Ten obsahuje devět příběhů (pět z nich je nyní do češtiny přeloženo poprvé), které nás znovu uvádějí do příznačně dahlovského světa - světa vybudovaného na tenké, přeludné hranici mezi možným a neskutečným, realistickým a fantastickým, očekávaným a překvapivým či (zvláště v poslední povídce) pravdivým a fiktivním. Moment znejistění - mrazivě příjemného - poopravuje vždy naši interpretaci, naši ustálenou představu světa. "Postiženými", těmi, kdo se v příběhu setkávají s čímsi, co otřese jejich jistotami, jsou buď vypravěči (jako v případě vikáře Adama, jehož zpráva se stává stále více nespolehlivou, až vposledku překračuje práh příčetného), nebo "zvnějšku" nahlížené postavy (jako je Klausner, který sestavením svého přístroje otevře nechtěně jakousi Pandořinu skříňku zvuků). - V každém případě však pohyb nečekanosti staví na tiché dohodě, kterou uzavírá Dahl s těmi, kdo se nechávají okouzlovat (obluzovat) jeho vyprávěním, nenápadným, spikleneckým mrknutím autora směrem ke čtenáři.Z angličtiny přeložili Richard Müller a Josef Línek.
