is honest, reflective, heartfelt, and revealing, with great characterizations amid his self-exploration as he wrestles with his consciousness, desperate for belief.

Na ceste - Jack Kerouac
Román Na ceste spôsobil v Amerike konca päťdesiatych rokov kultúrny výbuch a Jack Kerouac sa stal ikonou novej, spontánnej a odtabuizovanej literatúry. Jack Kerouac (1922 - 1969) je jedným z najvýznamnejších predstavite?ov beat generation a autorom troch zbierok poézie a vyše pätnástich, často autobiografických, románov. V sedemnástich si zbalil kufre a presťahoval sa do New Yorku. V Kerouacovom diele nájdeme silné ovplyvnenie katolíckou vierou, budhistickými meditáciami i jazzovými improvizáciami. Napriek jeho túžbe po otvorenosti a necenzurovanej spontánnosti zažíval obdobia ťažkých depresií a osamelosti. Na následky alkoholom podlomeného zdravia zomrel vo veku štyridsaťsedem rokov.

Big Sur - Jack Kerouac
In 1960 Jack Kerouac was near breaking point. Driven mad by constant press attention in the wake of the publication of On the Road, he needed to ''get away to solitude again or die'', so he withdrew to a cabin in Big Sur on the Californian coast. The resulting novel, in which his autobiographical hero Jack Duluoz wrestles with doubt, alcohol dependency and his urge towards self-destruction, is one of Kerouac''s most personal and searingly honest works. Ending with the poem ''Sea: Sounds of the Pacific Ocean at Big Sur'', it shows a man coming down from his hedonistic youth and trying to come to terms with fame, the world and himself.

As they hitch, hop freight trains, walk and talk their way across the world, from California to Mexico, London to Paris and on to opium-ridden Tangiers, Kerouac chronicles their poetry, partying, mountain vigils and spiritual contemplation with unsurpassable energy and humanity. Jack Kerouac called Doctor Sax, the enigmatic figure who haunted his boyhood imagination, ''my ghost, personal angel, private shadow, secret lover''. In this extraordinary autobiographical account of growing up in Lowell, Massachussetts, told through his fictional alter ego Jack Duluoz, he mingles real people and events with fantastical figures to capture the accents, scents, sights and texture of his childhood: playing among the river weeds and railroad tracks, going to church, witnessing life and death on the street corners. Written when he was staying with William Burroughs in Mexico in 1952, Doctor Sax was Kerouac''s favourite of all his books: a dark, vivid and magical evocation of a boy''s vibrant inner life.

Vize Gerarda - Jack Kerouac
První a nejdojemnější kapitola fiktivního Kerouacova životopisu, "Duluozovy legendy", kterou psal v podstatě celý život, protože látkou i palivem jeho psaní vždy byly vlastní, intenzivně prožívané zkušenosti.

The Life and Zen Haiku Poetry of Santoka Taneda - Oyama Sumita
The fascinating and quirky biography of a disheveled poet, skillfully interwoven with his original works.Zen monk Santoka Taneda (1882-1940) is one of Japan''s most beloved modern poets, famous for his "free-verse" haiku, the dominant style today. This book tells the fascinating story of his life, liberally sprinkled with more than 300 of his poems and extracts from his essays and journals—compiled by his best friend and biographer Sumita Oyama and elegantly translated by William Scott Wilson.Santoka was a literary prodigy, but a notoriously disorganized human being. By his own admission, he was incapable of doing anything other than wandering the countryside and writing verses. Although Santoka married and had a son, he devoted his life to poetry, studying Zen, drinking sake and wandering the length and breadth of the Japanese islands on foot, as a mendicant monk. The poet''s life alternated between long periods of solitary retreat and restless travel, influenced by his tragic childhood. When not on the road, he lived in simple grass huts supported by friends and family. Santoka was a lively conversationalist who was often found so drunk he could only make it home with the help of a friendly neighbor or passerby. But above all, throughout ... Doktor Sax - Jack Kerouac

Andělé zoufalství patří k vrcholům díla Jacka Kerouaca a zároveň k autorovým knihám nejtypičtějším.

The Haunted Life - Jack Kerouac
The Haunted Life is the coming-of-age story of Peter Martin, a college track star determined to idle away what he knows will be one of his last innocent summers in his tranquil New England home town. But with the war escalating in Europe and his two closest friends both plotting their escapes, he realizes how sheltered his upbringing has been. As he surveys the competing influences of his youth, he struggles to determine what might lead to an intellectually authentic life. The Haunted Life is ultimately a meditation on intellectual truth, male friendship and the desire for movement - all themes that would dominate Kerouac's later work.

Now recognized as a modern classic, its American Dream is nearer that of Walt Whitman than Scott Fitzgerald, and it goes racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and autobiographical passion.

Tristessa - Jack Kerouac
Tristessa is a strange fever-dream of morphine sickness and belly-deep sadness. Or, in the words of Allen Ginsberg: ‘a narrative meditation studying a hen, a rooster, a dove, a cat, a chihuahua dog, family meat, and a ravishing, ravished junky lady, first in their crowded bedroom, then out to drunken streets, taco stands, and pads at dawn in Mexico City slums’.
