Bohužel, jak naznačuje současný vývoj, Orwellova a Huxleyho vize se podivně proplétají. I dnes si nikdo nemůže být jist, kým, proč a jak bude odposloucháván, analyzován, zneužit, zmanipulován, převychováván či - prozatím jen společensky -"vypařen". Není náhodou, že Orwellovu knihu, napsanou v roce 1948, zařadil časopis Time mezi sto nejvlivnějších knih vydaných od roku 1923. Vizionářský román v roce 1984 zfilmoval režisér Michael Radford s Johnem Hurtem v hlavní roli a s hudbou od skupiny Eurythmics. Snímek byl vyhlášen nejlepším britským filmem sezony.
