Jeden z nejproslulejších románů 20. století, jímž se Albert Camus stal duchovním otcem celé jedné poválečné generace, byl bezprostředně po svém vydání v r. 1942 označen vichystickou kritikou jako "ochablost ducha" a "degenerace lidství". Ve skutečnosti je příběh Meursaulta, náhodného vraha odsouzeného k smrti, protože odmítá přijmout roli v společenských hrách, působivou oslavou člověka, a to člověka revoltujícího. Podle vlastní Camusovy interpretace "cizinec" až do konce odmítá lhát a bez jediného náznaku hrdinského chování souhlasí s tím, že zemře pro pravdu, aniž by ji "těm druhým" vnucoval. Audiokniha:,Na konci srpna 1942 si Albert Camus napsal do svého deníku: "Mor. Nemůžu se z toho dostat. Příliš mnoho "náhod" při psaní. Je třeba se striktně držet myšlenky. Cizinec zpodobuje obnaženost člověka tváří v tvář absurditě. Mor hlubinnou rovnocennost individuálních hledisek tváří v tvář téže absurditě. Je to pokrok, který bude zpřesněn v dalších dílech. Mor však mimo to dokazuje, že absurdita ničemu neučí. To je definitivní pokrok". Zdá se, že několik útržkovitých poznámek může být klíčem ke čtení románu, který Camus vydal až pět let poté, v roce 1947. Jeho děj zasadil do alžírského města Oran. Znal ho důvěrně ze svých pobytů a byla mu známá i historie zdejší cholerové epidemie. Ta zabila v roce 1849 většinu obyvatel města. Camus přesadil děj do roku 1940, i to možná přispělo k tomu, že román byl často vykládán jako zpodobnění vichistického kolaborantského režimu a rezistence proti němu. Při podrobnějším studiu Camusova díla, zvláště filosofických pojednání Mýtus o Sysifovi a Člověk revoltující, však nutně vystane pochybnost, není-li tento výklad příliš zjednodušující. Styl románu připomíná kroniku a strohost jazyka, nejednoznačnost významů vět upomíná zase na Kafkův Proces. Vypravěčem příběhu je lékař Bernard Rieux.Ten se jako první setkává s případy onemocnění morem, ale jeho varování nikdo nebere vážně. Teprve když mor propukne v plné síle, městská rada město hermeticky uzavře. Od této chvíle se Oran stává územím karantény, nikdo nesmí ven a nikdo nesmí dovnitř. Doktor Rieux a skupina jemu blízkých, velmi rozmanitých lidí začíná svůj boj proti moru. Epidemie zatím mění celou společnost, tváří tvář smrti padají masky, jedni zatracují boha, druzí ho nacházejí, jedni rabují, další pomáhají. Strohý, téměř reportážní autorův styl líčí bez emocí událost za událostí. V nehrdinských hrdinech románu a jejich neokázalých postojích lze spatřit podoby Camusova člověka revoltujícího, který teprve tváří v tvář smrti, na prahu katastrofy, utvrzuje smysl života. V roce 1943 v Paříži si Camus poznamenává do deníku: "Pro člověka není svobody, dokud nepřekoná svůj strach ze smrti. Ne však sebevraždou. Kvůli jeho překonání se nesmí vzdát sebe." I tato slova mohou být dalším klíčem ke čtení románu. Každopádně je fascinující pomyšlení, že Camus vydal toto dílo v poválečné atmosféře sympatií francouzské levice ke komunismu, v době literatury plné patetického hrdinství, do níž nepatetičtí Camusovy hrdinové, plni existenciálních pochyb vůbec nezapadali. Vidí snad pronikavěji do budoucnosti? Mezi fyzickou a psychickou infekcí, mezi nemocí a nakažlivou ideologií není zásadní rozdíl. "Mor" je metaforou pro jakýkoli stav absurdního utrpení, od ohrožení zdraví až po znásilňující ideologii, politické represe, okupaci a válku. Všichni víme, že takové nákazy se občas objeví, ale nějak se nám nechce uvěřit, když se nás některá bezprostředně týká. Nedávno zesnulý fotograf František Kressa (1951-2019) představuje v 6. díle série "Normalizační Brno" moravskou metropoli v roce 1989, kdy se zrhoutil komunistický režim. Kressa jako fotograf Brněnského Večerníku trávil všechen pracovní i volný čas v ulicích během listopadu a prosince 1989, kdy Brno zažilo největší vlnu protestů ve své historii. Kressa svými fotografiemi ukazuje vše, co sametové revoluci předcházelo, jak si režim kupoval lidi zábavou, přestože husákovskému režimu nevěřil už skoro nikdo. Jednu kapitolu Kressa věnoval také Frantovi Kocourkovi, jehož zábava vytrhávala lidi z normalizačního bezčasí, další fenoménu Husákových dětí, které tvoří to nejlepší, co v době politického temna vzniklo.
