Nemoci srdce a cév představují dlouhodobě nejčastější příčinu úmrtí v ekonomicky vyspělých zemích, tedy i v České republice. Kardiovaskulární nemoci jsou trvale vedoucí příčinou morbidity i mortality ve většině zemí dnešního světa. Mezi nimi pak právě nemoci koronární cirkulace – tedy především ICHS – stojí na prvním místě. Avšak právě v oblasti terapie ICHS došlo v posledních 25 letech k zásadnímu průlomu, který zcela změnil osud nemalého procenta pacientů – možnost rychlého zprůchodnění infarktované koronární cévy, pokročilá farmakoterapie a v neposlední řadě sofistikované diagnostické metody. Přirozeným vedlejším efektem je rostoucí rozpor mezi terapeutickými možnostmi a reálnými znalostmi rutinních kardiologů a internistů.
