Jeden ze základních textů řecké filosofie. Co je vlastně skutečné? Jednotlivé nebo obecné? Platón tvrdil, že skutečnost přísluší pouze obecným idejím a jednotlivosti jsou jen nedokonalé z nich odvozené napodobeniny. Podle Aristotela, který s Platónem nesouhlasí, obecné není ideální a je jen v jiném světě jsoucí předobraz. Když vypovídáme o obecném, je to možné jen pomocí jednotlivostí, které existují v prostoru a v čase. Aristotelés nešel tak daleko jako myslitelé pozdního středověku - nominalisté, kteří tvrdili, že obecné pojmy jsou výlučně v našich hlavách a jsou získány na základě určité podobnosti abstrakcí z jednotlivostí. Aristotelés(384-322)byl nejvýznamnější z Platónových žáků, pocházel ze Stageiry v Makedónii. Téměř dvacet let strávil v Akadémii, z které po Platónově smrti odešel do Malé Asie. Do Athén se vrátil v r. 336, aby zde v Lykeiu založil filosofickou školu. Po smrti Alexandra byl obviněn z bezbožnosti, a tak se uchýlil do vyhnanství na Euboiu, kde onemocněl a zemřel. Etika Eudémova bývá společně s Etikou Níkomachovou a Velkou etikou (Magna Moralia) řazena mezi Aristotelovy etické spisy. Zatímco Etika Níkomachova si své místo v dějinách filosofie již právem zasloužila a vystupuje nad zbylé dva spisy jako dílo mladší a stěžejní, Etika Eudémova neprávem často zůstává v pozadí jako spis starší či pouze přípravný, z něhož bylo později vyňato několik knih pro Etiku Níkomachovu. V našem prostředí se upozadění tohoto díla projevuje i v absenci českých překladů. Na rozdíl od spisu Magna Moralia přitom nemůžeme jakkoli pochybovat o Aristotelově autorství tohoto jedinečného díla. I když se přikloníme k většinovému názoru, že jde o spis, který byl časem překonán, zůstává cenný nejen jako svědectví o vývoji Aristotelova myšlení. Může totiž představovat i alternativní výklad autorovy nauky o ctnosti. Navzdory množství dochovaných materiálů a nejrůznějších komentářů zůstává Aristotelova etika předmětem stále trvajících sporů. Téma ctnosti ve spojitosti s Aristotelovými etickými myšlenkami je v 21. století stále živě diskutováno. Nejuniverzálnější duch antiky Aristotelés vynikal kromě originality myšlení i nesmírnou tvůrčí potencí. Za svůj život napsal nesčíslné množství odborných i vzdělávacích spisů a pojednání, z nichž se dochovala pouze část; i ta však čítá 47 titulů. Patří k nim též Athénská ústava, ač právě u ní mnozí badatelé dodnes pochybují o Aristotelově skutečném autorství. Její objev v roce 1890 a následující knižní vydání v Londýně vyvolaly senzaci a řetězovou reakci překladatelů, mezi něž se zařadil pohotově i český překlad Josefa Pražáka v roce 1900. Nerozsáhlý spisek popisuje vývoj a uspořádání athénské společnosti od mytických počátků až po demokratickou reformu a ústavní zřízení athénské obce v 2. pol. 4. století př. Kr. spolu s podrobným vykreslením úřednického aparátu a soudnictví. Pro poznání počátků demokracie jako systému správy státu má toto dílko mimořádnou poznatkovou hodnotu, umocněnou jeho autentičností. Napsal-li je Aristotelés či někdo jiný, není z hlediska jeho obsahu podstatné, protože samo o sobě shrnuje takovou sumu informací o historii starověkých Athén a potažmo Řecka, která je řadí k nejdůležitějším odkazům antického písemnictví. Od doby prvního českého vydání se vynořily z hlubin archivů další zlomky textů, které původní text významně doplnily. Nový překlad prof. Kniha se na vybraných tématech myšlení 10. a 11. století věnuje důležitosti peripatetické tradice v rámci tehdejšího (nejen) filosofického dialogu. Postupně se věnuje konceptu sedmi svobodných umění a snaze o začlenění filosofie do tohoto konceptu, otázce dělení věd (filosofie), rozvoji dialektiky (logiky) a užívání dialektických postupů v nejrůznějších oblastech lidských teoretických aktivit této doby, filosofii jazyka (sémantice), opětovně především se zřetelem na nepřehlédnutelnou roli Aristotelových spisů (především Kategorií, ale také důležitost díla O vyjadřování), sporu o univerzálie, především pak tzv. vokalismu, ovšem stranou pozornosti nezůstávají ani teologické přesahy raně nominalistických koncepcí, které vedly např. ke sporu o výklad trojjedinosti Boha. Na závěr je řešen problém, který je na jedné straně inspirován Aristotelovým pojednáním O vyjadřování, zároveň je v něm bytostně přítomná rovněž náboženská pravda – výklad omnipotence boží. Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) byl německo-americký politický filosof. Jeho dílo Řád a dějiny mělo být ojedinělým příspěvkem k filosofii dějin. Tématem byl řád v lidské duši, ve společnosti a v dějinách a metodou mělo být zkoumání symbolů tohoto řádu, jak se historicky proměňovaly od starověkých orientálních civilizací po současnost. Voegelin však tento projekt záhy přerušil, protože pokládal za nutné revidovat jeho teoretická východiska; posledním svazkem uskutečňujícím původní rozvrh se tak stal svazek věnovaný Platónovi a Aristotelovi. Ten ukazuje filosofii (právě v její vrcholné fázi) jako symbolickou formu, jíž duše artikuluje pohyby kosmu a společnosti ? a především svůj vlastní pohyb mezi řádem a neuspořádaností, pravdou a nepravdou, spravedlností a nespravedlností, vzestupem a upadáním, láskou k moudrosti a láskou ke zdání a vposled mezi životem a smrtí. Interpretace celku Aristotelovy teoretické filosofie, jak ji Pierre Aubenque podává v tomto svazku, stojí na aporetičnosti řečového bytí na jedné a dokonalého bytí na druhé straně. V řeči se bytí dává jako vůbec nejobecnější slovo, a pokud má tedy řeč jakýkoli zřetelný smysl, mělo by mít – také a především – vyhraněný smysl slovo „bytí“; pokud ale nemáme skončit ve slepé uličce reprezentované Parmenidem či megariky, nemůžeme mu vyhraněný smysl přisoudit. Dokonalé bytí, představované hvězdami a ještě důrazněji nehybným hybatelem, pak je nutným úběžníkem veškerých úvah o bytí ve sféře pohybu a změny – ale současně je ve své nehybnosti a samostatnosti nemyslitelné, neboť i lidské myšlení je pohyb. Kniha představuje Aristotelovo pojetí člověka jako výraz přesvědčení, že určující podobou skutečnosti jsou konkrétní živé bytosti. Rozdíly mezi těmito bytostmi jsou dány různými druhy činností, které jsou té či oné živé bytosti vlastní a které se promítají přímo do její tělesné stavby. Lidská anatomie je z tohoto hlediska výrazem schopnosti myslet i možností tuto schopnost realizovat. Aristotelův výklad lidské existence má proto dvě neoddělitelné stránky: tematizaci účelu tělesných částí a výklad jejich látkové konstituce. Jednající člověk tak není jen svébytná osoba, odpovídající pouze za své vlastní činy, nýbrž nese faktickou odpovědnost i za to, co ve své kultuře a společnosti přebírá.
