Ty všechny svedla u společného táborového ohně tahle krásná romantika hvězdných večerů, planoucích ohňů, rozezpívaných sentimentálních srdcí a boje za právo a čest - romantika mladých snů, které unášel čas. Tenkrát jsme ještě nejezdili s Čedokem ani s Doležalovou cestovní kanceláří a stačilo nám jenom pár rekvisit, kalhoty s třásněmi a široký klobouk předělaný na "Volání vlků", abychom mohli být aktéry téhle krásné mladé hry. A takovou kulisu, kterou nám v téhle hře postavila Matka Příroda, takovou by nedokázal žádný sebelepší jevištní výtvarník. Nevím, jestli Jaroslav Žák, který tuhle knížku napsal, jezdil na tramp, ani nevím, jestli Vlastimil Rada, který ji ilustroval, vypadával z bránického expresu, ale rozhodně nás znali. Znali nás a měli nás rádi, právě tak jako my jsme milovali je. Jaroslav Žák byl profesorem na gymnasiu. I já jsem měl takového pedagoga, který, když jsem v sobotu dopoledne při latině nevystrkoval z lavice nohy v kanadkách a neměl jsem opřenou napakovanou tornu o lavici (protože dovnitř se nevšla), měl starost, že jsem onemocněl, že nejedu na tramp. Lidstvo už se zbavilo mnoha nemocí. Ale tuhle epidemii asi nikdo nevyléčí. A tak mi věřte, že to říkám ze srdce, že tuhle desku jsem pro vás dělal strašně rád, i když mě před čtyřiceti léty ani ve snu nenapadlo, že to budu právě já, kdo ji bude číst pro vás, kteří jste to všechno měli, máte a ještě budete mít rádi.
