V terapii pak nestačí pouze vynést příčiny oněch "pocitů" z nevědomí do vědomí; ale měla by být provázena reálným "odčiněním", jež má své zákonitosti a jde o dlouhodobý proces zasahující celou osobnost. Výzvu pro autora představuje zejména Pavlova reinterpretace víry ve vztahu k tradičnímu pojetí zvláště ze strany farizeů, s nímž polemizuje (ale mnohde i souhlasí) Ježíš evangelií. Prvním způsobem je přesvědčení, které pracuje s objektivizací ("víra, že"). Druhým je "důvěra vůči", nesená osobním vztahem věřícího ke svému živému Protějšku. Způsoby, z nichž jeden je bližší řecké pistis, druhý pak hebrejské emuna, se vyskytují v obou konfesích a v jednotlivých fázích jejich historického vývoje převažuje tu jeden, tu druhý. Proroci a Ježíš evangelií, ale i bezejmenní jednotlivci stojí vždy v kritickém bodě uprostřed a volají po přehodnocení a autenticitě. Buber však zároveň upozorňuje, že tyto dva typy není třeba stavět proti sobě a vytvářet z nich antitezi, protože svým způsobem se oba potřebují a doplňují.

Oproti zpozorovaným mezím Marxova přístupu zkoumá a problematizuje myšlenky Proudhona, Kropotkina či Landauera. Buber se domnívá, že názorový střet rozličných návrhů na reformu společnosti trpěl přílišným sklonem k vytváření abstraktních myšlenkových schémat, čímž byla připravována půda pro převahu dogmatické předsudečnosti. Kritické hledisko se v Buberově díle proměňuje v okamžiku, kdy začne pojednávat o dějinné výjimečnosti zakládání kibuců. Na základě předložené typologie uspořádání lidského soužití dochází k závěru, že utopičnost předchozích reformních pokusů získává v tomto novém typu předpoklady pro uskutečnění.
