Ke všem těmto otázkám vybírá kniha význačné příklady analyzovaných hebrejských ("starozákonních") textů, antické filosofie, děl moderních i současných myslitelů, a někdy navíc odkazy k historicky a geograficky vzdálenějším kulturám. Nevyhýbá se ani filosofické teologii, která v konfrontaci s archaickými prameny dovoluje úvahy o teorii náboženství. Základní linií knihy nicméně zůstává - vzhledem k jejímu titulu - hledání spojitostí a analogií mezi hebrejskou, resp. raně židovskou literaturou a starověkým řeckým myšlením, protože odtud vedou cesty výše zmíněných otázek. Tomuto hledání se věnuje již první kapitola v zaměření na dobu helénismu. Symbol "Jeruzalém a Athény" je už velmi dávno zavedený (vzhledem k němu nelze opomíjet ani rané křesťanství). Vztahuje se však k oblastem, které většinou bývají studovány odděleně, takže jejich spojování může přinést nové pohledy na otázky, jež působí jako vždy nové. Hebrejská literatura je v knize analyzována historickokritickými postupy, které se začaly rozvíjet teprve v průběhu dějin moderní vědy. Autor má zato, že díky nim je studium hebrejské literatury relevantní i pro religionistiku. Dobově s nimi souvisí také vznik a vývoj filosofie náboženství.
