Czech Photography of the 20th Century, published simultaneously in Czech and English versions, is the first book to present the main trends, figures, and works of Czech photography from the beginning to the end of the last century to such a large extent. Its 517 plates include not only the most important, well-known photographs and photomontages, but also works that have long been forgotten or are published for the first time. The book is arranged in seventeen chapters, supplemented with chronologies of the most important events in twentieth-century Czech photography and history. Monografie významného českého fotografa z pera profesora Vladimíra Birguse, který připravil již jeho knihu Hořká léta. Evropa 1945-1947 (1995). Jindřich Marco byl v roce 1950 zatčen a vězněn do roku 1957. Později byl plně rehabilitován, neměl ovšem štěstí na odpovídající péči nakladatelů. Kniha záběrů ze srpna 1968 Genosse Aggressor vyšla napřed pod pseudonymem v cizině (1968), její domácí realizaci (1990) hrubě polygraficky poškodilo její nakladatelství. Album Izrael 48 čekalo na zveřejnění 43 let. Přítomná kniha přináší první důkladný průřez celoživotním Marcovým fotografickým dílem, odpovídající jeho významu v dějinách české fotografie. Vladimír Birgus (b. 1954) has long been important on the?Czech and European photography scene, where he plays several roles, ranging from photographer and columnist to historian and teacher. A number of high-profile projects are connected with his name, in particular the comprehensive exhibitions and books Czech Photographic Avant-garde, 1918-1948 and Czech Photography of the 20th Century, which have, in a fundamental way, helped promote the works of a many Czech photographers internationally. He has also helped to gain appreciation for the works of František Drtikol, Jaroslav Rössler, and Eugen Wiškovský. As a photographer, he has gained an international reputation, and has shown his works in dozens of exhibitions at home and abroad, and his photographs are in a number of important collections. Since the late 1970s, he has systematically expanded his series of photographs called Something Unspeakable, in which he organically links elements of socially concerned documentary photography with a subjective view. His photographs are enriched with many visual metaphors and symbols, whose psychological and emotional meanings are underscored by the symbolic use of colour photography. Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) patří k nejvýznamnějším osobnostem české i světové fotografické avantgardy. Jeho díla jsou zastoupena v zásadních uměleckých institucích od Muzea J. Paula Gettyho v Los Angeles přes Muzeum moderního umění v New Yorku a Pompidouovo centrum v Paříži až po Muzeum fotografického umění v Tokiu. V poslední době nechybí v žádných seriózních dějinách fotografie nebo encyklopediích fotografů. Trvalo však dlouho, než bylo jeho důležité místo v meziválečné fotografické tvorbě plně uznáno nejenom v českém, ale i v mezinárodním kontextu. Publikace Jaromír Funke - avantgardní fotograf - nezahrnuje příklady ze všech částí jeho tvorby, ale zaměřuje se výhradně na avantgardní díla osobitě a mnohdy velmi progresivně rozvíjející podněty kubismu, abstrakce, nové věcnosti, konstruktivismu a surrealismu. eBook: Over the past thirty years, the Czech public administration has been the subject of research rooted in law, economics, and history. However, only minimal attention has been paid to what Czech public officials actually do on the job (policy work) and the extent of politically motivated interference in their work (politicisation). This book aims to fill this gap by presenting the evidence derived from a large-N survey of the Czech ministries, the first of its kind in the country. The findings presented in the book offer new insights into the activities within the “ivory towers” of the Czech ministries and defy popular notions of an appallingly politicised bureaucracy. Vladimír Birgus (*1954) patří už dlouho k významným osobnostem české i evropské fotografie. V této oblasti zastává hned několik náročných rolí. Od fotografa a publicisty až po historika fotografie a pedagoga. S jeho jménem je spjata řada reprezentativních projektů, především souhrnné expozice a knihy Moderní krása - Česká fotografická avantgarda 1918-1948 a Česká fotografie 20.?století, které zásadním způsobem pomohly prosadit dílo řady českých fotografů v zahraničním