The Collected Early Poems of Ezra Pound contains the complete text, the poet's first six books, their title pages in facsimile (A Lume Spento, 1908; A Quinzaine for This Yule, 1908; Personae, 1909; Exultations, 1909; Canzoni, 1911; Ripostes, 1912), and the long poem Redondillas (1911), for many years available only in a rare limited edition. There are, in addition, twenty-five poems originally published in periodicals but not previously collected, as well as thirty-eight others drawn from miscellaneous manuscripts. Ezra Pound's 1926 collection, entitled Personae after his earlier volume of that name, was his personal choice of all the poems he wished to keep in print other than some translations and his Cantos. It was intended to be the definitive collection of his shorter poems, and so it should remain. Yet even the discarded works of a great poet are of value and interest to students and devotees. Věznitel Frederick Clegg je psychopatický sexuální deviant, který si díky výhře v loterii může dovolit přestat pracovat a „starat se“ jen o svou zajatkyni. Takto realizuje svou touhu po vztahu s krásnou ženou a po manželství, které by mu otevřelo dveře do bohatšího a kultivovanějšího světa. Clegg je v podstatě mírný, nenásilný člověk, který ale nechápe, že plnohodnotný lidský vztah může vzniknout a rozvíjet se jen ze svobodného rozhodnutí. Miranda, studentka výtvarných umění a nadaná kreslířka, Clegga intelektuálně i osobnostně výrazně převyšuje. Je si toho vědoma a dokáže jím obratně manipulovat. Tragické vyústění své situace však odvrátit nedokáže. O autorovi John Fowles (1926-2005) je klasikem anglické postmoderní literatury. Do tohoto žánru zasáhl již svým prvním dílem Sběratel, kterým si okamžitě získal uznání jako výjimečně novátorský spisovatel s ohromující sílou imaginace a nebývalou schopností vtáhnout čtenáře do svých děl tak, aby se stali jejich součástí. Následovala další světově uznávaná díla: Mág, Francouzova milenka a jiné. Ožení se s nesprávnou ženou a jeho jediné milostné vzplanutí zhatí univerzitní pletichy. Prožije klidný, nenápadný život a kolegové si na něj po jeho smrti málokdy vzpomenou. I tak může znít shrnutí děje románu Stoner, románu o všedním životě nikterak úspěšného titulního hrdiny. A přesto je tento průzračný a hluboce dojemný román Johna Williamse dílem nenápadné dokonalosti. Je to příběh konfliktů, porážek a vítězství, které netvoří velkou historii a nejsou nikde zaznamenány, příběh vyzdvihující význam jednotlivého života. Jeho hrdina neaspiruje na nesmrtelnost, ale vzbuzuje úctu svou smířlivostí a oddaností vlastním ideálům. Příběh muže, který zasvětil život literatuře, se díky autorově mistrovství stává sám o sobě poctivým literárním počinem, jehož prostá síla přináší hluboký čtenářský zážitek. O autorovi John Williams (1922-1994) se narodil v Clarksvillu v Texasu. V letech 1942 – 45 sloužil u amerického letectva v Číně, Barmě a Indii. V roce 1948 mu vyšel v nakladatelství Swallow Press první román Nothing But the Night (Pouze a jen noc) a o rok později kniha veršů The Broken Landscape (Rozbitá krajina). Druhý Williamsův román Butcher’s Crossing vydalo v roce 1960 nakladatelství MacMillan. Poté, co Williams získal na Denverské univerzitě bakalářský a magisterský titul a na Missourské univerzitě doktorát, vrátil se v roce 1954 na Denverskou univerzitu, kde následujících třicet let vyučoval literaturu a tvůrčí psaní. V roce 1964 dostal nabídku pracovat jako odborný asistent na univerzitě v Oxfordu, přičemž mu Rockefellerův grant umožnil cestovat do Itálie, aby tam podnikl výzkum pro svůj poslední román Augustus, který vyšel v roce 1972. eBook:,Román Mág (The Magus, 1965) je nejrozsáhlejší prozaické dílo Johna Fowlese. V roce 1977 se román dočkal přepracovaného vydání s autorskou předmluvou. Mág se patrně nejvýrazněji ze všech Fowlesových literárních textů vzpírá jednoznačnému žánrovému zařazení a interpretaci – v předmluvě k přepracovanému vydání autor sice prozradil původně zamýšlený titul knihy, The Godgame, Božská hra, čímž částečně naznačil určité interpretační možnosti, přiznal se k některým literárním i neliterárním inspiracím, zároveň ale přirovnal román k psychologickému testu bez jediného „správného“ řešení. Příběh mladého středostavovského absolventa literárních studií na Oxfordské univerzitě Nicholase Urfa začíná a končí v Londýně, jeho převážná část se však odehrává na relativně izolovaném řeckém ostrově Fraxos (řecky „Oplocený ostrov“), kam Nicholas přijíždí vyučovat angličtinu na chlapecké internátní škole. Osamělý a stereotypní život Nicholase přivede k setkání s řeckým boháčem Mauricem Conchisem, obývajícím vilu na jednom z mysů ostrova. Conchis postupně Nicholase zapojuje do mnoha peripetií jakéhosi experimentálního dramatu, zároveň uhrančivého i nelítostného, v němž se stírají hranice mezi realitou a fantazií a řád vymezený běžnými pravidly lidského chování přestává platit. Dutchman’s Creek je prudký a zrádný, má strmé břehy, a za příslib hojného úlovku v něm už údajně nejeden sportovní rybář zaplatil cenu nejvyšší. A pak kolují mezi místními ještě jiné příběhy – tak fantastické, že snad ani nemohou být pravdivé.
