An illuminating history of the reform agenda in higher education. For well over one hundred years, people have been attempting to make American colleges and universities more efficient and more accountable. Indeed, Ethan Ris argues in Other Peopleâ ™s Colleges, the reform impulse is baked into American higher education, the result of generations of elite reformers who have called for sweeping changes in the sector and raised existential questions about its sustainability. When that reform is beneficial, offering major rewards for minor changes, colleges and universities know how to assimilate it. When it is hostile, attacking autonomy or values, they know how to resist it. The result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence.  In the early twentieth century, the â œacademic engineers,â a cadre of elite, external reformers from foundations, businesses, and government, worked to reshape and reorganize the vast base of the higher education pyramid. Their reform efforts were largely directed at the lower tiers of higher education, but those efforts fell short, despite the wealth and power of their backers, leaving a legacy of successful resistance that affects every college and university in the United States. Today, another coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and politicians is again demanding efficiency, accountability, and utility from American higher education. But, as Ris argues, top-down design is not destiny. Drawing on extensive and original archival research, Other Peopleâ ™s Colleges offers an account of higher education that sheds light on todayâ ™s reform agenda. Â

Shortlisted for the Orwell Prize 2016We all depend on the finance sector. We need it to store our money, manage our payments, finance housing stock, restore infrastructure, fund retirement and support new business. But these roles comprise only a tiny sliver of the sector s activity: the vast majority of lending is within the finance sector. So what is it all for? What is the purpose of this activity? And why is it so profitable?John Kay, a distinguished economist with wide experience of the financial sector, argues that the industry s perceived profitability is partly illusory, and partly an appropriation of wealth created elsewhere - of other people s money. The financial sector, he shows, has grown too large, detached itself from ordinary business and everyday life, and has become an industry that mostly trades with itself, talks to itself, and judges itself by reference to standards which it has itself generated. And the outside world has itself adopted those standards, bailing out financial institutions that have failed all of us through greed and mismanagement. We need finance, but today we have far too much of a good thing. In Other People s Money John Kay shows in his inimitable style what has gone wrong in the dark heart of finance.

A Penitent People - Harrison Perkins
A Penitent People: The Doctrine of RepentanceIn this refreshing exploration of a frequently misunderstood spiritual discipline, Harrison Perkins invites Christians to reconsider repentance not as a dreary obligation, but as a joyful gift of grace. With theological depth and pastoral sensitivity, Perkins shows how repentance is about freedomâ ”Christ freeing His people from sin s enslaving power. Drawing from Scripture and Reformed tradition, A Penitent People illuminates repentance as both personal posture and communal practice. Through thoughtful examinations of key biblical passages, Perkins demonstrates that genuine repentance flows from faith, propels us toward Christ, and transforms both individuals and churches. This book challenges common misconceptions, showing that repentance isn t about earning God s favor but experiencing the freedom Christ purchased. Rather than focusing on guilt, Perkins emphasizes how repentance allows believers to enjoy the â ˜twofold benefitâ ™ of Christâ ”justification and progressive sanctification. Perfect for pastors, students, and everyday Christians seeking to deepen their spiritual life, A Penitent People offers a biblical vision of repentance that liberates rather than burdensâ ”inviting readers to discover the sweet relief of turning from sin to embrace the goodness of God.

Huis Clos and Other Plays - Jean-Paul Sartre
These three plays, diverse in subject but thematically coherent, illuminate one of Sartre s major philosophical concerns: the struggle to live and act freely in a complex and constricting world. Lucifer and the Lord, Sartre s favourite among his plays, explores this theme in depth, dealing in the process with fundamental questions of faith and disillusionment; in Huis Clos - arguably Sartre s most important play - he contends that Hell is other people , and details the afterlife of three souls trapped together in locked room and the torments that they inflict on each other; while The Respectable Prostitute, set in the Deep South of America, is concerned with racism, subjugation and the demands of conscience.

