Paříž, New York, Švýcarsko, zapadlý kout amerického venkova - to všechno jsou místa, která Irwin Shaw, jeden z nejlepších amerických prozaiků 20. století, mistrovsky zachytil ve své povídkové sbírce Láska v temné ulici. Věrně zobrazené prostředí však nebylo jeho jedinou doménou, vynikal především jako výborný vypravěč. Jako málokterý spisovatel dovedl spojit zvučný, mužný a někdy lehce ironický projev svých povídek s nevšedně jemným pochopením i těch nejniternějších pohnutek lidského chování. Shawův svět je v podstatě tragický, přestože on sám zdaleka není pesimista. V jeho civilních příbězích nejednou zazáří lidská něha, nesobeckost, obětavost a upřímný cit. Shaw obdivuje člověka a přes všechny výhrady věří v jeho morální sílu. Povídky dosahují po formální stránce vysoké úrovně, vynikají jak vtipnými dialogy, tak skvělou kresbou charakterů a Irwin Shaw v nich dokazuje, že je právem považován za mistra tohoto žánru.

Je typické, že jej neprve objevilo Národní divadlo a postupně uvádělo jeho díla, která však nedosáhla většího množství repríz /Člověk nikdy neví (1906), Živnost paní Warenové (1907), Motýl (1908)/; první velký úspěch zaznamenala hra Pygmalion (1913), která se stala oporou kmenového repertoáru NDa hrála se až do dvacátých let. Dalším velkým úspěchem byl Caesar a Kleopatra (1917). Ještě ve válečném období upoutával české prostředí svým odsudkem války a svou pacifistickou tendencí. Nové nastudování Živnosti paní Warenové je podstatně úspěšnější a i další hry G.B Shawa (Pekelník, Kateřina Veliká, Milionářka, Svatá Jana, Androkles a lev a další) , které mají na repertoáru už i další česká divadla (Vinohradské, Realistické, Komorní a i divadla v Brně aj.) přibližují jeho dílo skoro v jeho celistvosti Naše divadlo se tedy může pyšnit tím, že vycítilo velikost G.B.Shawa již v jeho prvních jevištních rozbězích. Nešlo mu přitom jen o jeho zábavnost, která zaručuje divácký úspěch; šlo mu o životní a světový názor dramatika, který byl blízký české povaze svým úsměvným skepticismem a sarkastickou kritičností.
