The Beautiful and Damned - F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Beautiful and Damned, F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel, tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1920s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune. Anthony and his wife Gloria are young and gorgeous, rich and leisured, and dedicate their lives to the reckless pursuit of happiness. But this intimate story turns tragic, as their marriage disintegrates under the weight of their expectations, dissipation, jealousy and aimlessness. Fitzgerald skilfully portrays the east-coast elite as the Jazz Age begins its ascent, engulfing all classes into what will soon be known as Cafe Society. As with all of Fitzgerald's novels, it is a brilliant character study written in breathtaking prose. It is also a gripping account of the complexities of marriage, largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship with his wife, Zelda. The Great Gatsby and Related Stories (Deckle Edge Paper) - James L. W. West III, F.Scott Fitzgerald

Published five years after his stunning 1920 debut, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby established F. Scott Fitzgerald as one of the most important writers of his generation. Its unforgettable characters, poetic prose, and large themes - money, class, and American optimism - have an enduring fascination and make The Great Gatsby a frequent candidate for ''the Great American novel.'' Drawn from the authoritative Library of America edition of Fitzgerald''s collected writings, this deluxe paperback (which features French flaps and deckle-edge paper) presents a new, corrected text of The Great Gatsby by pre-eminent Fitzgerald scholar James L. W. West III. The Library of America text corrects errors, restores Fitzgerald''s preferred American spellings, and incorporates emendations the author made on galley proofs and in his personal copy of the book. Fitzgerald''s masterpiece is joined here by four contemporary stories - the ''Gatsby cluster'' - in which he explored variations on the theme of desperate longing for an unattainable someone or something: ''Winter Dreams,'' ''The Rich Boy,'' ''Absolution,'' and ''Rags Martin-Jones and the Pr-nce of W-les.'' Essential reading for fans of the novel, these, too, are presented in newly corrected texts. Rounding out this special edition is a selection of thirteen letters between Fitzgerald and his editor at Scribner''s, Maxwell Perkins, about the composition, editing, and publication of The Great Gatsby, offering a fascinating glimpse into the genesis of an American classic. Other special features include a preface by James L. W. West, a detailed chronology of Fitzgerald''s life and career, and helpful explanatory and textual notes.

The Pat Hobby Stories - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Written during his tumultuous Hollywood years, a collection of seventeen razor-sharp tales from literary legend F. Scott Fitzgerald, where humor and heartbreak collide through the eyes of a once-successful screenwriter.A fascinating study in self-satire, Fitzgerald pulls back the curtain on the glitz, chaos, and absurdity of the Hollywood movie industry through the eyes of Pat Hobby, a washed-up screenwriter clinging desperately to his faded dreams. Pat’s misadventures offer an entertaining glimpse into the life of a man caught between ambition and reality. Set in 1930s Hollywood—a place where lunchroom gossip held more power than the scripts themselves—Pat’s world is one of desperation and hustle. Once a celebrated writer, he’s now a forgotten relic, scraping by on odd jobs and half-baked schemes. With a drink in one hand and a sarcastic quip in the other, Pat navigates the industry with a blend of cunning and futility. “This was not art, this was an industry,” Pat himself quips, capturing the soul of a system where creativity often takes a backseat to profit. Originally published in Esquire from 1939 to 1940, these stories were born from Fitzgerald’s own struggles as a Hollywood writer. His experiences at Universal Studios shaped every wry line and every bittersweet moment found in this collection. As Arnold Gingrich described in his introduction, this was Fitzgerald’s poignant “last word from his last home.” The result is a deeply personal, darkly funny, and brilliantly crafted portrait of a writer wrestling with his legacy in the twilight of his career. Whether you’re a fan of literary fiction, old Hollywood, or Fitzgerald’s masterful writing, The Pat Hobby Stories will have you marveling at how even in his darkest moments, Fitzgerald could turn life into art.

