Drawing political theory and architectural history into conversation, Vanessa Grossman probes the shifting but enduring alliance between modern architecture and the PCF in the aftermath of the political crisis of 1958, prompted by the Algerian War of Independence and Charles de Gaulle’s rise to power.  Focusing on key episodes, Grossman discusses the work of Renée Gailhoustet (a rare female architect of her generation), Jean Renaudie, and members of the Atelier d’urbanisme et d’architecture (AUA), in collaboration with architectural elders such as Jean Prouvé and Oscar Niemeyer, who self-exiled to France, and in relation to contemporary Marxist thinkers such as philosophers Louis Althusser and Henri Lefebvre. Grossman exposes how communist politics and architectural modernism were mutually reinforcing ideologies that circulated in France across national and international networks of architects, urban planners, civil servants, intellectuals, activists, and politicians. Offering a new understanding of the postwar realization that architecture, particularly housing, could be employed as a political tool, this highly original book reveals the meaningful dialogue between French communism and architectural modernism.

Audiokniha: Původní LP album 1218 0434 "Povídky Šimka a Grossmanna" vydal Supraphon v roce 1978 - některé písně a povídky již digitálně vyšly na různých CD albech, ale LP v původní podobě a sestavě vychází poprvé i s původním komentářem Miloslava Šimka: Dobrý den, vážená přátelé! Upřímně Vás vítám nad deskou povídek Šimka a Grossmanna, které jsme s Jirkou Grossmannem psali nejprve pro klub Olympik ve Spálené ulici, a později pak pro divadlo Semafor. Nejvíce jsme jich četli v Návštěvních dnech, což byly zprvu vlastně literárně hudební večery. Dobře je pamatují i písničkáři Mirek Paleček a Michael Janík, kteří v těchto pořadech vystupovali jako hosté. Proto jsem je pozval i na veřejnou nahrávku této desky, aby nám atmosféru někdejších Návštěvních dnů alespoň trochu přiblížili. A nyní mi dovolte několik slov k povídkám, zejména k těm, které na desce předčítám. Jejich psaní bylo jistě ovlivněno i tím, že já jsem nějakou dobu učil a Jirka se asi dvakrát přišel podívat do mých hodin, převlečen za inspektora. Když jsem začal učit na devítileté střední škole v Praze Střešovicích, byla mi svěřena kromě jiných předmětů i výuka hudební výchovy. Kdo mě slyšel zpívat, ví, že to byl zločin spáchaný na mně i dětech. Když se to Jirka dozvěděl, smál se – podle mě až zbytečně dlouho a nahlas. Ale všechno zlé je k něčemu dobré. Díky tomu, že jsem vyučoval hudební výchově, vznikla povídka „Výchovný koncert“. Jinou událost školního života, na kterou jistě nelze zapomenout a na kterou jsme pochopitelně nezapomněli ani my s Jirkou, je bezesporu branné cvičení, jak se ostatně jmenuje i další příběh. Jednou, když Jirka ležel v nemocnici na Karlově náměstí – to už na něj útočila nemoc – jsme v pokojíku, který nám vyhradil pan primář, sepsali povídku „Jak jsem onemocněl“. Na ní je vidět Jirkův obrovský elán. Moc jsem to u něho obdivoval, ani v době nemoci neztrácel smysl pro humor. Jednou z našich nejpopulárnějších povídek v době, kdy jsme ještě hráli v klubu Olympik, byla povídka nazvaná „Můj první mejdan“. Museli jsme ji číst, kdekoliv jsme se objevili, diváci si nám o ni psali, sami si ji opisovali. Po letech na ni vzpomínal jeden mladík na jakési besedě a ptal se nás, jestli také někdy popíšeme studentský večírek. A my tenkrát slíbili, že se o to pokusíme. „Maturitní večírek“ patří mezi poslední povídky, které jsme s Jiřím Grossmannem napsali. A jestliže na této desce je na konci zařazena naopak jedna z našich prvních povídek „Quido shání nevěstu“, je to proto, že na počátky své spolupráce s Jirkou vzpomínám snad nejraději. Byli jsme bezesporu ovlivněni němými groteskami, které jsme milovali a ochotně chodili všude tam, kde se zrovna promítaly. Proto i v „Quidovi“ do sebe lidi hodně strkají, ba i házejí po sobě šlehačkou. Váš Miloslav Šimek
