Ervín Sommer propadne alkoholu, začne zanedbávat obchod a společensky upadá. Po konfliktu s manželkou je uvězněn, poté končí v nelítostném soukolí psychiatrické léčebny. Fallada v tomto románu zúročil vlastní životní zkušenosti: spisovatel byl v podobném ústavu na nucené léčbě v době nacistického teroru v roce 1944. Propašoval do ústavu papír a tajně psal jako o záchranu zdravého rozumu drobounkým písmem svůj mistrovský román. Z překladu Věry a Karla Houbových pro rozhlas upravil a účinkuje Pavel Soukup. Režie Vlado Rusko.Text vznikal v mecklenburském provinčním městě Strelitz, v nacistické léčebně pro alkoholiky a narkomany, kde byl autor na nucené léčbě. Falladovi se podařilo propašovat do ústavu sto listů linkovaného papíru a opatřil si pero a inkoust. Psal jako o záchranu zdravého rozumu - za 16 dní, od 6. do 21. září 1944, napsal kromě řady drobných povídek i celý román Pijan. Práce na literárním díle však pro Falladu neznamenala v ústavě jen záchranu, ale i smrtelné nebezpečí. Fallada musel své psaní maskovat: stránky papíru pokrýval svými řádky v třícentimetrových odstupech, písmem tak droboučkým, že se nedalo přečíst pouhým okem a vypadalo jako nesmyslná čmáranice tu a tam přerušovaná písmenkem. Když Fallada došel na poslední stránku, obrátil papír vzhůru nohama a psal dál, doprostřed třícentimetrových mezer. A když opět došel ke konci, obrátil papír podruhé. Ale ani tak se neodvážil napsat o ústavu plnou pravdu a posunul příběh kamsi do neurčitých časů výmarské republiky. Když se ve Falladově pozůstalosti našel tento balík počmáraného papíru, pokládali ho nejprve za nějakou podivnost, až při zkoumání lupou se ukázalo, že jde o souvislý text. Rozluštění a přepis trvalo měsíc. Přes obtížné podmínky vzniku je až k nevíře, že tato skvěle komponovaná kniha vznikla jako první náčrt, k němuž se autor nikdy nevrátil.

Gerber re-enlisted and was sent to Germany in 1920. In Berlin, he discovered a vibrant gay rights movement, which made him vow to advocate for the rights of gay men at home. He founded the Society for Human Rights, the first legally recognized US gay-rights organization, on December 10, 1924. When police caught wind of it, he and two members were arrested. He lost his job, went to court three times, and went bankrupt. Released, he moved to New York, disheartened. Later in life, he joined the DC chapter of the Mattachine Society, a gay-rights advocacy group founded by Harry Hay who had heard of Gerber⠙s group, leading him to found Mattachine. An Angel in Sodom is the first and long overdue biography of the founder of the first US gay rights organization.
