Když se na Zeměploše narodí osmému synovi osmé dítě a je to také syn, dostává podle tradice do vínku kouzelnickou hůl a stane se z něho mág. Dcer se tento nepsaný zákon netýká, protože s ženami zeměplošská magie vůbec nepočítá. Stařičký kouzelník Podomní Kšaft si až příliš pozdě uvědomil, co způsobil, když svou hůl předal právě narozenému osmému potomku osmého syna, aniž se přesvědčil, zda je to kluk... Smrť je nezvěstný. Předpokládá se, že jaksi ... odešel. Pravdou však je, že dostal výpověď. To samozřejmě působí určitý zmatek, jaký ostatně vznikne pokaždé, když zrušíte nějakou hodně využívanou službu veřejnosti. Zeměplochu pomalu naplňují nejrůznější duchové, a skupina bojovníků za práva mrtvých má najednou víc práce než kdykoliv předtím. Zatím se kdesi daleko na venkově objeví podivný, velmi skromný cizinec, který, jak se ukáže, umí skvěle zacházet s kosou. Jeho obrovský bílý kůň se skvostným postrojem sice vypadá jako kradený, ale začínají žně a každé ruky je zapotřebí. Cizinec nastoupí jako výtaný pomocník na farmě slečny Zahořalé a pustí se do práce, i když chvílemi tak nějak po svém... (knihydobrovsky.cz)

Anhk-morporkská Opera ... obrovská budova, v jejíchž prostorách se pohybují maskované postavy a provozují své nekalé rejdy ... kde umírání na jevišti občas bývá víc než metafora ... kde jsou nevinné mladé sopranistky lákány do osudových tenat padouchy v děsivě odporných večerních robách. Kde narazíte na dvě stará dámy ve špičatých kloboucích, které zatímco v lóži pojídají burské oříšky, upírají pohledy na obrovský křišťálový lustr nad hledištěm a tiše si pobrukují: "No, jestli se teď každou chvíli nestane velký neštěstí, tak teda nevím." Ano, Bábi Zlopočasná a Stařenka Oggová, největší čarodějky Zeměplochy, se vypravily užít si jeden nevinný (ale co je u Bábi Zlopočasné tak docela nevinné?) večer v Opeře. A nejen to. Tentokrát vtrhla síla pokroku do největšího města Zeměplochy v podobě velkolepého objevu tisku. Skromný pisálek Mikuláš ze Slova se díky náhodě stává prvním editorem novin Ankh-Morporská Kometa a snad není ani nutné dodávat, že nic nepůjde hladce. Ne každý je totiž nadšen tímto pokrokem a ti, kdo se mluvit nepřejí, rychle objevují umění "No Comment!". Velkou komplikací je i obvinění lorda Vetinariho z vraždy svého asistenta a následný pokus o útěk. Když se pak do záležitostí plete investigativní žurnalista (s "notebookem" v ruce), je nasnadě, že může být odkryto mnohem závažnější spiknutí... Rád by vyvolal démona a přinutil ho, aby mu splnil tři přání: stát se vládcem světa, získat lásku nejkrásnější ženy Zeměplochy, být nesmrtelným - prostě takové ty obvyklé věci. Co se to v Hrabství stalo před lety? Co o tom ví místní kovář Zafrkoň? A kam se najednou poděl? Zabil ho Elánius, jak by ráda dokázala místní smetánka, hlavně mladý lord Gravid Rzezacz? Má s tím něco společného bývalý policista Jeminák, zdejší hospodský? A co místní skřeti a jejich schránky unggue? Pašuje se v Hrabství opravdu jen tabák? Spojují se i ti nejchudší, protože nemají co ztratit - jen své vodní buvoly. Náčelníci bojují o moc. Válka (s Řinčilou) prochází ulicemi prastarých měst. A co stojí v cestě strašlivé zkáze, která by zničila všechny bez rozdílu? Mágská rada potřebuje někoho, kdo by se vypravil jako posel na Vyvažovací kontinent, který se zmítá v boji čtyř rodin o moc. Mágská rada se nakonec rozhodne, že za pomoci magického obřadu najde a povolá zpět ztraceného Mrakoplaše, protože jak říká arcikancléř Vzoromil Výsměšek: "Jestliže přežil všechno to, co tvrdíte, že přežil, přežije i to, co tvrdíte, že nepřežije." Povídky sebrané v Mrknutí obrazovky sestávají z vpádů sekundárních světů do toho našeho. Spisovatel fantasy nechá zemřít svého barbarského hrdinu a najde ho na zápraží, protože se přece ‚sešel se svým stvořitelem‘. Smrt tancuje na diskotéce. První povídku, Kšeft v Hádu, Pratchett napsal, když mu bylo třináct. Vypráví o vpádu ďábla do inzerentova bytu. Odsýpá ale pěkně a má uspokojivě dobrý konec. Všechny jeho povídky mají uspokojivé konce. Obzvláště ta založená na opravdové události z roku 1973, kdy