New Surrealism - Robert Zeller
New Surrealism: The Uncanny in Contemporary Painting by Robert Zeller offers a sweeping exposition of both historical Surrealism and its legacy in the world of contemporary art. It demonstrates the many ways in which the most significant art movement of the last century continues to be relevant today, featuring an international selection of contemporary artists whose compositions and studio practice reveal its influence. There are many modalities of historical Surrealism that still maintain contemporary currency: presenting the familiar as unfamiliar and uncanny, the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated imagery, the use of absurdity to critique political or social issues, and the use of erotic imagery in an irrational, non-linear context. Not all the artists brought together in this book self-identify as Surrealist, per se, but each uses some variation of Surrealism in a personal manner. The book begins with a study of the origins, leadership, participating artists, and major milestones of historical Surrealism. Zeller chronicles the movement starting at the end of World War I and the birth of Dada. The most important players and events emerge throughout the timeline of events—including World War II, and such notable artists as Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Leonora Carrington, and many others—up until the death of its leader Andre Breton in 1966. Zeller then explores how elements of New Surrealism are being put into practice in the contemporary art world. Section Two offers a survey of 29 contemporary artists who engage in New Surrealism’s seemingly unlimited variations of the movement’s original themes, including Rosa Loy, Glenn Brown, and Arghavan Khosravi.Section Three features 14 artists, including important contemporary artists such as Inka Essenhigh, Ginny Casey and Anna Weyant, who speak to Surrealism’s influence on their studio practice, detailing in their own words how they create a composition from start to finish.

Surrealists in New York - Charles Darwent
An absorbing group biography revealing how exiles from war-torn France brought Surrealism to America, helping to shift the centre of the art world from Paris to New York and spark the movement that became Abstract Expressionism. In 1957 the American artist Robert Motherwell made an unexpected claim: ‘I have only known two painting milieus well … the Parisian Surrealists, with whom I began painting seriously in New York in 1940, and the native movement that has come to be known as “abstract expressionism”, but which genetically would have been more properly called “abstract surrealism”.’ Motherwell’s bold assertion, that Abstract Expressionism was neither new nor local, but born of a brief liaison between America and France, verged on the controversial. Surrealists in New York tells the story of this ‘liaison’ and the European exiles who bought Surrealism with them – an artistic exchange between the Old World and the New – centring on taciturn printmaker Stanley William Hayter and the legendary Atelier 17 print studio he founded. Here artists’ experiments literally pushed the boundaries of modern art. It was in Hayter’s studio that Jackson Pollock found the balance of freedom and control that would culminate in his distinctive drip paintings. The impact of Max Ernst, André Masson, Louise Bourgeois and other noted émigrés on the work of Motherwell, Pollock, Mark Rothko and the American avant-garde has for too long been quietly written out of art history. Drawing on first-hand documents, interviews and archive materials, Charles Darwent brings to life the events and personalities from this crucial encounter. In so doing, he reveals a fascinating new perspective on the history of the art of the twentieth century.

Frida Kahlo. 40th Ed. - Luis-Martín Lozano
Among the women artists who have transcended art history, none had a meteoric rise quite like Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Her unmistakable face, depicted in over fifty extraordinary self-portraits, has been admired by generations; along with hundreds of photographs taken by notable artists such as Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Martin Munkacsi, they made Frida Kahlo an iconic image of 20th century art. After an accident in her early youth, Frida became a painter of her own free will. Her marriage to Diego Rivera in 1929 placed her at the forefront of an artistic scene not only in the cultural Renaissance of Mexico, but also in the United States. Her work garnered praise from the poet Andre Breton, who added the Mexican painter to the ranks of international surrealism and exhibited her work in Paris in 1939 to the admiration of Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp. We access the intimacy of Frida's affections and passions through a selection of drawings, pages from her personal diary, and an extensive illustrated biography featuring photos of Frida, Diego, and the Casa Azul, Frida's home and the center of her universe. This book allows readers to admire Frida Kahlo's paintings like never before, including unprecedented detail shots and famous photographs. It presents pieces in private collections and reproduces works that were previously lost or have not been exhibited for more than 80 years.

