Ty talenty, kterými oplýval malý podvodníček Tom táhnoucí svou bezvýznamnou existenci ze dne na den v ušmudlaném newyorském podnájmu, nebyly totiž žádné povznášející a ušlechtilé schopnosti. Naopak, jestli Tom v něčem skutečně vynikne, pak je to lež, přetvářka, cynismus a zločin. Highsmithová svého antihrdinu provede postupnou proměnou: ze zamindrákovaného mladíčka se vyklube prohnaný parazit šikovně využívající svou známost s mladíkem z milionářských kruhů, posléze nelítostný zločinec vraždící s rozmyslem a z prospěchu a nakonec hotový mistr převleku, který bez sebemenších potíží falšuje svoji identitu. Kdysi toužil po kariéře herce a nyní může konečně svou touhu uskutečnit, s tím rozdílem, že jevištěm je mu sám život. Romány s Tomem Ripleym nejsou detektivky v pravém slova smyslu, ale spíše příběhy o zločinu. Highsmithová nadaná uměním psychologizace, jímž se blíží velkým autorům ?vážné? literatury, nám umožňuje nahlédnout do mysli a pohnutek pachatele, pro něhož je zlo přirozeným vyjádřením vlastní existence. A pokud je pravda, že každý z nás má ke zlu sklony, je rozhodně lepší prožít je nyní v kůži Toma Ripleyho a ty své uzavřít na sto zámků.
