Vlna solidarity na obranu převratné knihy vzápětí prokázala, že další policejní perzekuce je neudržitelná, a tak se i v autorově vlasti objevila v desítkách vydání a v řadě filmových adaptací. Čeští čtenáři ji přesto mohli číst už roku 1930 v převodu Staši Jílovské. Nynější třetí česká verze navazuje na virtuózní moderní překlad, který v roce 1987 pořídil František Vrba.

Kniha Davida Herberta Lawrence z roku 1928 způsobila okamžitě po svém vydání skandál. Ve spisovatelově rodné Velké Británii nesměla být vydávána dokonce až do 60. let, neboť příběh mileneckého vztahu mezi urozenou Constance a mužem z nižší společenské třídy byl pokládán za obscénní, až pornografický. V češtině byla kniha vydána už v roce 1930, a tak mohli čeští čtenáři brzy zjistit, že se jedná o mimořádně působivý erotický příběh s nespornou uměleckou hodnotou. Vypráví o osamělosti, pokrytectví, pomalu se probouzející vášni a také touze po mateřství. Sexuální naplnění, které zažívá vdaná lady Chatterlyová s hajným svého muže Oliverem Mellorsem, je především úlevným únikem z mezilidských vztahů sešněrovaných konvencí.

V proslulém soudním procesu, v němž na obranu Lawrencova románu vystoupila řada věhlasných spisovatelů a literárních vědců, byl román shledán nevinným a zbaven nařčení z pornografie. Je pravda, že autor líčí erotické scény s velkou otevřeností. Nejsou však samoúčelné. Jde o společenský román o lidských vztazích na přelomu dvou epoch, s důrazem na hluboký a pravdivý erotický vztah mezi mužem a ženou, který má vliv na emancipaci člověka a společnosti. Toto dílo v konečném důsledku autora nejvíce proslavilo a stalo se námětem řady filmů a TV inscenací (1955 – film Francie, 1981 koprodukční film Velká Británie, Francie, Německo, 1998 dvoudílný film ČT v režii Viktora Polesného, 2006 koprodukční film Belgie, Francie, 2015 britský TV film). Vydavatelství AudioStory v roce 2021 slaví 30 let existence a jako druhý titul ke svým kulatinám natočilo tento společenský román D.H. Lawrence v původním překladu Františka Vrby.

Protože Milenec lady Chatterleyové je možná erotický román, určitě však ne obscénní. Byť hranice mezi těmito výrazy vždy byla a bude hodně pohyblivá. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) se úspěchu své knihy nedočkal, zemřel pouhý rok po jejím prvním vydání. A vlastně by musel čekat dlouhá desetiletí, než se kniha stala součástí literárního kánonu a vysokoškolských skript, než se stala jednou z vůbec nejfilmovanějších knih, a hlavně knih nejčtenějších. Milostný příběh mladé aristokratky Constance, která si místo svého urozeného (a želbohu invalidního) manžela zvolí 'obyčejného hajného' dnes už žádný skandál nevyvolá; stále nás však muže oslovit a dojmout - a vzrušit - nejen mimořádnými literárními kvalitami, ale především silou vášně obou milenců i samotného autora.