The Sweetness of Life - Francoise Heritier
The number one bestseller in France and Italy, from Françoise Héritier, The Sweetness of Life is a beautiful and poetic list of the everyday reasons that make life worth livingIf you assume an average life expectancy of 85 years, and deduct the hours we spend daily on sleeping, shopping, eating, working, tending to our relationships and on everything else that is obligatory, then how much time is left for the average person to enjoy those activities that are the sweetness of life? For Françoise Héritier, it is those activities, those moments that make up pure sensuality, the actual experience of humanity. These are the moments we all cherish: wild laughter, coffee in the sun, the bliss of fresh autumn evenings, running in warm rain, long conversations at twilight, kisses on the back of the neck, the moment when all nature falls silent, those times when you know that someone likes you, is looking at you and listening to you, cooking a complicated dish, feeling agile and sprightly, getting back together with friends you haven t seen in ages, watching a craftsman at work, listening to other people. There s still so much else that I forget , says Héritier, and she goes on to list, with heart-warming and heart-breaking specificity, all that we so easily miss if we do not attend to the lightness and grace in the simple fact of existence, life s sweetness. What about you, what would you miss if all this had to disappear from your life forever? A series of perceptions, sensations, eddies, and happiness of writing that gives a real intensity to the existence ... a true wonder Laure Adler Françoise Héritier, an anthropologist, is Emeritus Professor at the College de France and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. She is the author of such highly successful works as Masculin/féminin and De la violence, translated into more than ten languages. Le Sel de la Vie (translated into English as The Sweetness of Life) is a French bestseller.

Life Before the War - Michael Alpert
In northern Britain and parts of Wales and Scotland, your life might well be dominated throughout the 1930s by unemployment, low wages, poor nutrition, ill health, and slum housing. But if you lived in the Midlands, London or the South-East, by the latter 1930s you would probably be enjoying a far better life, as you benefited from the spread of electric power, new factories and products, a greater variety of food, a huge private and public house-building programme and expansion of all sorts, much of it created by the sums spent on rearmament. For people living in prosperous areas, real wages rose substantially between 1936 and 1939, as was shown by their increased consumption of food and clothes. The latter 1930s were years of ever more widespread leisure pursuits, among them near-universal cinema-going, newspaper reading and, for many millions, holiday-making. A well-paid working man or office worker might even be able to buy a car. Even so, most working-class wages, especially for women, remained below those of the middle classes, and class differences were still clearly marked in housing, food, clothing, education, medical treatment, and purchasing power in general. Your views on religion, marriage, sex, and behaviour in general remained sharply defined and changed slowly, and only at the end of the decade could the beginnings of change be seen. At the same time the Second World War, which began on 3 September 1939, was the climax of a long period of increasing anxiety, during which the press, the wireless and the cinema newsreel brought foreign affairs more and more into your daily life. Using varied sources, including personal memories and daily life as pictured in newspapers and novels, Michael Alpert presents a broad picture of life for ordinary people in Britain nearly a century ago.

Everyday Life in the Ice Age - Paul Bahn, Elle Clifford
Everyday Life in the Ice Age is the first attempt to present a truly complete, balanced and realistic picture of life during the last Ice Age, with its many problems and challenges, while dispelling many of the myths and inaccuracies about our early ancestors. One of the most common questions asked by visitors to Europeâ ™s decorated caves is â ˜What was life like for these people?â ™ No previous book has ever managed to answer this question, and most studies of the period are aimed entirely at academics, tending to focus on tool-types rather than what the tools were used for. Women and children are almost invisible in these studies. The book examines all aspects of the lives of biologically modern humans in Europe from about 40,000 to 12,000 years ago, the period known as the Last Ice Age, a time of radical change in climate and environment. It explores how people were able to cope with and adapt to the often rapid alterations in their circumstances.Elle Cliffordâ ™s background in Social Psychology brings important insights into aspects of the past which are never normally discussed â “ domestic and family life, pregnancy and child-rearing, and care of the sick and elderly. The book is aimed not only at students and specialists, but also and especially the interested public, for whom the most interesting questions are: How were they like us? and what behaviours do we share?

Culture and Anarchy and Other Selected Prose - Matthew Arnold
One has often wondered whether upon the whole earth there is anything so unintelligent, so unapt to perceive how the world is really going, as an ordinary young Englishman of our upper class. Poet, education reformer, social theorist and passionate critic of Victorian England, Matthew Arnold condemned an industrial society in bondage to machinery and argued instead that the wonder and joy of culture - in particular the sweetness and light of classical civilization - were essential to human life. The other pieces here, on literary criticism, schools, France, journalism and democracy, form a powerful call to arms from a writer who believed that the English needed to be taught not what to think, but how to think. Edited with an introduction by P. J. Keating.

Revealing a little-known part of North American history, this lively guide tells the fascinating tale of the settlement of the St. Lawrence Valley. It also tells of the Montreal and Quebec-based explorers and traders who traveled, mapped, and inhabited a very large part of North America, and “embrothered the peoples” they met, as Jack Kerouac wrote.Connecting everyday life to the events that emerged as historical turning points in the life of a people, this book sheds new light on Quebec’s 450-year history––and on the historical forces that lie behind its two recent efforts to gain independence.