101 Surrealists - Desmond Morris
A concise compendium of the lives and work of the 101 most significant Surrealists by one of the last surviving members of the movement, bestselling author and artist Desmond Morris, who knew several of the key participants personally. 2024 marks the centenary of Surrealism, one of the most influential artistic movements of the modern era. In 1924, André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to arms which established Surrealism as a literary and artistic movement.Rather than attempting to analyse the work of the Surrealists, bestselling author and Surrealist artist Desmond Morris focuses on them as remarkable individuals. What were their personalities, their predilections, their character strengths and flaws? Did they enjoy a social life or were they loners? Were they bold eccentrics or timid recluses? Featuring 101 artists, from the famous – Duchamp, Dali, Magritte, Miro, Carrington, Kahlo, Picabia, Ernst and others – to the neglected – Mesens, Rimmington, Sage, Fini, Bellmer, Colquhoun and Gonzalez – this book draws on the author’s personal knowledge of the Surrealists, capturing in concise form their life histories, idiosyncrasies and often-complex love lives. Surrealism was both spectacular and international, shaped by the darkest, most irrational workings of the unconscious.Shocking, witty and always entertaining, Morris's potted summaries and punchy anecdotes illuminate striking variations in artistic approach to the Surrealist philosophy, both in the artists’ works and lives. A complement to Morris's earlier biographical volumes, 101 Surrealists encapsulates each artist in new and abridged texts that convey with immediacy the impact and significance of each of the 101 artists featured.

Jaromír Funke - Between Construction and Emotion - Antonín Dufek
The first large-scale monograph on this internationally renowned photographer. Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) was a innovator of modern photography, just like Jaroslav Rössler, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Aleksander Rodchenko, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston, to name but a few. Like them, Funke set out (in 1922) on the road towards abstraction, which would eventually lead him to his own particular "ism” - photogenism. Funke also responded to Cubism and created exemplary works of the New Objectivity and Constructivism, but he stood closest to Bauhaus. During the 1920s, he was one of the first to adopt irrational approaches such as Poetism and Surrealism. In the second half of the 1930s, Funke established his "emotional photography” on the basis of Breton's notion of the magic encounter. He was a typical universally educated intellectual of his era. This book focuses primarily on the ideas that shaped and transformed Funke's work, while placing it within the context of European avant-garde photography and culture, of which he was a pioneer. The book was prepared in cooperation with Jaromír Funke's daughter Miloslava Rupešová.

Jaroslav J. Králík - Jan Králík
Though as a painter and printmaker Jaroslav Králík (1924-1999) displayed a mastery of a unique an innovative style, his oeuvre has somehow remained relatively unknown to the wider public. A symbolic repayment of this debt is the extensive publication prepared by the artist's son, forming a dignified confirmation of Králík's definitive place among Czech artists of the later 20th century. Among his fellow students at the Prague Academy in the atelier of Emil Filla were, for instance, Čestmír Kafka and the sisters Jitka and Květa Válová, while forming personal links later in his career with František Tichý or Kamil Lhoták. The range of his creative interests was truly broad, from monumental realisations for architecture or public spaces (tapestries, art protis, stained glass) to intimate sketches, prints, or collages, most notably working with quotations from the paintings of the old masters, most often Hieronymus Bosch, Matthias Grünewald, Pieter Bruegel, Albrecht Dürer, Piero della Francesco or Sandro Botticelli; no less fascinating for him was the aesthetic of handwritten or printed texts. Králík's unique artistic language, with its echoes of metaphysical painting, Surrealism, or Symbolism, opens a wide space for deeper cosmological questions along with reflections on the world around us and humanity's role within it.

Of Mice and Mooshaber - Ladislav Fuks
Ladislav Fuks is an outstanding Czech writer, whose works primarily consist of psychological fiction focusing on the themes of anxiety and life in totalitarian systems. He is well known for his short fiction treating the theme of holocaust, specifically for his works The Cremator (Spalovač mrtvol), which was filmed in 1969, and Mr. Theodore Mundstock (Pan Theodor Mundstock). Natalia Mooshabr's Mice (Myši Natálie Mooshabrové) is his first novel, in which he abandoned the theme of the holocaust moving on to the horror genre. The story takes place in an unspecified country whose ruler was overthrown and replaced by a dictator. The main protagonist, Mrs Mooshabr, is an old widow whose husband was a coachman in a brewery. Her life spins around her work (she is a caretaker for difficult children), her own ungrateful children and her fear of "mice", which she tries to catch in traps. Through the use of mystery and insinuations, Fuks brings the story to a surprising, tragic ending, revealing the evil through the souls of some of his characters. He employs the grotesque, fantastic surrealism to affect the reader, using negative and exaggerated elements to unveil reality. This work was written before the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, but it was not published until 1970.

Jaromír Funke - Avantgardní fotograf - Vladimír Birgus
Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) patří k nejvýznamnějším osobnostem české i světové fotografické avantgardy. Jaromír Funke Avant-Garde Photographer Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) is one of the most important figures of Avant-garde photography amongst the Czechs and also internationally. His works are in collections of important art institutions ranging from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris all the way to the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. In recent years he has also appeared in all the serious histories and encyclopaedias of photography. But it has taken a long time to acknowledge Funke's importance. Our exhibition focuses on his Avant-garde photographs, which in a distinctive and often highly forward-looking way, elaborate the impetuses of Cubism, abstract art, New Objectivity, Constructivism, and Surrealism.