The Beautiful and Damned - F. Scott Fitzgerald

From Collins Classics and the author of 'The Great Gatsby' comes this razor-sharp satire on the excesses of the Jazz Age.From the author of The Great Gatsby, a tale of marriage and disappointment in the Roaring Twenties.Fitzgerald's rich and detailed novel of the decadent Jazz Era follows the beautiful and vibrant Anthony Patch and his wife Gloria as they navigate the heady lifestyle of the young and wealthy in 1920s New York. Patch is the presumptive heir to his grandfather's fortune, and keeps his equally spoiled wife in comfort while biding time until his grandfather's death. Patch is unable to hold down any kind of job and spends his days in luxury, indulging in whatever pleasures are available. But as the money begins to fail, so does their marriage. Patch's gradual descent into alcoholism, depression and alienation from his marriage ultimately lead to his ruin. Fitzgerald's novel is a remorseless exploration of the horrors of an age of excess and lost innocence.F. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Despite his present popularity, Fitzgerald was often in financial trouble, due to the fact that only one of his novels sold well enough to support the extravagant lifestyle that he and his wife Zelda adopted, and later Zelda's medical bills. His novel The Great Gatsby has sold millions of copies and remains a continual best-seller.

Své hrdiny vylíčil autor s kritickým odstupem a zároveň s mimořádnou empatií. Ambivalence jejich charakterů a pocit jakéhosi nevyčerpatelného tajemství, které si stále znovu přitahují generace čtenářů i tvůrců, kteří o nich chtějí vyprávět. R. Venclová

Tender is the Night / The Last Tycoon - F. Scott Fitzgerald

With an Introduction and Notes by Henry Claridge, Senior Lecturer, School of English, University of Kent at Canterbury. Tender is the Night is a story set in the hedonistic high society of Europe during the `Roaring Twenties'. A wealthy schizophrenic, Nicole Warren, falls in love with Dick Diver - her psychiatrist. The resulting saga of the Divers' troubled marriage, and their circle of friends, includes a cast of aristocratic and beautiful people, unhappy love affairs, a duel, incest, and the problems inherent in the possession of great wealth. Despite cataloguing a maelstrom of interpersonal conflict, Tender is the Night has a poignancy and warmth that springs from the quality of Fitzgerald's writing and the tragic personal experiences on which the novel is based. Six years separate Tender is the Night and The Last Tycoon, the novel Fitzgerald left unfinished at his death in December 1940. Fitzgerald lived in Hollywood more or less continuously from July 1937 until his death, and a novel about the film industry at the height of 'the studio system' centred on the working life of a top producer was begun in 1939. Even in its incomplete state The Last Tycoon remains the greatest American novel about Hollywood and contains some of Fitzgerald's most brilliant writing.

With an Introduction and Notes by Stuart Hutchinson, University of Kent at Canterbury. The Diamond as Big as the Ritz is an ominous fable about the pursuit of great wealth. Readers will be transported to a fabulous fantasy land of such opulence that its very existence has to remain a jealously guarded secret. Fatal consequences lie in store for 'bona fide' guests and uninvited visitors alike, while the sybaritic luxury of the place is evoked in an effortless prose style which is quintessentially F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also featured in this volume are The Cut-Glass Bowl, May Day, The Rich Boy, Crazy Sunday, An Alcoholic Case, The Lees of Happiness, The Lost Decade and Babylon Revisited.

Tender is the Night - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Set in the South of France in the decade after the First World War, Tender is the Night explores the new world of moneyed leisure found by the first generation of idle-rich Americans to take refuge in the French Riviera, bracketed between the horrors of the Great War and the Great Depression to come. It is the story of a brilliant and magnetic psychiatrist named Dick Diver; the bewitching, wealthy, and dangerously unstable mental patient, Nicole, who becomes his wife; and the beautiful, harrowing ten-year pas de deux they act out along the border between sanity and madness. F. Scott Fitzgerald deliberately set out to write the most ambitious and far-reaching novel of his career, experimenting radically with narrative conventions of chronology and point of view and drawing on early breakthroughs in psychiatry to enrich his account of the makeup and breakdown of character and culture. This stunning Macmillan Collector''s Library edition of Tender is the Night features an afterword by Ned Halley.

Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece and a milestone in twentieth-century literature, now beautifully repackaged as part of the Penguin Essentials range.'There was music from my neighbour's house through the summer nights. The riotous throng congregates in his sumptuous garden, coolly debating Gatsby's origins and mysterious past. A detached onlooker, Gatsby is oblivious to the speculation he creates, but always seems to be watching and waiting, though no one knows what for.As the tragic story unfolds, Gatsby's destructive dreams and passions are revealed, leading to disturbing consequences.
