S buldočí zaslepeností si předsevzal sloužit svému pánovi do roztrhání těla, až tím neméně svědomitě promarnil i vlastní vyhlídky. Největší potíž je však v tom, že tento toporný lokaj není tak docela "mužem bez vlastností". V románové tvorbě britského nobelisty Kazua Ishigura představují Neutěšenci (The Unconsoled, 1995) význačný předěl. Po světově úspěšném Soumraku dne (The Remains of the Day, 1989, č. 1997), jemuž předcházela dvě raná díla s japonskou tematikou, Vybledlá vyhlídka s kopci (A Pale View of Hills, 1982, č. 2018) a Malíř pomíjivého světa (An Artist of the Floating World, 1986, č. 1999), se autor rozhodl opustit tvůrčí jistoty, jimiž si vydobyl přední postavení na britské literární scéně: ať už jde o postkoloniální tematiku, „tichý“, ale vycizelovaný jazykový styl, realistický způsob vyprávění ve dvou prolínajících se časových rovinách či celkově melancholické ladění próz. Nově se pustil do odvážného experimentu: jeho výsledkem je osobitá románová tragikomedie, která si v mnohém nezadá s absurdní komikou Kafkova Zámku či Beckettova Čekání na Godota, případně se satirickým řízem próz Thomase Bernharda. Pohřbený obr je brilantní dílo z pera jednoho z největších žijících britských prozaiků. Děj románu na pomezí fantasy zasadil autor do počátků raného středověku, kdy se Británie, kterou dávno opustili Římané, nezadržitelně mění v trosky. Král Artuš jistě vykonal pro smír na ostrově své, ale i on už se odebral do propadliště dějin a neklidnou zemí bloumají různá individua včetně těch nadpřirozených. Druhý román Kazua Ishigura Malíř pomíjivého světa nás přivádí do Japonska po konci druhé světové války, kdy mnozí z těch, kteří zemi přivedli do zkázy, čelí historické změně a svému svědomí. Jedním z nich je i vypravěč, malíř Ono, věhlasný umělec, který své umění odevzdal do služeb válečného režimu. Ono nespáchá sebevraždu, jak to učinili mnozí jiní; namísto toho se pokouší ve své paměti zrekonstruovat svou životní cestu. Poté, co mu ve válce zemřela manželka a syn, mu totiž zbývá poslední úkol – provdat dceru, což se v poválečném Japonsku stále ještě neobejde bez důkladného prověřování rodinné historie. Jeho pohled do minulosti se ovšem vyznačuje zvláštní strategií, v níž se slučuje upřímné hledání pravdy a prozření se záměrnou manipulací, vytěsňováním, přetrvávajícím sebeklamem a melancholií. Ishiguro nám skrze svého nespolehlivého vypravěče pronikavě předvádí, jakými cestami se ubírá naše paměť a jak se ji snažíme prezentovat svému okolí, abychom si o sobě vytvořili „dobrý příběh“. Už v prvotině Vybledlá krajina s kopci otevírá držitel Nobelovy ceny za rok 2017 Kazuo Ishiguro téma, v němž se posléze stal mistrem tiché hrůzy naaranžované do úhledné ikebany. Noblesně, nevtíravě, a přece nesmlouvavě porovnává „zastydlé projevy velké sfingy“ – jak problém svého času pojmenoval kolega John Fowles – a zjišťuje, že zdánlivě prospěšná, ba důstojná uměřenost je typické japonské a britské povaze na škodu, protože ve skutečnosti strojeného člověka i jeho okolí drtí. Na sklonku druhé světové války se tu ale duše jejích spoluobčanů změnily k nepoznání. Nic už není jako za předválečného militantního režimu, po ulicích se plouží mátohy někdejších známých a jen málokdo v sobě najde sílu posunout se dál. Úslužná Ecuko si v krajině blednoucích vzpomínek vybavuje zejména měsíce před porodem prvního dítěte, kdy byla nucena přitakávat jediným žijícím příbuzným: panovačnému prvnímu choti a jeho stejně manipulátorskému otci. Zdá se, že poddajnou ženušku tehdy mohla posílit známost s nevyzpytatelnou sousedkou Sačiko a její neposlušnou dcerkou, které chtějí z města vypálených stínů za každou cenu pryč. Stupňující se neslyšný protest a všudypřítomné nagasacké trauma však dovedou drama těhotné Ecuko až k vyvrcholení, jehož kafkovské rysy umocní autorova oblíbená