Jan Švankmajer
Although the art and films of Jan Švankmajer enjoy wide international recognition today, ranking him among the most original artists of the last decades, many aspects of his life and work have remained unexplored. Nor has any book yet tried to systematically and comprehensively mark out the path of the formation and development in the work of this film-maker, artist, experimenter, poet and 'militant Surrealist' and thus show how the different sides converse with each other. The present book is the most comprehensive monograph on Jan Švankmajer so far, it describes with greater depth and precision aspects of his life and work and it invites the reader to dive into a wonderfully rich and coherent, distinctive and unique universe. The essays emphasise and illuminate characteristic attributes of Švankmajer's work - puppet theatre, Mannerism, Surrealism, collaboration with Eva Švankmajerová, his own film idiom, and also comparatively little known elements such as obsessional passion for collecting, first formative years and experiences; i.e. the book deals with the periods that have not yet been much studied and which make easier to understand Švankmajer's later creative evolution. The essays are alternated with chronologically conceived biographical study which introduces and comments individual works (theatre and puppet theatre productions, scenography, drawings, assemblages, films, objects, poems), draws attention to the various artistic and intellectual events, key meetings, influences, obsessions, ideas and visions, attitudes that may have contributed to the formation of the artist's unique and specific imagination. The authors of the book not only have a deep knowledge of the work of Jan Švankmajer but share with him a kindred vision of the world. Their comprehensive reflection is complemented by anthology of Švankmajer's texts, a detailed filmography

Dalí. BABY SUMO - Hans Werner Holzwarth
One of the titans of modern painting, Salvador Dalí is the quintessential surrealist but also a performer, designer, and visionary. This publication presents his work in unprecedented size and detail, accompanied by a chronology following his path from Catalonia through Paris to Hollywood and back, with photos, sketches, and magazine pages.Collector’s edition of 10,000 numbered copies The art and life of Salvador Dalí Salvador Dalí has become synonymous with Surrealism. His soft watches, burning giraffes, and lobster telephones are like a natural language of dreams. But there are many more surprises hidden in his work. Dalí was driven by a willingness to engage with the world: in his exploration of the Catalonian landscape or his reaction to the shock of the atom bomb with paintings whose elements hover side by side like the particles in atoms. He drafted his own “paranoiac-critical method,” explored optical illusions, double images, and stereoscopic paintings, invented the “surrealist object functioning symbolically,” created gorgeous backdrops for his own ballets, and staged himself as a mustache-wielding genius in photographic collaborations. Himself “painting like an angel,” as critics always admitted, in his later years he turned to the inspiration of classical art, updating and subverting Renaissance imagery in large celestial visions, or his final more private homages to Michelangelo and Velázquez. This sweeping overview combines two volumes: a Baby-SUMO-sized book with illustrations of Dalí’s key works in a size and detail never before seen in print, showing every touch of the artist’s exquisite brush. This is accompanied by a chronology volume of year-by-year texts, written by Montse Aguer and Carme Ruiz from the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí in the artist’s hometown of Figueres. Reflecting the latest research, they tell the story of art and artist with many quotes from his own writings, letters, and contemporary reviews, illustrated by rare and iconic portrait shots, magazine articles, sketches and book illustrations, as well as additional works in different media. We meet the young Dalí as a precocious but unruly talent, who makes friends with the Catalan avant-garde, becoming inseparable with the poet Federico Garcia Lorca. We follow him on his first visit of Paris, to a shy meeting in Picasso’s studio, before in 1929 he becomes known in select circles for his first film with Luis Buñuel. Soon his paintings scandalize not just the bourgeoisie, but hardboiled surrealist avant-gardists with soiled underpants and idols of masturbation. In the same eventful year, Dalí meets his muse Gala, soon inseparable from his own life and vision. We see them moving to America where he becomes a public figure in the media and on society pages, collaborating on theater and fashion projects, growing his inspirational mustache, working in Hollywood with Hitchcock and Disney. We see them return to Spain after the War where they hold court and the artist builds his own legacy in the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueres. Thirty-five years after his death he still continues to engage and surprise; and forty years after his first TASCHEN monograph, here is a fresh celebration on a grand scale of this titan of modern painting.Collector’s edition of 10,000 numbered copies The editor Hans Werner Holzwarth is a book designer and editor specializing in contemporary art and photography.