kontextu. V minulosti zhodnotil také tvorbu Františka Drtikola, Jaroslava Rösslera či Eugena Wiškovského. Jako fotograf dosáhl mezinárodního renomé, má za sebou desítky domácích i zahraničních vystoupení a jeho tvorba je zastoupena v řadě významných sbírek. Od konce sedmdesátých let systematicky rozšiřuje cyklus fotografií Cosi nevyslovitelného, ve kterém organicky propojuje prvky sociologického dokumentu se subjektivním pohledem. Své fotografie navíc obohacuje o řadu vizuálních metafor a znaků, jejichž psychologický a emotivní význam podtrhuje symbolicky použitou barevností fotografie. Rozsáhlý cyklus fotografií Michała Szalasta o albínech z tanzanského ostrova Ukerewe na Viktoriině jezeře značně koriguje naše obvyklé představy o tragickém životě lidí, kteří jsou kvůli odlišné barvě kůže svými černými spoluobčany nenáviděni, ostrakizování a někdy i zabíjeni. Není výsledkem letmé návštěvy evropského fotoreportéra v exotickém africkém prostředí, ale vznikl díky tomu, že se Michału Szalastovi podařilo během delšího pobytu v Tanzanii s mnohými albíny navázat bližší kontakty a získat si jejich důvěru. Mohl je proto fotografovat v jejich domovech, při práci, při dětských hrách i při návštěvách u lékaře. Vytvořil v něm nepřikrášlený, nelyrizovaný a nesentimentální obraz života na vesnicích v chudé oblasti Bruntálska v období komunistické normalizace. Přitom i v tom nejzdevastovanějším prostředí dokázal často objevit něco krásného či aspoň touhu po kráse a po radosti, přátelství a lásce, po nadčasových hodnotách. Zdálo se, že Štreitovy fotografie ze Sovince a jeho okolí ze sedmdesátých a osmdesátých let byly tolikrát publikovány, že už mezi tisíci negativů nelze najít žádné další výjimečné fotografie. Tato kniha však dokazuje, že tomu tak není a že v archivu Jindřicha Štreita bylo možno objevit mnoho dosud nepublikovaných děl z tohoto období, která mohou obstát vedle těch, z nichž už se staly fotografické ikony. Monografie významného českého fotografa z pera profesora Vladimíra Birguse, který připravil již jeho knihu Hořká léta. Evropa 1945-1947 (1995). Jindřich Marco byl v roce 1950 zatčen a vězněn do roku 1957. Později byl plně rehabilitován, neměl ovšem štěstí na odpovídající péči nakladatelů. Kniha záběrů ze srpna 1968 Genosse Aggressor vyšla napřed pod pseudonymem v cizině (1968), její domácí realizaci (1990) hrubě polygraficky poškodilo její nakladatelství. Album Izrael 48 čekalo na zveřejnění 43 let. Přítomná kniha přináší první důkladný průřez celoživotním Marcovým fotografickým dílem, odpovídající jeho významu v dějinách české fotografie. (patro.cz)

Flowers have been a popular motif in art for centuries. As the epitome of natural beauty and earthly mortality since the Baroque era, flowers have lost none of their fascination for artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. The first presentation in book form of Josef Lada (1887-1957) as a major exponent of Central European art of the 20th century, and consequently also a master of world painting. This full-colour pictorial monograph is conceived around the premise that his perennial attachment to quintessentially Czech motifs, the Bohemian landscape, as well as Czech traditions and myths, was essential in enhancing the individuality of his output. In an introductory essay followed by ten thematically focused illustrated chapters, the author of this book documents both Josef Lada´s affinity with many leading figures of world culture (including not only artists), and the uniqueness and exceptionality of Lada´s painterly idiom. The artist´s greatness is seen as stemming primarily from his intrinsically defined creative method which accounts for the overall spirit of harmony emanating from his works and assigning him the status of an artist of worldwide import. Hence for instance the juxtaposition, in the final section of the book, of the phenomenon of "Ladian winter" alongside some of the most illustrious individual motivic characteristics found in the history of world art - a company to which Lada´s paintings prove fully equal. Ylla (1911–1955) devoted herself exclusively to animal portraiture at a time when nobody had thought of only photographing animals. She created something new – the genre of expression and personality in animals. This is the story of a “New Woman” par excellence, Ylla was fearless and knew no limits, and of a pioneer animal photographer in Africa and India.
