Po maturitě studoval na právnické fakultě, navštěvoval ale také přednášky na FF UK. Po válce práva sice dostudoval, ale nikdy do advokacie nenastoupil. Prošel mnoha zaměstnáními, ze kterých čerpal později náměty pro svá díla. Jeho díla jsou psána zvláštním jazykem - hospodskou řečí, kterou prolínají metafory a básnický jazyk. V roce 1963 se stal spisovatelem z povolání. V sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech nesměl publikovat. Začátkem 70. let byly Hrabalovy texty na indexu zakázaných knih, šířily se v samizdatech a opisech Tereza Bebarová (nar.1975) Tato herečka se narodila v Bohumíně v roce 1975. Už od školky vystupovala ve školních besídkách. Bylo tedy jasné, kam povedou její kroky v pozdějších letech. Vystudovala konzervatoř v Ostravě. Během studia této konzervatoře hrála v Divadle Petra Bezruče a v Divadle loutek. Po úspěšném vystdování získala angažmá v divadle Aréna a po té v Národním divadle moravskoslezském.
