Román podáva príbeh stroskotanca Prendicka, ktorého pred istou smrťou zachráni čln doktora Moreaua. Hoci román patrí medzi rané diela tohto klasika sci-fi literatúry, nesie významné morálne a filozofické posolstvo. Predovšetkým preto, že skúma hranice medzi morálnym a nemorálnym konaním človeka. Doktor Moreau sa utiahne na pustý ostrov, aby robil pokusy na zvieratách, pri ktorých ich nevýslovne mučí, ale svoje konanie ospravedlňuje vyšším záujmom - záujmom vedeckého poznania. Takýmto počínaním sa stáva pre svoje skonštruované stvorenia akýmsi "Bohom", čo otvára pole premýšľaniu nad vzťahom moci a jej správneho používania či zneužívania. V neposlednom rade sa otvára analógia so súčasnosťou, keď v rámci genetického inžinierstva a klonovania existuje reálna možnosť robiť obdobné pokusy, hoci v inom zmysle, než ako zamýšľal Wells. Aj to nastavuje určité kritické zrkadlo súčasnej civilizácii a vede ako inštitúcii, aby si ľudstvo určilo hranice medzi "normálnym" vedeckým skúmaním a takým, kde by sa nové poznatky mohli zneužiť alebo vymknúť spod kontroly vedcov. Jeden z nejpůsobivějších románů sci-fi. Tohle je moment, kdy se začalo odvíjet klubko podivuhodných událostí: slavnostní večeře v domě bohatého vynálezce posedlého svými výzkumy.