se poblíž Hollywoodu převrátila dodávka plná slepic, a ty se usadily v keři osázeném travnatém pásu uprostřed dálnice. Také mám ráda tu podivnou o zoufalých cestovatelích uvízlých ve světě tvořeným viktoriánskými vánočními pohlednicemi, obklopených sněhovými vločkami z pozlátka, obludnými červenkami a ‚strašidelným obdélníkovým otvorem‘. Pak tu najdete povídky o počítačích, třeba jednu z roku 1990, vyprávěnou přívětivým opravářem, nepříliš chytrým, ale dobrým s mašinami, pomocí kterých si lidé vytvářejí svoji vlastní realitu. Magráta s Verencem mají dceru a připravují velkou oslavu k jejímu křtu. Na oslavu jsou pochopitelně pozvány i čarodějky - Bábi, Stařenka a Anežka Nulíčková. Bábino pozvání ukradnou straky a Bábi, která se cítí tímto domnělým přehlédnutím uražena, se rozhodne opustit Lancre, protože dojde k názoru, že už ji ostatní čarodějky nepotřebují. Na obřad dorazí poslední hosté, rodina upírů z Überwaldu. Chtějí získat Lancre, chtějí, aby se jeho obyvatelé stali jejich služebníky... a potravou. Představte si klikatou říčku, která je hranicí mezi Borogravií a Plesnivinske a po každých deštích radikálně změní koryto. Schyluje se k válce. Na území, které po posledních deštích připadlo Borogravii, stále totiž jedna z ankh-morporkských signálních věží. Vládkyně Borogravie dala věž zbourat. Patricij vyslal na ochranu malého Plesnivinska a samozřejmě tak trochu i ank-morporkských zájmů, oddíl vojska, jemuž velí Řezník Elánius (jak mu říkají Borogravijci). Na ochranu rodné Borogravie se dá naverbovat i Apoléna, ať už k tomu má důvody jakékoliv. Ztracena mezi vojáky lidmi, vojáky trolly a vojákem Igorem, prodělává na pochodu k hlavním jednotkám tvrdý výcvik pod velením svobodníka Řemendera a desátníka Honzáruma. Pátý elefant! Mýtické zvíře. Podle trpasličí legendy kdysi v pradávných dobách spadl v oblasti Überwaldu. Proto se tam dnes vyskytuje obrovské tukové a jiné podzemní bohatství. A především tuk je nedostatkový artikl dokonce i v Ankh-Morporku. Überwaldští trpaslíci a s nimi trpaslíci většiny Zeměplochy mají volit dolního krále. ze dvou kandidátů: konzervativního a pokrokového. Podle toho, který to bude, se bude chovat k lidem i celé trpaslictvo. volbu (a pak samozřejmě obchodní politiku) může ovlivnit nově jmenovaný Ankh-Morporský velvyslanec v Bjonku, jeho excelence, vévoda Ankhský, sir Samel elánius, za vydatné pomoci své ženy. Jedna z politických frakcí však chce udržet Überwald a snaží se v tom siru Elániovi zabránit. Stojí tedy proti němu trpaslíci - zpátečníci, Anguini příbuzní - vlkodlaci a místní upíři. Angua mizí. Karotka najme jako stopaře a tlumočníka Gaspodu (biftek ke každé večeři) a vydá se po jejich stopách. Ankh-Morporská hlídka pod vedením serž-pardon, kapitána Tračníka se rozpadá! Do Ankh-Morporku přijíždí nový vynález - obrovské kovově dunící monstrum, které ovládlo sílu všech čtyř základních živlů: země, vzduchu, ohně i vody. Nad Zeměplochu začne stoupat pára vytvořená lokomotivou pana Štědrovky, muže v čepici se štítkem, vyzbrojeného posuvným pravítkem. Pan Štědrovka má zajímavou dohodu se siny a cosiny a díky nim ovládá Železnou vrtilku - první zeměplošskou lokomotivu. Vlahoš von Rosret nepatří k lidem, kteří by milovali tvrdou práci. Ve funkcích šéfa Poštovního úřadu, Mincovny a Královské ankh-morporské banky je ovšem jeho pracovní nasazení životně důležité; spočívá však především ve slovech, která naštěstí nejsou těžká a nepotřebují každou chvíli naolejovat. Vlahoš je milovník života a proto nedokáže odmítnout novou práci, kterou mu nabídne Patricij. Vlahoš se bude muset vypořádat s celými litry kolomazi, se skřety, s tlustým podnikatelem, o němž se říká, že shazuje zaměstnance ze schodů, s řadou rozzuřených ortodoxních trpaslíků - vrtmářů a mnoha dalšími protivenstvími, pokud nechce, aby všechno vykolejilo... Na Zeměploše, která je placatá a putuje vesmírem na zádech obrovské želvy, se najedou dějí nepředstavitelné věci, neboť do královské politiky se zamíchaly tři místopřísežné čarodějky - Bábi Zlopočasná (ta za Čaroprávnost) a její dvě kolegyně z magického sdružení.