ich-forma. Ostatně právě díky tomuto Ishigurovu triku jsme názorně poznali, že si lidská paměť účelově vybírá a s léty klame, jak ukázaly znamenité romány Soumrak dne a Malíř pomíjivého světa. This monograph documents Haig Utidjian’s research of recent years on the formation of the extant melodies of the Armenian Hymnal on the basis of the corpus of writings and transcriptions of the nineteenth-century Constantinopolitan musician and musicologist Ełia Tntesean (1834–1881). It serves to position the study of the nineteenth-century transcriptions of the melodies of the Armenian Hymnal on a substantially new basis, analysing particularly the manner in which the mediaeval neumatic notation was exploited in redacting the melodies that came to be recorded in the Limončean notational system. Instances are identified where Tntesean appears to have departed from his own avowed theoretical principles, choosing to afford precedence to implicit aesthetic criteria, as well as reflecting the influence of the quasi-improvisatory procedures of the time. Attention is also drawn to the valuable information that may be drawn from apparent idiosyncrasies in the deployment of the Limončean notation. This study is a major advance towards a fuller understanding of the manner in which the extant melodies of the Armenian Hymnal came to be constituted, and is set to stimulate a new wave of research on the music of the Armenian Hymnal and the notational systems that were employed to record it. It is enhanced by comparisons with other versions of the Hymnal from the same period, the investigation of parallels with the neighbouring practice of Ottoman makams, as well as fieldwork involving the surviving remnants of the oral tradition. Metodologickým vodítkem studie je dílo Irwina Yaloma „Existenciální psychoterapie“ a stejně jako tento významný americký psychiatr i autorka předkládá čtenáři čtyři velká témata lidského života, totiž smrt, svoboda, existenciální izolaci a nepřítomnost smyslu. Nahlíží tato témata očima romské komunity, jejími zvyky a hodnotovým systémem, který autorka důvěrně zná. Tím odkrývá zcela nový pohled na Romy jako na svébytný národ s vlastním duchovním a duševním životem, který však je uzavřen nejen pro běžnou majoritní společnost, ale i pro ty, kteří to s Romy tak zvaně myslí dobře. Autorka dochází k závěru, že hlavní problém soužití s Romy netkví v sociální rovině, ale jedná se především o problém národnostní a národní emancipace Romů. In an entirely compact way, the authoress analyses the escalated problem of cohabitation of Romani/Gypsies with the majority society - which is still topical in many countries, especially in European countries - from the historical, legal, sociological and psychological viewpoint. A methodological guide for this study is Irvin Yalom's work titled "Existential Psychotherapy" and the authoress, like this outstanding American psychiatrist, presents four big themes of the human life to her readers, namely death, freedom, existential isolation and a lack of meaning. She views these issues with the eyes of the Romani/Gypsies, its customs and value system, which the authoress knows very intimately. Thus, she discloses a completely new view of the Romani people as an independent nation with its own spiritual and intellectual life which, however, is inaccessible not only to the common majority society but also to those who say they "mean it well" with the Romani people. The authoress comes to a conclusion that the main problem of cohabitation with the Romani does not consist in the social level, but it is, above all, a national problem and an issue of national emancipation of the Romani people. The authoress then criticizes the view of the Romani/Gypsies as a social group as a non-functional and simplified view of the state representatives.
